Urijah Faber

Fight legend Urijah Faber made a surprise appearance at the UFC on ESPN 8 weigh-ins earlier today. ‘The California Kid’ took to the scales and made the lightweight limit despite the fact he isn’t scheduled to fight on the card. Faber hasn’t fought since losing to Petr Yan at UFC 245 late last year. The Russian dominated the fight from the start and ultimately finished the fight with a beautiful head-kick KO.

The former WEC champion is currently in Jacksonville, Florida as a coach for Song Yadong who is supposed to be fighting Marlon Vera tomorrow night. However, according to Ariel Helwani Yadong is currently having some visa issues that may prevent him from fighting. If so, the UFC will attempt to make a short-notice fight between Faber and Vera – although it remains unclear if their varying weights will be an issue.

Urijah Faber Could Face Marlon Vera says Ariel Helwani

“Urijah Faber made a surprise appearance at the weigh-ins today. He weighed in at 153.5. The reason he did so is because Song Yadong, who weighed 145.5, has a potential visa issue that may preclude him from fighting tomorrow. They are trying to sort it out. Faber standing by.

“The two main questions right now are: can they issue be sorted in time for the event and if not would the commission allow Faber to fight Vera who weighed in at 145.5. All fluid at the moment.”

An exciting bantamweight contest between Song Yadong and Marlon Vera looks to be in store for fight fans next month.

That’s according to MMA Fighting who states that the matchup is in the works for the UFC’s upcoming May 16 event taking place in Jacksonville, Florida. Both fighters have verbally agreed to the fight with official contracts soon to be signed.

Yadong is undefeated with the promotion ever since making his debut in 2017 as he has gone 4-0-1 in his five UFC fights so far with three finishes. The Team Alpha Male fighter’s most recent outing was a majority decision draw with Cody Stamann back in December.

As for Vera, he has won his last five in a row with all of them coming by way of finish. His most recent outing was a TKO win over Andre Ewell in October. He has struggled to fight since for a variety of reasons with three different fights all getting called off — two of them due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As of now, the May 16 event is headlined by a heavyweight showdown between former title challenger Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris.

More fights and announcements are expected soon.

Jimmie Rivera will not be fighting Marlon Vera at UFC 247.

MMA Junkie has confirmed that Rivera pulled from the scheduled bout due to an undisclosed injury. The UFC has not yet made an official announcement. It also remains unknown if Vera will stay on the card or receive a new opponent. UFC 247 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 8.

The card is headlined by a light heavyweight championship bout between defending champion Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes. Rivera is currently on a two-fight losing streak to names such as Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan. At one point in his career, Rivera was on a 20-fight win streak, not having lost since 2008. However, in June of 2018, Marlon Moraes ended that with a first-round knockout via head-kick.

After picking up a decision win over John Dodson the following September, Rivera is now on a two-fight losing skid. As for Vera, the No. 14-ranked bantamweight is on a five-fight win streak. A win over a name like Rivera will certainly propel him into a new tier of competition.
