Derek Brunson

Derek Brunson has halted the surge of the #10 ranked, Kevin Holland — wrestling his way to six successful takedowns on his way to an impressive unanimous decision victory over five rounds.

Seizing on an early slip from Holland, Brunson landed a right hand, creating a scramble with the latter assuming full-guard. Dominant from the guard, Brunson managed to score a couple of ground strikes, with the North Carolina native landing with some significant power. Exchanging some words with Brunson from the bottom, Holland gave up the first round, in rather one-sided fashion.

Exchanging some words with the recently retired, Khabib Nurmagomedov who was sitting Octagon-side, Holland managed to wobble Brunson with some strikes, before the latter caught a kick and secured a second takedown. Threatening with an arm-triangle during a scramble, Brunson lost the position with a composed Holland controlling his breathing before scrambling back to his feet.

Dropping another takedown in the opening minute of the third round, Holland created another scramble after an armbar attempt, however, Brunson capitalized and assumed full guard again.

Scoring yet another takedown, Brunson, who appeared quite laboured between rounds, managed to lodge a fifth successful takedown.

Managing a takedown of his own in the first two minutes of the fifth and final round, Holland had Brunson on his back for the first time tonight. Returning to his feet, Brunson shot successfully with his sixth takedown of the night, putting Holland’s back to the Octagon fence yet again. Unanimous decision win in the book for the now four-fight streaking Brunson.

Grant Dawson has just turned in the second latest stoppage in the history of three round fights in the UFC. Landing a series of bludgeoning hammer-fists from the top against Leonardo Santos, Dawson turned in a 4:59 knockout stoppage to halt the Brazilian, leaving the judges out of the equation.

Making his divisional debut against Brazil’s Santos, Dawson improved to an eye-catching 17-1 professional, nabbing his seventh straight success to boot.

With the scorecards close to the consensus before the buzzer to signal the end of the third round and the bout as a whole, Dawson ultimately was leading the scoring on two of the three judges’ cards regardless, however, those scores weren’t needed with the 27-year-old Nebraska native securing a massive buzzer-beating stoppage.

Below, catch the highlights from Dawson’s massive finish over Santos.

Alexander Volkanovski

Defending UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has been forced to withdraw from the attempted defence of his championship next weekend against the number-one ranked contender, Brian Ortega due to COVID-19 protocols.

Set to feature as the opening title clash of a championship doubleheader next weekend at the UFC Apex, protocols amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic has forced the City Kickboxing mainstay to withdraw from the co-main event tilt per the promotion’s broadcast team at UFC Vegas 22 tonight.

The removal of Volkanovski follows news prior today regarding tonight’s co-headlining matchup between the would-be returning, Gregor Gillespie and the Australian’s teammate, Brad Riddell — with that pairing also shelved from tonight’s card amid COVID-19 protocols.

Per the broadcast team of play-by-play commentator, Brendan Fitzgerald, UFC lightweight contender, Paul Felder, and former middleweight champion, Hall of Famer, Michael Bisping, the clash will be rescheduled for another event, with Ortega removed from the entire card as a result.

Scoring his first defence of the featherweight championship at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’ in July, Volkanovski secured a close, split-decision victory over former titleholder, Max Holloway in a co-main event rematch.

The victory for Volkanovski came as his second over Holloway following his crowning outing at UFC 245 in December of 2019. The 32-year-old also holds a knockout win over multiple-time title challenger, Chad Mendes and a unanimous decision win over former featherweight gold holder, Jose Aldo.

For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Ortega, the Californian returned from an almost two-year layoff in October at UFC Fight Island 6 in Abu Dhabi, UAE — in spectacular fashion via a largely one-sided unanimous judging victory over fellow one-time championship chaser, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung.

Renowned finisher, Ortega added Jung to an eye-catching UFC resume, which features victories over former lightweight titleholder, Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, Clay Guida, Diego Brandao, and Renato Moicano.

Ortega’s sole Octagon loss came at UFC 231 in December of 2018 when he dropped a one-sided unanimous decision defeat to common-foe, Holloway in his first attempted title challenge under the promotion’s banner.

Taking main event honours next weekend from Las Vegas, Nevada, a heavyweight championship rematch between reigning division kingpin, Stipe Miocic and surging bruiser, Francis Ngannou.

Taking main event honours at tonight’s Fight Night event from the UFC Apex facility, a middleweight matchup with potentially top-five implications for the victor as division mainstay, Derek Brunson draws the charismatic, surging striker, Kevin Holland over five sanctioned rounds.

Attempting to lodge his fourth consecutive victory, North Carolina native, Brunson knocked back the surging Dana White‘s Contender Series alum, Edmen Shahbazyan in a short notice main event last August — finishing the Glendale Fight Club striker with a third round knockout. The victory came as the #7 ranked contender’s third on the trot, following a pair of unanimous jugding triumphs over both Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou.

Sitting at #10 in the official 185-pound pile, Californian finisher, Holland set a record in 2020 for the most wins for a middleweight in a calendar year, with a staggering five straight wins.

Most recently featuring in a short-notice UFC 256 appearance against common-opposition, Ronaldo Souza in December, the Travis Lutter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt managed a stunning, innovative knockout victory over the grappling sensation — from his back. The victory following prior wins over Charlie Ontiveros, Darren Stewart, Joaquin Buckley, and Anthony Hernandez.

Leon Edwards Claims He Beats Belal Muhammad ‘Ten Times Out Of Ten’

Leon Edwards

Despite the controversial ending to their UFC Vegas 21 headliner last weekend, welterweight contender, Leon Edwards has distanced himself from a potential rematch against Belal Muhammad, but claims if he was to meet the Chicago native again he’d beat him “ten times out of ten“.

Making his first Octagon appearance since UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in July of 2019, Birmingham native, Edwards started brightly, to say the least, snapping a stinging one-two in the opening round, before forcing a wobble and retreat from Muhammad via a whipping left high-kick around Muhammad’s guard.

Seeing the matchup called in the second round, Edwards landed an unintentional poke to Muhammad’s left eye for the second time of the night, this time, however, drawing a massive reaction from the #13 contender, who immediately fell to his back on the canvas, reeling in pain.

Consulting the Octagon-side physician, referee Herb Dean urged Muhammad to gather his composure, who was in extreme pain as he reeled — worrying explaining to the above-mentioned doctor that he couldn’t “see anything” from his left eye when questioned if he was experiencing double-vision — resulting in Dean’s decision to wave off the fight, declaring the bout a ‘No Contest’.

Immediately distancing himself from a potential re-run with Muhammad, Edwards surprisingly claimed that the result now meant “nine in a row” for him, and echoed prior calls throughout 2020 for a shot at welterweight champion, one-time foe, Kamaru Usman’s throne.

Speaking with UFC colour-commentator, Joe Rogan on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience — Edwards claimed that while Muhammad is a durable fighter if he was pitted with him ten times, he’d prevail each time.

He’s (Belal Muhammad) durable, he’s very durable,” Edwards said. “When I caught him with a head-kick in the first round — I kinda rushed my work a little bit, I kinda went wild and started swinging for him. But I should’ve picked my shots a little bit better. But he’s tough, he’s durable, but he doesn’t beat me. Any given day, I believe, if we fight ten times I beat him ten times, that’s just it.

He was a late step-in, Khamzat (Chimaev) stepped out, and I think he should work his way back up. And then hopefully we can meet somewhere down the line, but for now, I’m looking for the title shot, I’m looking to become a world champion.

Despite calls for a shot at welterweight gold in his next outing, the promotion has already booked an undisputed championship rematch between the above mentioned, Usman and BMF champion, Edwards’ rival, Jorge Masvidal to take main event honours at UFC 261 in Jacksonville, Florida on April 24

Whilst initially refusing to do “charity” for Edwards by accepting a short-notice matchup with him for last weekend, former interim champion, Colby Covington has claimed that a matchup between the two can be possible in the future if the UFC compensate him sufficiently.
