Chan Sung Jung Wins Submission of the Night with “Twister”

Okay, so granted, the feature attractions for last night’s UFC Fight Night card in Seattle probably didn’t wear out the edges of many seats, as both Phil Davis and Anthony Johnson utilized their wrestling to score conservative wins over “Minotoro” Nogueira and Dan Hardy respectively. Not exactly thrilling stuff, but hey, sometimes ya gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Thankfully the undercard had several ‘holy eff’ moments, including, yup, Chan Sung Jung’s freakin awesome submission win over Leonard Garcia, which came via a “Twister.” How bad ass was that? Of course, “The Korean Zombie” won Submission of the Night and an extra 55 large for utilizing the rarely seen technique, which guess what? Apparently he learned by watching it on the world-wide-web thingy. In an interview posted up at MMA Weekly, Jung had this to say about his latest addition to the MMA highlight reel, hall of fame.

“Yes, it was something I actually saw a long time ago on the internet; it’s one of Eddie Bravo’s moves. It was something I practiced because it just looks fun, so I do it quite a bit in practice. I always told people that I was going to try it sometime in competition; that I wanted to do it in the UFC, and I was finally able to.”

We are all forever in your debt Mr. Jung. Looks like someone’s going to be moving a few more of those Korean Zombie t-shirts no?

UFC Fight Night 24 Fighters Earn $55K “Fight Night” Bonuses

UFC President Dana White handed out “Fight Night” bonuses to Chan Sung Jung (aka the “Korean Zombie”), Johny Hendricks, Michael McDonald and Edwin Figueroa for their work Saturday night as part of the UFC Fight Night 24 event.

Jung UFN 24_Tracy LeeUFC President Dana White handed out “Fight Night” bonuses to Chan Sung Jung (aka the “Korean Zombie”), Johny Hendricks, Michael McDonald and Edwin Figueroa for their work Saturday night as part of the UFC Fight Night 24 event.

Fighters earned $55,000 for their performances with the “Submission of the Night” going to Jung, the “Knockout of the Night” to Johny Hendricks, and “Fight of the Night” to McDonald and Figueroa.

UFC Fight Night 24 (aka UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis) took place at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington. The main card aired on Spike TV, while five preliminary bouts were streamed live on the internet on the promotions Facebook page.

The event set a record for “UFC Fight Night” events in both gate revenue and attendance. The Seattle event brought in a live gate of $1,182,850, with a reported 14,212 fans in attendance. The next highest attendance for a “Fight Night” event was UFC Fight Night 18 which took place in Nashville, Tennessee back in April 2009. That event drew an attendance of 10,267 with a live gate of $626,077.

The “Korean Zombie” faced Leonard Garcia in a rematch of their “Fight of the Year” bout from last April. Both fighters seemed to have learned something from the last fight and were more technical, but it was Jung who used a Twister submission to end the fight with one second left on the clock in the second round. The Korean became the first fighter to successfully use the submission at a UFC event and was probably a big factor in securing the “Submission of the Night” bonus.

Hendricks took little time in stopping his opponent, T.J. Waldburger, by ending the fight at 1:35 of the first round by TKO. Unfortunately for fans, the bout was not replayed during the Spike TV broadcast.

Luckily, fans got to see McDonald and Figueroa slug it out for three rounds via the Facebook stream in the “Fight of the Night” winner. Figueroa took the fight less than two weeks ago after McDonald’s original opponent backed out due to injury. Both men pushed the pace for three rounds, but it was McDonald who got the better of his opponent, despite Figueroa’s ‘don’t quit’ attitude which prevented him from finishing the fight. McDonald would earn scores of 30-27 from all judges to win a unanimous decision.

“The New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni (13-13) set the tone for his next fight by walking into the Titan Fighting Championship 17 weigh-ins thirty minutes late. This will be his first fight since being released from the UFC, and in a recent interview with BloodyElbow.com, Baroni noted that it was “now or never” for him.

Baroni is set to meet Nick Nolte (3-2) on the live broadcast portion of the Titan FC debut card on HDNet. “The New York Bad Ass” is feeling the pressure of trying to succeed at the age of 34, against younger opponents and is looking to put together one last run to become a contender once again.

“Time is of the essence. It’s now or never. I have to stay in shape, be ready and fight as often as possible. I love doing this and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing. I see the writing on the wall. It’s really now or never. I want to keep doing this and I want to be successful at it. I always said it’s better to burn out than fade away, so I don’t want to just fade away. I want to burn out, I want to get another run with a bunch of fights and be a contender again…”

“I feel great right now. I see Dan Henderson looking the best he’s ever looked at 40 and it inspires me. I want to keep going. There’s nothing I’d rather do. I love to train and I love to fight. I love to perform and I love everything that goes along with the sport. I want to do it as long as I can. I’m hoping I can do it as long as Dan Henderson and that’s six years from now and that’s a long time.”

Titan FC 17 takes place at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas and airs on HDNet live beginning at 10PM EST (7PM PST). Also featured on the card is former WWE star Bobby Lashley, who meets Bellator vet John Ott, and former “TUF 10″ alumni Abe Wagner.
