Mike Perry has explained why he won’t be fighting Kevin Lee at UFC 264 on July 10.

‘The Motown Phenom’ is clearly keen to get back in the Octagon after spending more than one year out due to injury. Lee required surgery on a torn ACL and unfortunately, during the rehabilitation process, tore his other ACL — resulting in a prolonged stint on the sidelines.

Lee took to social media to call out Perry earlier this week. Soon after, Lee again took to social media to confirm ‘Platinum’ had turned down the opportunity to face him.

“Not gonna lie some hoe shit to turn down the fight @platinummikeperry I was tryna help u out heard u was getting fired but I see you don’t got it in you no more,” Lee said on his Instagram. “I’ll go after a legit contender I guess.”

Perry has since explained that he is taking some time away to work on his game after a run of poor form.

“I am trying to progress. I have built bad habit,” Perry wrote on social media. I needed to take time off and my hand still hurts from the one time I punched Drod. I want to be in the gym training and focused before I accepted anything. Trying to be a real professional. Prep takes time. Plus I’m moving July.”

Perry has lost five of his last seven fights and currently sits outside the welterweight rankings. Most recently, ‘Platinum’ was outpointed by Daniel Rodriguez over three rounds at UFC Vegas 23.

Lee last fought at UFC Brasillia in March 2020. The 28-year-old looked good early but ultimately fell to a submission defeat against Charles Oliveira who will compete for UFC gold this weekend. Lee has won just two of his last six fights and the last time he competed at welterweight was in 2019 when he lost to Rafael Dos Anjos via arm triangle choke.

Do you think Mike Perry is making the right call by refusing to fight Kevin Lee at UFC 264?

Kevin Lee is accusing UFC veteran welterweight Mike Perry of turning down a fight with him for his return to the octagon.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Lee took aim at Perry and accused him of not wanting a fight with the former interim lightweight title challenger.

“Not gonna lie some hoe shit to turn down the fight @platinummikeperry I was tryna help u out heard u was getting fired but I see you don’t got it in you no more. I’ll go after a legit contender I guess.” Lee said on his Instagram.

Lee has been looking for a fight since the start of the new year in his first bout since falling to Charles Oliveira in a UFC Fight Night main event in early 2020. As for Perry, he could be on his way out of the UFC after losing four of his last five bouts, including a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Vegas 23 just weeks ago.

Lee has had an up-and-down stretch of competition since losing to Tony Ferguson in an interim lightweight title fight at UFC 216. After a brief layoff, Lee returned to competition with a TKO win over Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244, and before that had lost two of his last three fights at lightweight following the defeat to Ferguson.

Perry has been noted as one of the most active fighters in UFC history, but it’s unclear what his future with the promotion will hold.

Perry had a lot to say about his future following the devastating loss to Rodriguez.

“I used to be great,” Perry said in an Instagram post following the bout. “I have one fight left on my contract and I’ll give it my all for my family. Whatever I have to do to give them a better life.”

A fight between Lee and Perry is sure to be a fan-favored scrap if the promotion goes forward and schedules it, but as of right now it seems that is just a fantasy and far from a reality. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next for both of the toughest athletes in the UFC.

Mike Perry Jake Paul

Mike Perry isn’t too fond of Jake Paul’s recent comment that the UFC veteran was ‘light work’ during a recent sparring session leading up to Paul’s boxing match with Ben Askren.

After UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier posted on Twitter that he would like to see Perry take on the YouTuber turned Boxer, Paul responded to the tweet with a differing opinion.

“He was light work,” Paul tweeted. “In his own words, “you kicked my ass”, I want to see Jake Paul vs. Dustin Prober.”

Paul also shared a brief clip of a conversation between himself and Perry, in which “Platinum” does make the remark “Good job man. You kicked my ass”.

Perry didn’t take Paul’s tweet in kind, and leaked his own 10-second clip of the two sparring in the ring.

“I took your best shots and walked you down all day,” Perry posted on his Instagram. “You showed heart and you’re already successful and you seemed to have a strong team (power in numbers), but you’re a spoiled brat and I’m rich in life.”

Perry and Paul share some similarities, as the two of them are no stranger to controversy away from combat sports. Perry has been recorded using racial slurs and striking an elderly man outside a restaurant in Texas, while Paul has been recently accused of sexual assault by TikTok star Justine Paradise; a claim in which he has vehemently denied.

Perry could be near the end of his UFC career after falling to Daniel Rodriguez last week at UFC Vegas 23, dropping his record in the UFC to 7-8. The UFC veteran has also publically questioned his next move after suffering defeat to Rodriguez.

Paul is coming off his viral knockout victory over Askren on Saturday night in an event hosted by Triller Fight Club. It’s unclear as to who Paul will challenge in the ring next, but it’s sure to garner the attention of Boxing and MMA fans alike.
