Romero

We haven’t seen the last of Yoel Romero in a title fight, at least at middleweight.

Romero suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Israel Adesanya in what was a lackluster middleweight title headliner at UFC 248 in March.

Both fighters received criticism for their lack of activity during the fight and although many believe Adesanya did enough to win, there are also some observers who felt Romero should have won the title.

Regardless, the Cuban is 1-4 in his last five fights and has failed to come out on top in each of his scheduled middleweight title fights. It would be a miracle if he got another title shot at least going by UFC president Dana White’s remarks.

But for American Top Team head coach Mike Brown — who rates Romero as the greatest athlete he’s ever seen — he wouldn’t be surprised if the 42-year-old clawed back to another title shot.

“He’s the greatest athlete I’ve ever seen, (even) at this age,” Brown told MMA Junkie. “What he can do with his body is incredible, I’ve never seen anything like it: speed, reaction time, agility. I mean, he’s in his 40s and his reaction time is incredible, the speed is incredible, his coordination is incredible.

“The more I see guys like him, the more I realize what a terrible athlete I am. I can’t imagine what he was like when he was 30 or 25. It must have been unbelievable. I know he’s a world champion in wrestling and this is so difficult, wrestling is so deep and so many people are competing for the same title, it’s very competitive. He got a very late start in MMA and he’s done some amazing things.

“You have to worry about time catches up to everybody, but right now – how he looks in the gym and what he can do – I mean, I definitely see him getting back to the title.”

Leading up to UFC 248, Romero claimed he wanted to fight for another decade or so. While Brown is uncertain about that, he isn’t ruling out the possibility either given how Romero is currently performing at his age.

As for the fight with Adesanya, he felt his fighter did enough to earn the victory though he acknowledged it was a very close fight.

“I don’t know about that [Romero fighting another 10 years], but I mean I can’t believe he looks like he does right now,” Brown said. “You don’t know when things are going to change, but right now, he can beat anybody in the world. On any night he’s as good as anybody. He was right there that night. That night, when it came down to the scorecards – even though it was a boring fight, people didn’t like it – but in my head I thought he had done enough in those rounds to win.

“Watching it live, the leg kicks didn’t feel like enough. To me, it felt like Adesanya was on the run more or maybe in danger of getting finished more. I mean you can’t always see the angles if the punches are landing or not, but Yoel would attack and Adesanya was stumbling around, maybe the punches were missing, but its hard to tell sometimes. But from the outside I thought he had won. But again I knew they were close again, so I didn’t know how the judges had scored it, but if I were scoring it I’d say he had won three of those rounds, but again, I knew they were close enough to argue either way.”

What do you make of Brown’s comments?

Tensions between former friends and American Top Team (ATT) teammates Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington have risen over the past few months.

Covington is now preparing to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight championship, while Masvidal might very well be in line to challenge the winner next. However, should a fight between Masvidal and Covington materialize, it will be interesting to see how the ATT gym handles things. Speaking to MMA Fighting, ATT coach Mike Brown offered his thoughts on the situation.

Brown explained that he doesn’t want to see two ATT guys fighting each other, admitting it’s a good problem to have, but not necessarily a great thing for the gym.

“The Covington thing is complex because it’s another guy who comes out of [American Top Team] so it has more complexities,” Brown said. “I don’t necessarily like the idea of guys fighting each other. It doesn’t bother Jorge at all but I would prefer not to see that.

“I don’t necessarily like two American Top Team guys fighting each other. There’s a lot of complexities to it. Yeah, it’s a good problem to have but not necessarily great for the gym.”

Brown further explained how tensions can arise when teammates are preparing to fight one another, noting how fighters may feel other guys’ coaches are watching them train, causing a feeling of discomfort.

“Each guy is maybe worried about the other guy’s coaches watching them train. Now you’re in a place where eyes are always watching you that are studying you,” Brown explains. “It’s not a good feeling.

“It’s not an ideal situation, guys fighting each other. In a tournament or for a belt, it can happen but it’s not something that I like to see.”

Do you think Masvidal and Covington will eventually fight inside the Octagon down the road?

Jorge Masvidal Coach Believes Nate Diaz Rematch Would Be ‘Same Thing’

UFC 244 featured a fairly lopsided main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. The pair competed for the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship inside Madison Square Garden.

It was all Masvidal from start to finish, with Diaz showing a bit more life as the third round came to a close. However, due to the nasty cuts on Diaz’s eye, the doctor decided to step in and stop the fight in controversial fashion. Much talk of a rematch has emerged since the bout’s conclusion.

Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. Recently, Masvidal’s coach, Mike Brown of American Top Team (ATT), spoke to MMA Fighting regarding the Diaz bout. Brown broke down exactly what the gameplan for Diaz was heading into UFC 244.

“He had some tricks up his sleeve that he didn’t use that he was planning on executing. So there were one or two things that he didn’t do that he wanted to do,” Brown said. “We won’t give them away in case he still fights Diaz again.

“Basically, [the game plan] was beat him up with kicks and fight him in the clinch, then beat him in the clinch. If it goes to the ground, be on top. Get our head free, good posture, ground and pound and kind of exactly what you saw was the game plan.”

Brown noted that things went about as expected as the fight played out. The ATT coach went on to credit Diaz’s toughness and knew it would be nearly impossible to put the Stockton slugger away.

“That first minute was crazy. He hurt him bad with that elbow and he fell over and then [Jorge] hit him with that head kick. I can’t believe he took it,” Brown said. “Then Jorge was landing some heavy ground and pound. It was brutal stuff. A lot of heavy shots.

“Nate’s got an incredible chin and like Jorge said, he’s a dog. You have to kill him to get him out of there. Honestly, it went a lot like we expected. We were confident. We thought [Jorge] was better in those areas. We thought it would look like that. We thought Nate would be tough as hell.

“We thought it would be nearly impossible to put him away and everything kind of was as we expected.”

In regards to a rematch, if it were to happen, Brown doesn’t see things going much differently. On a bad day the rounds would be close, but he still sees “Gamebred” coming out on top.

“I think we’d see the same thing,” Brown said. “That was pretty damn one-sided. He won all three rounds, all three were pretty one-sided. I think that’s how it’s always going to be.

“I mean on a good day Jorge gets him out of there, and on a bad day, maybe the rounds are a little closer but [Jorge] still wins them. That’s what I see.”

As far as what’s next for Masvidal, it’s simple, the Floridian is going wherever the biggest payday is.

“I just know with Jorge, he only really cares about the biggest paycheck. At the end of the day, it’s whatever is going to bring the biggest money,” Brown said. “In a way, I think he told them he’ll do it again and Jorge is a man of his word. He’ll fight Diaz again.

“Whether it’s in a few months or in one year, they’ll fight again I’m sure. It’s just about the timing. Whatever is going to bring the next biggest payday. I mean Nate would be another payday or maybe Conor [McGregor] is the biggest payday.

“Whether it’s the [Kamaru] Usman-Colby [Covington] winner, whoever the winner might be, I think all Jorge really cares about is from the business side and what’s going to pay him the most money.”

Do you agree with Brown that a rematch between Masvidal and Diaz would be the “same thing?”
