With no major UFC event this weekend, the majority of news in MMA is fully focused on UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, and a big part of that is his highly-publicized feud with a bevy of WWE wrestlers after he recently called them ‘p——‘ and threatened to slap them.

The threat was met with a harsh backlash by a number of high-profile WWE stars from Ric Flair to Roman Reigns to Sasha Banks, and another media windfall was stirred up by the controversial master of self-promotion.

McGregor only took that a step further by blasting perennial WWE frontrunner John Cena in yesterday’s UFC 202 media day to promote his upcoming rematch with Nate Diaz at next weekend’s (August 20, 2016) UFC 202 from Las Vegas, and one prominent former WWE champ is not impressed with the words of ‘Notorious.’

Olympic gold medalist wrestler and pro-wrestling star Kurt Angle met up with Sports Illustrated to break down the situation, noting that McGregor doesn’t know what it takes to be a full-time pro-wrestler, and so should therefore keep his mouth shut about the subject:

“Conor is either the most loved or the most hated fighter in UFC, and that’s a credit to him,” said Angle. “But to cross over into another career, into pro wrestling–something you don’t even know–and call WWE wrestlers “p——”? That’s offensive. Don’t talk about someone you don’t know.”

As for how he feels he’d do in a match-up with McGregor, Angle feels it’d be no contest, as his size advantage would lead him to an easy win:

“I’d take him down, then ground and pound him until I knocked him out,” said Angle. “Conor is a polished fighter, but with my size, I would overpower him. It wouldn’t be that difficult for me.

“Coming out of the Olympics, with the way I was training, McGregor wouldn’t have had a chance in hell,” said Angle. “I was also 230 pounds, so that’s not really fair. But pound for pound, he might be the best fighter today.”

With that extremely unlikely to ever happen, however, Angle issued a challenge of a different kind to McGregor, tasking him with taking five pro-wrestling ‘bumps’ in the squared circle:

“I’d like to challenge Conor,” said Angle. “Take five bumps with me in the ring. Just five bumps. When I did that for the first time, I took three and said, ‘F— this, I’m quitting.’ I quit for a couple days and my manager talked me into going back. I know how Dana White and Conor continue to bash the business, but I challenge either of them to get in the ring with me and take five bumps. Once they do, they’ll realize how tough it is–and that’s not even a fraction of what it takes to be a pro wrestler.”

Angle also compared MMA and pro-wrestling, noting that the WWE supposedly focuses on safety more than the UFC does. He knows it’s extremely tough to be a top-flight MMA fighter, but said it’s equally tough to be a pro-wrestler, just in a different way:

“We do rely on safety, unlike UFC fighters,” said Angle. “The pure fact is there is nothing I’ve ever done that is tougher than pro wrestling. It doesn’t make you tough from a fighting standpoint, but it does make you tough from what you have to do every day and how you have to sacrifice. They’re both very tough to do, but they’re tough in different ways.”

With McGregor blasting Cena heavily, Angle said that while he admits the longtime WWE superstar and multi-time world champ might tap out quickly in the Octagon, what he’s accomplished over the past fourteen years is simply amazing and without equal:

“John Cena would tap in twenty seconds in the Octagon, but he is still the biggest badass to ever walk the face of the earth,” said Angle. “This kid has been on top for thirteen years. No one has ever done that. He’s now in his fourteenth year on top.

“I couldn’t do it. Hulk Hogan didn’t do that, Stone Cold had four or five years tops, and it was the same with The Rock before he went to Hollywood. From a toughness standpoint, there is nobody tougher than John Cena. I would love to see Conor McGregor try to be on top of WWE for thirteen years. He wouldn’t make it.”

UFC featherweight Conor McGregor may have another fight to worry about instead of his UFC 202 contest against Nate Diaz, and it’s with the entire World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) locker room.

In a recent media conference call for UFC 202, McGregor was asked if he would ever consider a career in the industry of professional wrestling, and had this to say:

“For the most part, those WWE guys are p*ssies, to be honest,” McGregor said. “They’re messed up p*ssies, if you ask me. Fair play to Brock [Lesnar], he got in and fought, but at the end of the day he was juiced up to the f*cking eye balls, so how can I respect that? And then what’s the other guy? The other guy hasn’t fought yet, so I don’t know about him yet.”

“There’s some dons in that wrestling game,” McGregor said. “The McMahons, they’re dons. Triple H is a don. The Rock is a don. But the rest of them are p*ssies.”

“I haven’t really thought of that to be honest,” he said. “Again, that’s a little more show business. This is the fight business.”

McGregor would take a lot of heat from WWE fans following his comments, and took to Twitter to apologize in his own special way:

Current and former WWE stars wasted no time to respond to the 145-pound champion on Twitter, you can read their reactions here:

McGregor will take on Diaz in the main event of UFC 202 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 20, 2016.

Kurt Angle Eyes MMA Fight, Names Kimbo Slice, Ken Shamrock as Possible Opponents

Kurt Angle has said he is tempted by a move into MMA, naming former UFC fighter Kimbo Slice as a potential opponent for his first bout.

The wrestling icon recently told The Roman Show (h/t TMZ Sports) there is a “very small chance” he will step into the cage to face an opponent in a marquee fight, namedropping Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie:

Of course, I’m not going to fight a guy in their prime. It’s obviously gonna be one of the older guys. But if it does come to fruition, it’ll be a helluva fight, whether its Kimbo Slice, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn … or even Royce Gracie.

If I do decide [to fight], it’ll be with a Hall of Famer … it won’t be someone in their prime in their early 30s, no way, not now.

Gracie is one of the most influential figures in UFC and MMA history, and he is currently part of the Bellator promotion, which Angle commentates for. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner is now 49 years old, but he would be an immense hurdle for Angle in a potential bout.

Slice comes from a boxing background, and he would offer a stylistic challenge for the former WWE champion.

Shamrock also has roots in sports entertainment, as a former NWA world champion and WWE Intercontinental belt holder, and he would generate incredible interest if he were to fight Angle in MMA.

Actor and director David Henrie recently reminded everyone why Angle was destined for stardom after winning gold at the 1996 Summer Olympics:

Angle has always been a competitive individual, but the step up to MMA seems unlikely after the myriad injuries he has suffered.

Now 47, Angle’s health could be seriously at risk if he signed up for a bout in the future, but any contest would generate huge interest due to his past achievements.

Slice is a relative unknown compared to Shamrock or Gracie, but he has a knockout capability. He would be a dangerous opponent for Angle, but he would offer the American the best chance of a clear victory.

While Kurt Angle admits that the chances of him entering MMA and fighting top opposition in their prime are slim-to-none, the former Olympic gold medalist is talking like a fight against an MMA legend is still a possibility.

Angle appeared on “The Roman Show” recently and claimed that at age 47 he won’t be fighting a fighter that is in his prime, he is interested in having a pro MMA match against a Hall Of Famer.

“Of course, I’m not going to fight a guy in their prime,” Angle said. “It’s obviously gonna be one of the older guys. But if it does come to fruition, it’ll be a helluva fight, whether its Kimbo Slice, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn … or even Royce Gracie.”

The TNA Wrestling star added, “If I do decide [to fight], it’ll be with a Hall of Famer … it won’t be someone in their prime in their early 30s, no way, not now.”

Angle is currently overseas in the UK with TNA Wrestling and will be finishing up with the company after a 10-year run. His final opponent in TNA will be pro wrestler / MMA fighter Bobby Lashley.
