Fans tuning into Absolute Championship Akhmat 161 on Friday bore witness to perhaps the worst injury to ever occur inside the cage.

Injuries are an unfortunate part of any professional sport, but every once in a while, a truly horrific injury comes down the pipeline and reminds fans and fellow fighters just how big the risk they take truly is. We sadly received another reminder at ACA 161 when heavyweight fighter Grigoriy Ponomarev suffered perhaps the most grotesque leg break in mixed martial arts history.

Less than a minute into the bout, Ponomarev had his opponent locked up against the fence before attempting to throw his opponent, Mukhamad Vakhaev, with a belly-to-belly style suplex. Vakhaev scrambled back to his feet, but Ponomarev quickly shot back in looking for a takedown. It was then that Vakhaev threw Ponomarev off of him, causing Ponomarev to stumble and immediately snap his left leg at the knee.

Adding insult to injury, Grigoriy Ponomarev’s left ankle also broke.

Mixed Martial Artist Suffers Horrific Injury 30-Seconds Into Fight

The video clip, which you can see below, is incredibly graphic and includes a slow-motion replay. You have been warned.

Is this the worst injury you have ever seen in mixed martial arts? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Amazing Video: Russian Fighter Suffers Horrible Leg Break, Wins by Rear-Naked Choke Anyway

(Props: GrapplersPlanetCom via Reddit/MMA)

Today’s example of inhuman Russian toughness comes to us from the International Federation of Full Contact Fighting, where a fighter won a recent match by rear-naked choke directly after having his leg snapped and twisted sideways by his opponent.

Skip to the video’s 0:40 mark to see the fighter in red shorts grab an ankle and start working on a heel hook. At the 0:54 mark, you can see that the fighter in blue shorts is in a position that you might describe as “uncomfortable.” Realizing that his tough-as-nails opponent isn’t going to tap so easily, Red Fighter re-adjusts the hold and cranks the absolute bejesus out of Blue Fighter’s ankle. I think what you’re hearing at the 1:05-1:06 mark is ligaments tearing off the bone.

999,999,999 out of a billion times, this would result in the leg-lock victim screaming in agony and tapping as quickly as possible. Instead, Blue Fighter goes “full Russian” and snatches the now-exposed neck of Red Fighter. The following sequence is unbelievable. When the camera angle changes, we see how badly-off Blue Fighter’s leg is. But amazingly, he holds the choke until Red Fighter releases the leg lock and starts tapping. Blue Fighter tries to get up to celebrate his victory, and quickly realizes that, nope, he ain’t walking out of here on that thing. It’s inspirational and bizarre and a little sad all at once.

If you know Blue Fighter’s name or how much he got paid for this match, please let us know at [email protected].

Oh Great, Another MMA Fighter Snapped His Leg in Half Yesterday

(Props: Esporte Interativo via MMAFighting)

Sunday night at Favela Kombat 10 in Sao Goncalo, Brazil, a fighter named Marcos “Rino” Souza fractured his right tibia when his opponent Cristian Goetz checked his leg kick. (The announcer immediately shouts Opa!, as if his flaming cheese had just arrived.)

To quote our own Bear Siragusa, it’s not a repeat of Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman, it’s like some weird reenactment. I mean, here we have a dark-skinned Brazilian in yellow compression shorts — who was clearly trying to swagger-jack Andy in the first place — throwing a leg kick at his Caucasian counterpart, and paying the price with a floppy limb.

Sure, Silva broke his left leg, not his right one, but the visual is similar enough to make you do a double-take. All this video lacks is Goetz’s cornerman saying “Good, fuck’im.”

Watch Tyrone Spong’s Leg Break Like Anderson Silva’s at GLORY 15 [GIF/Video]

To be honest, we’re not huge kickboxing fans here at CagePotato. In fact, we used to sacrifice kickboxers to high school wrestlers and BJJ blue belts in illegal challenge matches in the basement of CagePotato HQ until Johnny Law put a stop to it.

But we’re writing about this awful injury now because Tyrone Spong is still an MMA fighter (he’s 2-0 and fights for WSOF, in case you forgot) and this so closely mirrors Anderson Silva‘s (in)famous leg break that we had no choice but to post it (either that or it’s a slow news day, pick one).

On Saturday, Spong was fighting at GLORY 15 in Istanbul in a one night tournament. He bested Saulo Cavalari in the semifinals and faced Gokhan Saki in the finals. The leg break occurred only 97 seconds into the fight, when Saki checked one of Spong’s kicks. Here’s a GIF (via Zombie Prophet) in case you can’t watch the video:

This horrific leg break will actually have implications on MMA. Spong wanted to fight again in WSOF this summer. Obviously, that can’t happen now.
