On March 3rd, red-hot women’s MMA prospect Ronda Rousey will drop to 135 pounds for the first time to challenge Miesha Tate for her Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title. Rousey’s pro MMA career isn’t even a year old yet, and she’s already facing the world’s top-ranked 135’er, a woman who holds victories over such big names as Marloes Coenen and Zoila Gurgel.
And according to oddsmakers, Miesha Tate is dead meat.
Props to MiddleEasy for alerting us to the current betting odds for next month’s Tate vs. Rousey showdown in Columbus, Ohio. Due to her string of armbar victories within the first minute of her fights, Ronda Rousey is as high as a -375 favorite in the matchup, with Tate slated as a +275 ‘dog. That, my friends, is insane.

Should Rousey be the favorite here at all? It’s hard to say. Miesha Tate represents such an extraordinary leap in competition level for Rousey, that it’s nearly impossible to predict how their fight will play out. This will be the match that determines if Ronda is overhyped or the real deal. And yet, the oddsmakers have already decided that this is Ronda’s fight to lose.
With a pairing this volatile, we wouldn’t actually recommend that you bet money on this fight. But if you’re a Miesha fan, you might want to jump on this line early.
Semi-related: Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey is scheduled to take place the same day as UFC on FX 2. For the last time, Zuffa — you own Strikeforce now, so you can stop trying to bury them with counter-programming.

Preliminary Card (HDNet, 8 p.m. ET)
Gesias Cavalcante (-115) vs. Justin Wilcox (+110)
Conor Heun (+120) vs. Magno Almeida (-130)
Nah-Shon Burrell (+275) vs. Joe Ray (-313)
Todd Moore (+260) vs. Mike Bronzoulis (-280)
Brian Melancon (-115) vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg (+105)
The Main Event: Look, I hug Ubereem’s nuts as much as the next dude. I’m just saying, Werdum was a +430 underdog against Fedor Emelianenko, and he managed to end that fight in 69 seconds. (He was also good enough to submit Overeem five years ago, if that means anything to you.) Most likely, Overeem will be able keep the fight standing and have his way with Werdum — but there’s always the chance that Fabricio could catch the jacked Dutchman. And since he’d triple your investment, it’s worth a modest bet.
The Good ‘Dogs: A lot of them, actually — this is definitely a card that encourages risk. Besides the main event, you have Jeff Monson as a more-than-3-to-1 underdog against Daniel Cormier. Cormier is undefeated, and always impressive in his fights, but he’s a baby in the sport, and he’s never faced anybody even remotely close to Monson’s level of skill and experience. (Stupid fact: In the Snowman’s 53-fight career, he’s earned the same number of wins via north/south choke [7] as Cormier has total fights on his record.) The line is a little inflated, is what I’m saying.
Similarly, the well-traveled Valentijn Overeem is a slight underdog against rising prospect Chad Griggs, when I’d put Alistair’s bro as a slight favorite. But the opposite is true in Cavalcante vs. Wilcox. Despite JZ’s previous history of top-ten-ranked excellence, he’s really struggled to make an impact in the last three years, while Wilcox has been on a tear. Cash on the Silverback could pay off.
Keep Away: Josh Barnett as a 3-1 fave over Brett Rogers sounds about right to me; there’s not enough edge for a straight bet, so save him for the parlay. I also think KJ Noons makes sense as a solid favorite over Jorge Masvidal, but I’d like to see how Noons looks back at lightweight for at least one fight before I start putting money on him.
The Guy You’ve Never Heard Of:Magno Almeida is a 9-1 submission ace who has ended seven of his fights in the first round. Due to injuries and bad matchups, his opponent Conor Heun hasn’t won a fight in nearly three years, and hasn’t been inside the cage since losing a decision to KJ Noons last June. Give the new kid a shot.
Official CagePotato Parlay #1 (novice): $10 on A. Overeem + Barnett + Wilcox + Almeida returns a $46.48 profit at BetUS.
Official CagePotato Parlay #2 (advanced): $10 on Werdum + Barnett + V. Overeem + Monson + Noons returns a $589.63 profit.
(I’m only giving this face-off a 6 out of 10, since Velasquez didn’t have his championship belt with him, and his teammates weren’t in the background throwing middle-fingers at the crowd. Props: UFC.com)
With Cain Velasquez‘s shoulder injury taking him out of action for all of 2011 (so far), Junior Dos Santos was forced to keep busy with a coaching gig on The Ultimate Fighter and a #1 contender fight against Brock Lesnar Shane Carwin. Any number of misfortunes could have befallen Cigano in the interim, but he managed to keep his spot at the front of the line, and will face Velasquez later this year in the heavyweight title fight that should have happened all along. (By the way, Velasquez’s return on October 8th in Houston isn’t guaranteed yet, due to his health status.)

The line is so close that you won’t get rich betting on Velasquez even though he’s technically the underdog. (For the unfamiliar, those “-” numbers are the amount of dollars you’d have to risk to bring home a $100 profit.) But it says a lot about the perception of where these guys stand in relation to each other. The champion has been out of sight, and thus, out of mind. And again, Dos Santos’s wrestling defense and late slam-takedowns against Carwin demonstrated that he’s more than just a pair of hands, and can beat a wrestler at his own game. Will Velasquez still be able to threaten JDS in that area? Because I’d give the striking edge to Dos Santos, easily.

In this case, that’s value.

Immediately after his hand was raised in the Octagon, this past Saturday night at UFC 126, Jon Jones was told he would be receiving the Light Heavyweight title-shot in just six weeks against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. The news brought Jones to his knees and he accepted the challenge with huge excitement and appreciation after hearing his Jackson’s Submission Fighting teammate, Rashad Evans had to pull out of the title-tilt due to a knee injury. Jones is not deterred from taking this fight, as he manhandled Ryan Bader through two rounds before choking him out with 40 seconds left in the second and seems to have barely endured a scratch, plus he says he’s already in fighting shape. His only concern is to not over-train.
Within minutes of the fight announcement, tickets sales for the UFC 128 bout in New Jersey, (neighboring state to Jones’ home state of New York) were reportedly skyrocketing. And now the betting lines are showing Jones as the favorite by as much as -215.
It’s not that surprising seeing as Shogun hasn’t fought since last May. And though he took the title from Lyoto Machida with an impressive KO in the first round, it has been over 10 months since we’ve seen him inside the Octagon, which almost makes him out of sight, out of mind. Currently all hype is squarely on Jon Jones who appears to be the biggest rising star in the UFC. However, with all the new attention this bout will be getting in the coming weeks leading up to the March 19th Main Event, we expect we’ll see a lot of movement on these lines, so if you think Rua’s experience can beat Jones’ youth then take advantage of his underdog value now which is as much as +175.
