Anything can, and often does, happen in the sport of mixed martial arts.

One of the traits that makes MMA the most exciting sport in the world is the utter unpredictability of the action. With almost anything allowed – punches, kicks, elbows, knees, takedowns, slams, ground and pound, and submissions all in play – trying to foresee exactly how a fight will go is often a fool’s errand.

As such, miraculous comebacks are always a possibility, and happen with much more regularity than in other major sports. Victory is often just one well-placed punch, kick, or takedown away. Because a finish negates any scoring that happened prior, athletes in the Octagon are able to mount sudden and stunning turnarounds, even if they had been on the wrong side of a beating.

Still, there are those that stand above the rest. The latest list from LowKick MMA seeks to pick out the best of the best comebacks in UFC history. And by comeback, we mean within the context of a single fight. A comeback like Dominick Cruz returning from years on the shelf to smoke Takeya Mizugaki will not be considered here. Cruz was never losing that bout. What will be taken into account is how badly the fighter was hurt before snatching the victory and the stakes involved in the contest.

Whether eating a devastating strike and overcoming it, or getting consistently outfought and snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, comebacks come in many forms. Continue reading to see our picks for the greatest ones in UFC history. If there are any that we’ve missed, be sure sure to let us know in the comments below!

Over the course of the sport’s short history, Thailand’s revered Muay Thai kickboxing has become one of the most common and successful bases from which to transfer to MMA.

While we’ve learned that having skills in only one discipline is not a recipe for success in the modern version of MMA, many fighters with a focus on “the art of eight limbs” have found incredible success in the Octagon.

Originating in Thailand, where a booming professional scene still flourishes, Muay Thai is now used by combatants from all over the world.

This piece aims to rank the ten best fighters employing the striking style today. Devastating clinch work, slashing elbows, whipping kicks, and crushing knees all could gain a fighter entry to this list, as well as a traditional Muay Thai background. Those that use them to the most damaging effect, rely on them as fundamental to their games, and utilize a combination of these characteristic techniques set themselves apart and climb the ranks.

This is not an all-time list. That may come later. This one looks at the fighters on the current UFC roster most likely to finish a fight from the thai plum, break someone’s nose with a standing elbow, or send an opponent crashing to the canvas with a knee to the solar plexus.

UFC welterweight veteran Matt Brown has been no stranger to headlines this week, as The Ultimate Fighter 7 (TUF 7) alumni has signed a new eight fight contract with the promotion, as well as being booked to a bout against Jake Ellenberger at UFC 201 in Atlanta.

The main event of UFC 201 is a welterweight title bout between reigning champion Robbie Lawler and No. 3-ranked Tyron Woodley.

matt brown assault tarec saffiedineBrown, who is currently the No. 8-ranked welterweight in the world, recently dished on the upcoming 170-pound title bout and more on his Great Debate MMA podcast this week.

The first topic of discussion was Brown’s new eight fight deal, and the resulting upset amongst fans:

“I got what I wanted really, to be honest,” Brown said. “A lot of people seem to not like that I signed an eight fight deal.

If you go on the forums and stuff a lot of people are like, ‘Why do these fighters do this?’ But I’ve been in the UFC a long time —- there’s nowhere else I’d want to be.

As long as I’m fighting and I’m making money fighting, I’m living my (expletive) dream. I’m happy as (expletive).”

‘The Immortal’ then discussed his upcoming bout against Ellenberger, following his loss to the surging No. 4-ranked jiu-jitsu wiz Demian Maia:

“Jake is a great fighter. Even though he’s lost a few fights lately, we know how dangerous he is,” Brown said. “That makes it more dangerous for me, right?

I’ve got a guy we all know he’s dangerous. He’s hurt some guys bad, he’s knocked some guys out. He’s explosive. He’s an athlete.

… Now he’s on the cutting block probably, and he’s probably got his back up to the wall. He’s being cornered here. That’s a dangerous spot for me to put him in.”

Robbie Lawler 1Brown then predicted that the upcoming title bout between Lawler and Woodley should be a ‘gimme fight’ for ‘Ruthless’:

“I think it’s an easy fight for Lawler,” Brown said. “I think it’s sort of, I don’t know if I’d say gimme fight, but I mean it’s definitely, this is the type of fight Lawler should shine in.

He’s an extremely hard guy to take down and has all the tools on the feet, obviously, to knock Woodley out. Woodley has a chance in the early rounds and I think that’s probably about it.”

Despite suffering three losses in his last four fights, Brown (20-14) has signed a new eight-fight contract with the promotion. News of the signing was first reported by FOXSports.

Brown is coming off a submission loss to Demian Maia in Brazil following a submission win last July over Tim Means. Prior to that, he suffered back-to-back decision losses to Johny Hendricks and current UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

An Ohio native, Brown’s next fight is likely to take place in September when the Octagon debuts in Cleveland for UFC 203. Fellow Ohioan Stipe Miocic defends his heavyweight title against Alistair Overeem on that card.

Video: Matt Brown Goes On A Rant About Tyron Woodley, Calls Him A “B*tch”

Apparently Matt Brown doesn’t think very highly of UFC Welterweight title contender Tyron Woodley.

While speaking with Jonathan Shrager of MMA Underground this week (watch above), “The Immortal” one made it clear that he isn’t a big fan of “The Chosen One.”

“[Tyron] Woodley, he’s a bitch,” said Brown. “I just don’t like him anyway. I’d fight him in the f**king street for free.”

Brown would elaborate, explaining his dislike for the UFC 170-pound contender, who will be the next man to challenge Robbie Lawler for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 201 in July.

“You go all the way back, he turned down fights. I know he turned down Hector Lombard saying, ‘he’s a teammate’ and then Hector’s like, ‘we’re not teammates, f*ck you, I’ll fight you.’ So that’s a clear bitch move.

“And then sitting out for a year and a half begging for a title shot, coming over a win over – what’s Gastelum? Probably fourteen or fifteen [in the rankings] – a very unimpressive win over a sick Gastellum. He had the flu, right. Missed weight by ten pounds.”

Brown’s anti-Woodley rant wouldn’t end there.

“I’ll tell you what originally kind of got me disliking Woodley is how he claims that he won over Carlos Condit. That’s just simply not a win. You cannot claim that a win. Yeah you won the first round but you won the fight by default. Condit got hurt. Condit’s not a one round fighter. You don’t see Condit win too many fights in the first round. He gets stronger as the fight goes on and he was just starting to pick it up on Woodley and Woodley is a one round fighter.

“Then he’s always on Twitter just talking and he told me to keep my name out of his mouth when he’s the one talking to me. He’s just not the personality that I like. He’s not a warrior, he’s not a soldier. If we were on the battlefields in the 1200’s, in the Medieval, the Dark Ages, this motherf*cker would be back hiding in the bushes while guys like me, I’d be on the fucking front lines with a sword in my hand. He’d be over in the f*cking bushes throwing tomatoes and shit or something. So he’s not my kind of person.”

Brown concluded, “He’s getting the title shot. I can’t complain about that. I worry about myself. I ain’t worried about what he’s doing but I think Lawler’s gonna knock him out pretty good.”

UFC 201: Lawler vs. Woodley is scheduled for July 30, 2016 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
