It was announced today that due to his pesky thumb injury which requires necessary rehab, Rashad Evans was forced to pull out of a title-shot with Jon Jones and thus, Lyoto Machida has stepped in as the new UFC Light Heavyweight champion contender at UFC 140. And with the announcement came the early lines drawn for Jones vs. Machida with oddsmakers  placing Jones as a *reasonable (-375) favorite to Machida as a (+275) long shot. I say reasonable because Jones went as high as a (-700) favorite in his recent fight against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Are the odds pretty good here from a betting stand point? They are if you consider Machida’s last win was against Randy Couture back in April at UFC 129 with a kick that sealed his retirement. But before that he lost to the two opponents Jones beat to earn and retain the UFC Light Heavyweight title (Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Granted that crane like Karate Kid style kick Machida landed on Couture was an epic moment in UFC history (and apparently we can thank Steven Seagal for it) but considering that Randy was a 47 year old fighter planning for his own retirement,  it’s not really enough to make us open our wallets and lay down the dog money for Machida on this fight with Jones.

If you do plan on betting Jon Jones, you should do it now, as the odds gap is bound to widen, at least nearing a (-500) in Jones’ favor.

Should Frank Mir be the Betting Favorite Over Big Nog?

Early betting lines are out for UFC 140‘s Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira II and Mir is the odds on favorite at a whopping (-255), while “Big Nog” is set at (+205). That’s a good value to lay cash down on Nog in these early betting stages, but should he be the underdog?

Nog has just enjoyed the biggest coup of his career by knocking out the much younger much more odds on favorite, Brendan Schaub in the first round of his hometown UFC Rio co-main event. Yes, Nog did lose to Mir in their first match up at UFC 92 in December of 08, but Nog had suffered a staph infection days before which hospitalized him for 5 days and he incurred a knee injury during that very training camp, which required surgery a few months later.

Frank Mir delivered a second round knock out to Big Nog in that UFC 92 fight, which was the first ever KO loss of Nog’s career, but since then Mir has been plagued with a mix of losses and *”lackluster” (*Dana White‘s word) wins.

Both fighters deserve a tremendous amount of respect for where their careers stand at their mature ages in the fight game so perhaps, the betting field should be a little more even going into this one. Regardless, those who feel there is a definite resurgence in Nog’s game and it wasn’t just a hometown-inspired-fluke-victory over Schaub, should take advantage of the big underdog value in Big Nog now.

Wanderlei Silva is a -200 Favorite Over Chris Leben at UFC 132

Betting lines are showing Wanderlei Silva as a clear favorite by as much as (-200) to the underdog, Chris Leben at (+160). Part of the reason the odds are cast so much in Silva’s favor.

Betting lines are showing Wanderlei Silva as a clear favorite by as much as (-200) to the underdog, Chris Leben at (+160). Part of the reason the odds are cast so much in Silva’s favor may be due to his immense popularity and another part may be from his clear Unanimous Decision win over Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in February of 2010. But Bisping has since gone on to a 3 fight win streak and is the current TUF 14 coach alongside Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Since that February 2010 fight, Silva has been sidelined with injuries including breaking three ribs during training camp and and knee surgery.

Chris Leben suffered a huge 1st round TKO loss to Brian Stann this past January at UFC 125, but prior to the Stann fight, Leben was on a bit of a tear with wins including a huge triangle choke victory over Yoshihiro Akiyama. It’s hard to believe Leben is this much of a dog going into this fight, but it could be to Leben fan’s advantage. Leben is a good bet as long as he isn’t under any influences.

Betting Lines Show Cain Velasquez a Favorite Over Junior dos Santos

According to Ariel Helwani, early betting lines showed the next Heavyweight title-shot contender, Junior dos Santos to be the favorite going into his (possibly UFC 136) bout against, current champion, Cain Velasquez. But, it looks.

According to Ariel Helwani, early betting lines showed the next Heavyweight title-shot contender, Junior dos Santos to be the favorite going into his (possibly UFC 136) bout against, current champion, Cain Velasquez. But, it looks like the tides changed quickly and Velasquez is now the favorite by as much as (160) with dos Santos the (+130) underdog.

dos Santos had been expected to fight Velasquez for the title months ago, but Velasquez suffered a shoulder injury which sidelined their fight and dos Santos took the TUF 13 coaching stint against Brock Lesnar instead. Having trained for months, expecting to face Lesnar, dos Santos was dealt another surprise when Lesnar suffered a repeat bout with diverticulitis which left Shane Carwin as his replacement at UFC 131. dos Santos gave Carwin a solid beating and will now hopefully take his rightful place at the front of the Heavyweight line to meet Velasquez inside the Octagon. We expect lots of line movement in the next few months leading up to this likely October fight. So if you’d like to take advantage of dos Santos as the dog, head here now.

The betting lines for The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale: Guida Vs. Pettis fight have been released and are showing Anthony Pettis as a (-165) favorite with Clay Guida as a (+135) dog.

The famous “Showtime Kick” undoubtedly has impressed the line-makers over Guida’s latest 3 submissions win streak including his January 1st fight against Takanori Gomi, who Guida choked out in the second round. Pettis became nationally recognized with a Matrix-like kick that sealed him the WEC Championship belt, coming into the UFC. Pettis is currently on a 4 fight win streak, that Gray Maynard has dismissed by saying that save for Ben Henderson, Pettis has fought “scrubs.” This will be Pettis’ first fight in the UFC.
