Bellator Reveals Opening Round Of Welterweight Grand Prix

The Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix bracket is official.

The post Bellator Reveals Opening Round Of Welterweight Grand Prix appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix tournament bracket is officially set and will kick off at Bellator 206 on September 29, 2018.

Earlier today (Aug. 6, 2018) Bellator announced the bracket seedings for the welterweight GP via Instagram. But the news didn’t stop there, as they announced Paul Daley as one of the eight men involved in the tournament.

Daley’s participation was in question due to his ongoing contract issues with the promotion, but now that is all squared away, Daley is in.

The bracket breaks down as such:

One one side of the bracket Michael “Venom” Page (13-0) will take on fellow Brit Paul “Semtex” Daley (40-16-2) in a grudge match years in the making. Joining them on that side of the bracket are two former champions in Douglas “The Phenom” Lima (29-7) and Andrey “The Spartan” Koreshkov (21-2).

On the other side of the bracket waits reigning welterweight champion Rory “Red King” MacDonald (20-4) defending his belt against Jon Fitch (31-7-1). The winner of that bout will take on either Neiman Gracie (8-0) or fellow unbeaten prospect “EZ” Ed Ruth (6-0).

It seems Scott Coker has thought this Grand Prix out well after all this isn’t his first rodeo. Yaroslav Amasov (20-0) will fight Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (19-7) with the winner earning the coveted alternate spot should one of the eight participants be unable to compete. It should be noted that reigning UFC double champ Daniel “DC” Cormier won the Strikeforce heavyweight GP as an alternate.

All fights are expected to be five-round affairs regardless of where and when they take place on the card. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this tournament is that the welterweight title will be up for grabs a total of three times. So, in theory, we could see a new 170-pound champion be crowned three more times in 2018.

The welterweight GP kicks off Sept. 29 at Bellator 206 with Daley vs. Page; the event will be the first on the streaming platform DAZN.

Paul Daley Calls Out Michael Page After Signing New Deal

Paul Daley signed a new, multi-year deal with Bellator and will compete in the WW grand prix.

Not only has Paul “Semtex” Daley signed a new multi-fight, multi-year deal with Bellator, but the brash Brit will be competing in the welterweight world grand prix as well.

The resigning of Daley was something that didn’t seem possible just a few short weeks ago, as the hard-hitting welterweight had some harsh words for President Scott Coker following his loss to Jon Fitch at Bellator 199 earlier this year.

It appears both Coker and Daley have buried the hatchet in the interest of making money.

Speaking to MMAjunkie earlier today, Coker would not specify on who “Semtex” would be fighting in the first round of the grand prix, but he did reiterate that Daley would, in fact, be apart of the tournament as the tenth official combatant. His manager Ali Adbelaziz told MMA Fighting that he hopes Daley will fight Michael “Venom” Page after a long, bad blood-filled backstory between the two British knockout specialists:

“This is who me and Paul want to fight, and who the fans want to see fight, “Abdelaziz said. “I’m so honored to be part of this, and I have no doubt Paul to going to knock him the f*ck out.”

The welterweight world grand prix is set to kick off Sept. 29 in San Jose, Calif. The event will be the first to take place on new streaming platform DAZN. The 170-pound tournament is coming together nicely. Here is the list of fighters that have already been officially announced to take part in the tournament:

Rory MacDonald

Lorenz Larkin

Ed Ruth

Paul Daley

Jon Fitch

Douglas Lima

Andrey Koreshkov

Yaroslav Amosov.

Michael Page

Neiman Gracie

Michael ‘Venom’ Page Discusses Mixing Boxing & MMA

Moving forward, it appears as if Michael Page will continue to fight both in the ring and in the cage:

Bellator welterweight standout Michael ‘Venom’ Page has made a name for himself in the mixed martial arts cage, compiling a perfect professional record of 13-0 with eight of those victories coming by way of T/KO, but he’s seen success in the boxing ring as well.

In fact, Page is coming off of a second-round knockout victory over Michal Ciach this past weekend (June 15, 2018) in London, England, extending his professional record to 2-0. He has, however, had difficulty finding tough competition, although it’s obviously still very early on in his career.

Speaking to that after his most recent fight, Page explained why that has been the case:

“(It’s) understandable what an ‘0’ means for a lot of boxers,” Page told MMAjunkie. “For a lot of anybody in combat, it means a lot in terms of their next paycheck and the development in their career. Their fans, their social, everything. We’re like, ‘Yeah, that guy’s got a good record, so let’s call them out’ – 10-2s, 10-0, he’s 12-0, he’s 12-1, whatever it is. And they’re like, ‘Not interested.’

“They’ve got a career that they want to improve. They don’t want to be on TV with that happening to them, and I understand it because it knocks them backside. Frustratingly so for me, but, at the same time, I have to take my time. I know a lot of people are like, ‘We want you to fight this person, that person’ – it’s just not that simple. I understand it. Hopefully, I want people to start thinking, ‘You know what, I can get the better of him,’ and they take that risk and jump in there.”

Moving forward, the man known as ‘MVP’ appears to have quite a bit of options and he said that he’d like to take on another boxing match before returning to MMA later this year:

“It takes a little while to kind of get the promotional side and just the opponents and stuff in terms of the MMA,” Page said. “Because they have a plan on what show they want me on. They’re businessmen, so they understand exactly what the best thing to do is. It’s a bit more of a chess game there, so I’m thinking it might take a little bit longer.

“I’m hoping to try and get another boxing fight in before having to jump back in the cage. It might change, but I’m saying now: Maybe one more boxing (match), August, early August, then straight on to an MMA fight, September, November, whenever I can strive for that.”

Regardless of what he does next, however, Page made it clear that MMA remains his ‘home’:

“I obviously have more tools available to me in MMA,” Page said. “I’m a person that likes kicks and things like that, as well, because I can be a little more creative. So I have to say MMA is still my home.”
