There’s been a lot of talk lately, especially in light of the heavily reported UFC sale, about fighter pay under the largest mixed martial arts banner today. The world’s premier combat sports organization has received criticism from many current and former employees over working conditions and remuneration, this includes a lawsuit against Zuffa headed b ex-fighters Nate Quarry, Jon Fitch, Cung Le and others. The ongoing effort to have the Muhammad Ali act, designed to help with stomping out corruption and potentially bringing to reality a fighter’s union, is currently being lobbied against by the UFC.

Of course there could be a number of reasons for their stance against the Ali act, and as a privately owned business the UFC is well within their rights to essentially do what they like. Fighters are individually contracted employees, but more and more athletes are beginning to vocalise their feelings about being underpaid and undervalued. This last week alone has seen two high profile complaints, one of which was brutally shot down by UFC president Dana White.

After dominating and finishing Patrick Cote during the UFC Fight Night 89 co-main event, Donald Cerrone went on record during the post fight presser by saying ‘according to my pay, I don’t mean sh*t to the UFC.’ The statement was later dismissed by Dana White, who claimed Cerrone was ‘inconsistent’ and needed to ‘win them all’ if he wanted a better rate of pay. ‘Cowboy’ is notorious for fighting anyone, anytime, and has a promotional record of 17-4, has the most ever post-fight bonuses of any UFC fighter and is the fist man to be awarded knockout, performance, submission and fight of the night bonuses.

Another fighter on the UFC Ottawa card, Jo Calderwood, made a big splash in smashing Valerie Letoruneau by TKO. After the vicious win in Canada ‘Jo Jo’ declared she was too broke to afford her next fight camp, and would have to work another job to be able to fund her next training period. Dana White’s response was a little different to Calderwood, as he stated ‘she’d get bonused for that fight.’

With the promotion (reportedly) highly likely to change owners (officially) around the time of UFC 200, massive change could be coming in both the way production is handled, but also how fighters are paid. Right now we have the answers to neither of these intriguing concerns, but White tries to clear up some confusion during this recent interview…

The last few weeks have been rife with crazy reports and headlines surrounding current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. His brash and outspoken style until this point has been limited to pre-fight hype periods and keeping interested fans in the loop on his plans between bouts. Now, his antics outside the octagon seem to be far more outlandish, and also very much against the promotion’s wishes by all accounts.

It all started with a retirement announcement by McGregor, which was later revealed to be false but also in connection to some contractual disputes. ‘The Notorious’ didn’t wish to attend the first UFC 200 media conference for his rematch with Nate Diaz, and so he was later pulled from the milestone pay-per-view event. The madness didn’t stop there though.

Conor McGregor..

The self proclaimed face of the UFC was beginning to become agitated, as was obvious by his Twitter rants about PPV numbers declining at UFC 200, and also his further false announcement of being reinstated in his second bout with Diaz. So what was going on with the former company man? That was the question, and it still hasn’t fully been answered, then came the Floyd Mayweather news.

Conor McGregor Floyd Mayweather

Out of the blue emerged rumours that McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather had nearly finalized a deal for a super fight allegedly worth a billion dollars. The MMA and boxing worlds were thrown in to a frenzy, but credible media sources such as Ariel Helwani denied the credibility of the reports, and UFC president Dana White was quick to shoot down these rumours as ‘gutter journalism.’

After hearing from many people connected to both fighters, finally Floyd Mayweather Jr himself has spoken up…

After two great fights on the main card so far, it was time for the UFC Fight Night 86 to go heavy. The first of four heavyweight fights in a row on the main card featured Timothy Johnson and Marcin Tybura, in the lead up to the main event between Junior dos Santos and Ben Rothwell.

Johnson rocking the old time weightlifter moustache here, very vintage, these guys look like they aren’t going to go for that judge’s decision. Grant Waterman of the UK is the referee in charge of the octagon and here we go. They touch gloves, Johnson in southpaw, Tybura in orthodox. Right jabs by Johnson, straight right down the middle for Tybura. Johnson with a nice right hook and Tybura looking a little gun shy if you ask me. They measure each other and now Tybura unleashes some big rear hooks.

Lovely uppercut to the body from Tybura, and now they clinch. Johnson weighing down on his man here, some dirty boxing and shoulder strikes, elbow from Tybura, and a hard knee to the belly too, Waterman rightly separates them. Nice 1-2 combo from Tybura, a couple wiffed replies from Johnson. Nice front kick from Tybura, Johnson throws from outer space and hits air. Round ends, 10-9 Tybura. There seems to be some sound errors as the corner cut scenes play out. Round two begins.

They touch gloves and Johnson lands a few, Tybura isn’t bothered by the awkward southpaw though, remaining very composed in the exchanges. Nice jab by Marcin now, slips the counter too, but now Johnson rips a right hook that cuts Tybura. They exchange and it leads to a clinch. Now the fight cuts out and rewinds to the prelims, and we’re back again more punches from both men but nothing clean. Tybura looking a bit flat now, Johnson landing some better punches. A straight left send Tybura back, and again, but a nice front kick gets Johnson’s attention. Johnson responds with a wild storm of punches, Tybura lasts out the round. 10-9 Johnson.

Round three begins, Johnson moving well, looks to be the fresher man but Tybura lands a takedown and gets the back. Johnson could shake Tybura off from this high position though, he escapes and they stand again. Uppercut grazes the forehead of Tybura, and they clinch again. Johnson winning the fight from position here but it’s not much fun, Waterman intervenes again, just as we rewind again to the prelims. Come on UFC get this sorted out please. Tybura rocks Johnson now with a kick, moving in for the kill and now whips an elbow to the head. They clinch again. Nice knee for Tybura, Johnson has a badly swollen eye now, one minute left. That left eye is brutally swollen, Johnson can’t see from that side surely. Right hand from Tybura, Johnson wings some counters but hits air. Fight over. 10-9 Tybura.

29-28 x 3 victory for Tim Johnson

UFC 197 took a massive hit this week in a strange change of circumstances. After it was originally jeopardised by Jon Jones’ drag racing and subsequent probation violation arrest, the mixed martial arts community was relieved to learn that ‘Bones’ wasn’t going to prison. Receiving more community service and instructed to attend anger management following the vulgar viral video of the traffic stop, Jones was a green light for UFC 197 once again.

With just three weeks until the fight goes down, suddenly the light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier pulls out injured. It’s the first time in the Olympian’s pro career that he’s dropped out of a fight, and it’s possibly the biggest rematch he’ll ever face, after the bitter rivalry before UFC 182 with Jones. Now sidelined, the UFC (well, Ariel Helwani really) announced Cormier’s replacement at UFC 197. In steps Ovince St-Preaux, and the interim belt is on the line!

MMA: UFC 159-Villante vs St. Preux

So what do you think, will OSP stand a chance against arguably one of the greatest fighters to have graced the UFC octagon? St-Preaux’s record is far from unblemished, but he certainly has some very impressive wins. He KO’d former champion from the Pride era and UFC, Mauricio Shogun Rua, and he’s also got wins over Ryan Jimmo, Nikyta Krylov and Rafael Cavalcante.

With Jones though, it’s a totally different story, the guy is just a monster, so it will be interesting to see how OSP approaches such a huge leap in competition in this fight, taken on short notice too.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is embroiled once again in a rivalry with Daniel Cormier. In a contrast to their previous fight, there’s been no media day brawls just yet, and this time around ‘Bones’ is challenging and Cormier is the champion. The hateful feelings between the two 205-pound titans have provided some entertaining snippets in the lead up their eventual UFC 197 rematch, but pales in comparison to the ferocity of their first dance.

It’s not only ‘DC’ that Jones is getting into it with at the present time, there’s another feud brewing with fellow ex-champion and hall of fame legend Chuck Liddell. It all started when someone asked ‘The Iceman’ if he thought he could beat Jon Jones in a fight. This was back when the Greg Jackson’s product was the champion, and obviously Liddell said he thought he’d get the win. This has opened the door to one of the most unexpected back-and-forth battles between Chuck and Jones.

Jon Jones, using his faithful tool of social media, then went on the rampage about Chuck Liddell. Criticising ‘The Iceman’ and saying he had a ‘weak chin’ and calling him a ‘has-been,’ Jones had opened the floodgates, but then a pic posted to Twitter of the two sharing a staredown at a recent UFC event emerged. Was it all good? No, far from it.

Here’s Chuck Liddell’s take on the situation with Jones, and it’s led to a quick and typical reaction from ‘Bones.’

Not one to let these type of criticisms slide, Jones took to social media to give his reaction.

Manny Pacquiao Wants Cris Cyborg On UFC 198

UFC history seems to be repeating itself on a frequent basis lately, one example of this is the situation with Nate Diaz and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Not only in the form of them rematching at UFC 200, but the similarities with another hype train in the lead up to the last landmark pay-per-view card. Yes, McGregor was meant to beat Diaz at UFC 196, as was Brock Lesnar against Frank Mir. In a carbon copy of the last biggest cash cows for the promotion (Lesnar), ‘The Notorious’ will get a second try at Diaz at the monster UFC 200, like the WWE champion did against Mir at UFC 100.

One piece of much more recent mixed martial arts history that seems to be playing in a loop is that of Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg. The tough Brazilian striker has been appealing for years to fight her rival Ronda Rousey in the UFC octagon, but a number of political, weight and money related issues have hindered her joining the promotion.

chris-cyborg-mma

A failed drug test in 2011 saw Justino stripped of her Strikeforce featherweight belt, and provided more than ample ammo for ‘Rowdy’ to use in bashing the Brazilian’s character. In fact, Rousey’s opinion of Cyborg has actually played a massive role in the UFC avoiding the Invicta queen joining the Zuffa clan. That, and the fact Tito Ortiz used to be her manager, and the argument of which weight the two would fight at. Now that Rousey has been dethroned and the belt has changed hands from Holly Holm to Miesha Tate, it’s a whole different ball game.

Now that the women’s bantamweight gates are finally wide open, in a way we’ve never seen before, Cris Cyborg is once again rallying for a place on a UFC pay-per-view card. She was heavily rumoured to be fighting at UFC 193 last year, but UFC president Dana White shot down those tales in short order.

Seemingly looking for some support, Cyborg has gone to some interesting lengths in the last 24 hours. Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is now on the campaign trail for Justino.
