Francis Ngannou and legendary pugilist ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson put some work in during an open workout session on Tuesday evening.

The former UFC heavyweight world champion is roughly a month away from his highly anticipated return to combat sports. But this time, ‘The Predator’ won’t be stepping into the cage. Instead, he’ll get back to his roots by strapping on the 10-ounce gloves for a clash in the squared circle with perhaps the greatest boxer in the world today, Tyson Fury.

Ahead of their showdown in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on October 28, Francis Ngannou showed off his evolution as a striker during an open workout session in Las Vegas alongside boxing icon Mike Tyson.

Francis Ngannou is Getting Back to His Roots

Going into the contest, many fight fans believe that Francis Ngannou’s only chance to walk away with the victory is by landing one big punch. While ‘The Predator’ has made a name for himself with his legendary knockout power, Ngannou is more than ready to show the world that he’s more than a one-shot type of fighter.

“In fact, that’s what I’m going to prove,” Ngannou said during Tuesday’s open workout media scrum in Las Vegas. “That’s why I’m doing this. I think, OK, the one-shot guy, you can get away with the one shot for some time, but not always. I have heard that same story before. Looks like deja vu.”

Before dominating the world of mixed martial arts, Francis Ngannou began training as a boxer. Getting back to where it all began for him, Ngannou sees his fight with the reigning WBC heavyweight champion as a boxer vs. a boxer. Not MMA vs. boxing.

“I know there is a difference,” Ngannou said. “I never thought it was the same thing. There’s some similarities, basically, as a combat sport, but they are very different on the focus, the training on the stance, and everything. Just a little reminder: I started doing boxing even before MMA, and when I came to MMA, I had to adjust my boxing style to fit in MMA. Otherwise, it wouldn’t work.”

He continued, “I see it more like two boxers. For this fight, I’m not training with an MMA mentality like I’m an MMA guy. I’m going out there to box. I’m training as a boxer. I’m not seeing myself as an MMA guy, so I hope you guys, too, see me as a boxer” (h/t MMA Junkie).

John Fury, father of WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, does not seem best pleased with Mike Tyson…

Fury and Ngannou are set to square-off against one another in just a month time in a 10 round boxing match. The bout will  be held on October 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and while Ngannou will be a sizeable underdog with a slim chance of victory will also pick up a life changing payday.

Ngannou will however have the help of former undisputed heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, who is set to be in the corner for the fight.

This may cause a slight rift between the two teams as fury was named after Tyson, with his father saying on numerous occasions that he was his favrioute fighter.

Neither Fury seem particularly happy about the new pairing.

“Irritating,” the elder Fury said reacting to the corner appointment.  “I named my son after this man and he’s in his opponents corner, but that’s business and the business of the game we’re in. Would I want him in Tyson’s corner, yes I would, but he’s a grown man and can make his own decisions.” (H/T Talk Sport)

Tyson Fury agrees with John Fury

‘The Gypsy King’ appears to agree with his father and described the move as ‘sad’.

“The man that I am named after, a legend, has to go against me and then come out as a loser, having lost to a man who was named after him,” the Gypsy King said. “I think that it’s sad and I think that he should be in my corner, not the opposing corner, but business is business and I understand that it’s strictly business.”

“No matter what he teaches this fella , no matter how much boxing training he does, everyone has got a plan until they get punched in the face and I’m not sure who said that, but that is true.”

John Fury is ready to strap on the eigh-ounce gloves for a geriatric showdown with boxing legend ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.

On October 28, Fury’s son and reigning WBC heavyweight world champion, Tyson Fury, will step back into the squared circle for a showdown with ex-UFC titleholder Francis Ngannou. The pair will headline an event in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before ‘The Predator’ turns his attention back toward the world of mixed martial arts.

To prepare for his pro boxing debut, Francis Ngannou called in one of the heaviest hitters in the history of the sport for some guidance. Mike Tyson has been working with ‘The Predator’ in recent weeks, pushing the Cameroonian to work past his prior limitations.

Much of the attention surrounding the titanic non-title fight has been focused on Ngannou’s work with Mike Tyson.

Speaking about the former unified champ’s involvement in the festivities, John Fury suggested that the two veterans could throw on some gloves and compete as part of the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou undercard.

“Why wouldn’t I not speak to Mike Tyson,” Fury said in an interview with Seconds Out. “I love the guy, I named my son after him.

“If he wants to fight me on the undercard he can, no problem.” The 59-year-old added. “I’m a fighting man. I’m old but I’m a fighting man. He’s a fighting man. He’s old. We’re two geriatrics. If he wants to fight me and I want to fight him, which I do, I’ve made it quite clear, we can do it. I’ve been knocked out before, doesn’t make any difference to me, as long as we can entertain the paying public and put smiles on their faces, that’ll do me.”

While John Fury is mostly known for being the outspoken and sometimes unhinged father of Tyson and Tommy Fury, the Irish-British cornerman competed in the sweet science for eight years, earning a record of 8-4-1 before walking away from the sport altogether in 1995. At one point, he competed in eight straight bouts without a loss but suffered back-to-back defeats before calling it a career.

Heavyweight boxing legend ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson is combining his two favorite things for an event fight fans never knew that they always needed.

On August 27, the former undisputed world champion is promoting the first ever Weed Boxing Championship. The event is scheduled to go down on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand and it is exactly what you think it is.

Emanating from Samui International Muay Thai Stadium, athletes will compete in three three-minute rounds, but only before they get higher than a bat’s ass with some premium kush provided by cannabis aficionado Mike Tyson. Spectators are also encouraged to partake in their preferred strain with plenty of drinks and food to go around once everyone starts to get the munchies.

Mike Tyson Wishes He Had Used Marijuana While Competing

The event looks to take advantage of Thailand’s bustling weed tourism after the Southeast Asian country decriminalized the plant in June 2022. Almost overnight, dispenceries popped up and events across the country have taken advantage.

Of course, Thailand is already known for it’s steep history in the art of eight limbs, Muay Thai, but this will be the first time that two worlds are fused together in a spectacle unlike any other.

Sadly, Mike Tyson will not be participating in the event, aside from potentially toking up with some of the event’s competitors.

“Cannabis is good to workout on for me. I just wish I was smoking back when I was fighting — I really lost out there from an athlete’s perspective,” the sports icon said in an interview with Muscle and Health magazine. “If I’d smoked during my boxing career, I probably wouldn’t have been so aggressive.”

If only he had known then what he knows now, perhaps Evander Holyfield’s ear could have been saved.

Heavyweight boxing legend ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson has no doubt which fight was the absolute best of his illustrious career.

Mike Tyson walked away from the sport in 2005 after amassing an impressive record of 50-6 and reigning as the undisputed heavyweight world champion for nearly three years. Today, Tyson is passing on his expertise to former UFC champion Francis Ngannou as ‘The Predator’ gears up for his first appearance in the squared circle.

On October 28, Ngannou will square off with current WBC heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury in a highly anticipated crossover clash emanating from Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Before signing on the dotted line for his first professional boxing bout, Ngannou was one of the most feared strikers in mixed martial arts, capturing the UFC heavyweight title via a vicious second-round knockout against Stipe Miocic in their UFC 260 rematch. However, Ngannou’s career wasn’t without its setbacks. In fact, Ngannou’s first time competing against Miocic came with a significantly different result.

Mike Tyson and Francis Ngannou Reveal the Most Important Fights of Their Careers

In January 2018, Ngannou came up short against Miocic, suffering a unanimous decision defeat, the first loss of his UFC career. Speaking about the defeat on the Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast, ‘The Predator’ revealed that his loss to Miocic was probably the most important fight of his career.

“That was my real first fight [against Miocic], I lost that fight and then I think that, from that night, I understood everything,” Ngannou said. “If you ask me, so far, that was the best fight in my career.”

Mike Tyson knew exactly where Ngannou was coming from, adding that his shocking upset loss to Buster Douglas in 1990 was the best fight of his career for similar reasons.

“That’s how I feel about my fight with Buster Douglas,” Tyson added. “It was the best fight of my career. People won’t understand it.”

Mike Tyson relinquished the undisputed heavyweight title that night, but he bounced back, scoring eight-straight wins and reclaiming the WBC and WBA world championships despite a four-year-long layoff from the sport.
