“On behalf of Steven Seagal and Tommy Lee Jones, welcome to Under Siege 3” – that, my friends, is how you start a fight card.

Barry Oglesby put together a testosterone-frenzied card for last night’s event from Colmcille’s GAA club…with only two of the nine bouts going to decision.

Fighting under a new team banner for the first time, Oglesby’s Kyuzo made a good account of themselves despite coming out with only one victory from their five fights.

It was two victories in two bouts for Galway’s Point Blank Submissions and Rush Fight Academy, with the teams outstanding performances coming from debutant Gary Mannion (PBS) and the unbeaten Darragh Harte (Rush).

Lucan MMA had a particularly bad day, leaving without a single “W” from their five scheduled bouts. A complete mismatch in the middleweight division left the audience wondering how the Lucan coach let one of his men get into the cage at all.

It’s probably safe to assume that Bellator Fighting Championships will never soar to the heights of the promotional powerhouse known as the UFC. Between a meager advertisement campaign and being locked into a deal with MTV2, Bellator’s chances of expansion even seem limited.

However, don’t let that fool you as to the talent this fledgling promotion totes; there are some insanely talented and marketable fighters on the Bellator roster.

Should we expect overnight stardom for these unheralded warriors? No, we shouldn’t, but given a few more fights, some more exposure and the appropriate time to develop, we may see the birth of some bona fide celebrities.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion, Ricco Rodriguez, was recently apprehended for allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting a cab driver in an affluent Phoenix suburb.

Rodriguez and his female companion hired taxicab service to drive them to a popular sports bar in the area.  When the cab fare calculated to $75, the 33-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter was only willing to pay $20, as explained by Myfoxphoenix.com.

According to the Phoenix police, it wasn’t until Ricco’s companion was willing to pay the remainder, an argument ensued between the driver and the heavyweight fighter, in which the cab driver promptly called 911.  The former champ then proceeded to grab the man and throw him to the ground.

At 6’4” and over 220 pounds, it took three of Phoenix’s finest to subdue the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, injuring one of them.

“It’s our policy to handcuff behind, that did not occur.  He was struggling with the officers, flailing his arms… one of the officers was pushed against the wall, and we believe at that point he sustained a minor injury or cut to his elbow,” says Sgt. Steve Martos.

The San Jose-born fighter is now facing charges of assault and resisting arrest.

Ricco has seen his share of problems in the past, as he once tested positive for marijuana and cocaine and was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). Plus, he appeared on season one of the VH1 reality television show, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

Rodriguez’ last MMA bout was a unanimous decision win over The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant, James McSweeney, on February 26, 2011.  He is also currently on an 11-fight win streak.

Chael Sonnen’s Suspension Corrected: Suspension Ends on June 29, 2011

One day after claiming that Chael Sonnen would be unable to apply for a new license to fight in the state of California until May 18, 2012, the California State Athletic Commission has claimed they made an error in their ruling.  According to a press release from the CSAC, Sonnen will be free to apply for licensure after his California license expires on June 29, 2011.

Lowkick.com reports the press release as stating:

Upon reviewing the May 18, 2011 decision of the Commission, an error in the applicability of Rule 399 was made. The rule states that, “Any applicant who has been denied an application for a license may not file a similar application until one year from the date of the last previous denial by the commission. Any application filed within the one year period may be denied without the necessity of a hearing. Anyone who has had his license revoked may not petition for reinstatement or apply for a new license until one year after the date of such revocation. Any petition for reinstatement filed within the one year period may be denied without the necessity of a hearing.” Since the Commission did not revoke or deny Mr. Sonnen’s license, the rule does not apply.

Given that Mr. Sonnen’s license will expire on June 29, 2011, the suspension imposed upon the license will be extinguished by operation of law. Therefore, Mr. Sonnen may reapply for a license at any time following that date.

This is big news for Sonnen. If he applies for a new license and the CSAC grants that license it would not be a surprise to see his name on a late summer or early fall UFC card.

ESPN’s Josh Gross was at Sonnen’s hearing on Wednesday and tweeted: “Sonnen said UFC would give him a job 18 days from now. ‘A once in a lifetime opportunity to be a coach on The Ultimate Fighter.'”

Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer told MMAJunkie.com that the NSAC would honor the California suspension, so it is unclear if the coaching job on The Ultimate Fighter will remain a possibility for Sonnen when and if he is approved by the NSAC.

There is also no guarantee that the CSAC will approve his application. The CSAC press release states, Sonnen will be required to “appear at a Commission meeting to have his application considered. If the Commission denies his application, Mr. Sonnen will have to wait one year from the date of the denial.”

Bellator 45 will be taking place Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Lake Charles, LA.

This is a very solid card and will feature the featherweight and light geavyweight tournament finals. In the featherweight finals we will see Daniel Straus vs. Patricio Freire, in what will be a very explosive matchup.

In the light heavyweight final we will see Richard Hale vs. Christian M’Pumbu.

Patricio Freire is a very explosive fighter. He is 16-1 with his lone loss coming to Joe Warren via split decision. Daniel Straus is 14-3 and has really come from under the radar. He has won 12 fights in a row, and now has the chance to fight for the Bellator featherweight title with a win over the “Pitbull” Saturday night.

The style matchup truly favors Straus coming into this match. He is the type of fighter that is more known for taking you to the distance, while Freire is explosive and can end the fight at any given moment.

Expect both fighters to be pushed to the limit. Freire could pull off the win, and in many eyes should but I am leaning towards Straus to win this fight via Unanimous decision.

In the light heavyweight final, Richard Hale has a 17-3-1 record and won a controversial split decision in his last bout over DJ Linderman. He is very well-rounded and can pull out a victory from every angle.

Christian M’Pumbu is also 17-3-1 it is funny because they both have the same amount of submission, knock out and decision victories.

I expect a fight where neither man holds back. I personally think that M’Pumbu has the slight advantage, but you never know, because it’s MMA and anything is possible.

I say it starts close and end of the second or early third round M’Pumbu catches him and finishes the fight via TKO.

Overall the event will be a solid card that is definitely worth the watch. So check it out on MTV2.
