Michael Chiesa wants Colby Covington next — but don’t expect him to engage in any trash talk.

Chiesa made it three wins in a row at welterweight when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Raleigh this past weekend. He proceeded to call out Covington in his post-fight interview as he felt it was the only fight that made sense.

Should that fight get booked, Chiesa will not only have to deal with one of the best welterweights on the planet, but also the mental warfare that Covington brings with his trash talk.

But Chiesa won’t be participating in any trash talk. After all, he doesn’t do that well in that aspect of the fight game and feels it would be a losing cause against Covington.

However, he is ready to test himself both physically and mentally against the former interim welterweight champion:

“I’m not going to go and get in a verbal pissing match with the guy, that’s for sure,” Chiesa said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “He’d shut me out. I’m not good at the trash-talking stuff. I’ve shown that.

“But I think the guy is a phenomenal fighter. I think it would be a big test for me because not only will he test me physically in the fight, but mentally, he’s going to put me through the ringer. He does that to all the guys he fights. … I want to test myself. I think that’s the ultimate test — Colby Covington — so why not fight him?”

Chiesa added that he had no idea whether Covington wants the fight or has responded to the prospect. But it should be interesting to hear what “Chaos” has to say about it.

Michael Chiesa explained why he decided to call out Colby Covington.

Chiesa made it three wins in a row since moving up to welterweight when he outpointed Rafael dos Anjos in the co-main event of UFC Raleigh on Saturday night.

“Maverick” kept his post-fight interview short as he called out Covington soon after. It’s an intriguing matchup and one Chiesa feels he deserves given that he just beat the No. 5-ranked Dos Anjos.

“I just beat the No. 5 ranked guy in the world,” Chiesa told reporters after the fight (via MMA Junkie). “I always say the most important time to ask for a fight is after you win. You’ve got to capitalize. I’m not out to engage in some verbal pissing match with the guy. I respect his skills. He’s super tough. I’m just trying to get to a world title. I think that’s the fight that makes the most sense when you look at the top five.

“I said before the fight if I beat Rafael dos Anjos, I’m not fighting anyone who’s less than five. I’m taking his spot. Looking at the landscape of the division, that’s the fight that makes sense. I want to be tested. I want to fight the best, so Colby it is.”

Chiesa had his sights set on Covington a month ago when the latter failed in his attempt to win the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman at UFC 245.

Given how that fight played out along with other members of the top five being booked against each other, Chiesa felt no other matchup made sense.

“I waited to see how (UFC) 245 ended,” Chiesa added. “I wanted to see what happened with Tyron (Woodley) and Leon (Edwards) and everybody. I think it’s a fight that makes sense. I wouldn’t go ask for some outlandish matchup.

“Anytime I’ve won a fight and asked for an opponent, I’ve usually gotten it. That’s because it’s all well thought out. I just don’t throw things against the wall that aren’t going to stick. I just think it’s a fight that makes sense. I think it’s a fight I could get, so we’ll see what happens.”

If the UFC wants to put together a boxing match between Jorge Masvidal and multi-weight world champion Canelo Alvarez, Michael Chiesa fully supports the move.

Masvidal called the Mexican star out after his UFC 244 victory over Nate Diaz. “Gamebred” said he wanted to “destroy” Alvarez. However, when questioned about this, Alvarez sounded very uninterested.

“With all due respect, I always felt that I have no business being in an MMA cage,” Alvarez said. “I think the same, if they came to box, they have no business being there. From a business standpoint, yes, it’s attractive, but it’s not my priority.”

Recently, UFC welterweight Michael Chiesa was interviewed by MMA Junkie to get his take on the subject. Chiesa noted that, should the UFC ultimately decide to book a Masvidal vs. Alvarez boxing match, he supports it. “Maverick” believes Masvidal deserves to make the life-changing money such a fight would bring.

“Now, the things you can do with Jorge Masvidal, screw it, set up him in a boxing match,” Chiesa said. “Jorge is in a great position that he can be whatever he wants to be. If he wants to jump into the title fight after (UFC) 245 he can do that.

“If he wanted to get a boxing match with Canelo Alvarez, you could probably make it happen. People love these crossover fights, I don’t disagree with them at all. He’s in a good position, and Nate (Diaz) is, as well, and both guys deserve it.”

What do you make of Chiesa throwing support behind a potential Masvidal vs. Alvarez matchup?
