While featherweight champion Conor McGregor is gearing up to challenge lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of November 12’s UFC 205 from New York, Nate Diaz’s fighting future is currently unclear.

Diaz and McGregor squared off in their highly anticipated rematch at August 20’s UFC 202 with McGregor winning the bout by majority decision after suffering a shocking submission loss to the Stockton native in their first bout last March at UFC 196. Given the fact that the two rivals have split wins and losses, a trilogy bout seems likely down the road, and Diaz has made it clear that that’s what he has his eyes set on.

The “Notorious” one, however, says a trilogy bout ‘wouldn’t end good’ for Diaz, although he is open to the possibility potentially for the 155-pound title he plans to win next month:

“I think potentially so. The more I think about it Nate is going to be… There was a lot of damage done to Nathan in that last fight. You know looking at his face it just didn’t look the same. I know those close to him will understand what I am talking about. So there could be a potential fight maybe down the line for the lightweight belt after I win this one. To see him have to make the weight. And then to see the damage that he took in the last fight and then come in at a much lower weight.. It wouldn’t end good for him. So I’d imagine and I would probably hope that his people close to him would stop him from doing it. It’s done now. Cash your money and bounce,” McGregor told The LAD Bible.

Diaz is currently ranked No. 4 in the lightweight division, and given his history with McGregor, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two booked again if McGregor gets by Alvarez.

Would you like to see a rubber match take place?

UFC lightweight/welterweight contender Donald Cerrone had a great night at UFC 202. Taking to the octagon for the third time in the 170-pound division, ‘Cowboy’ faced hard-nosed wrestler Rick Story on the evening’s main card. Cerrone earned his third straight victory with a vintage second round TKO against ‘The Horror,’ eventually sealing the deal with a head kick and flurries of punches.

The win earned Cerrone his fifth performance of the night bonus under the UFC banner. It was a great way to start his future with the new owners of the promotion, and might well lead to a UFC 205 title shot against Eddie Alvarez. Although a lightweight title shot from a welterweight win is somewhat unorthodox, the main event at UFC 202 is proof that ‘money weight’ fights now rule the roost.

Thoughts on McGregor vs. Diaz

The UFC 202 main event featured two men that Cerrone is all too familiar with. Nate Diaz dominated ‘Cowboy’ back at UFC 141 and, although he’s never fought Conor McGregor, the two have shared a rivalry wince the infamous ‘GO BIG’ presser. As captured by our good friends at Submission Radio, Cerrone was disappointed that ‘The Notorious’ topped Diaz in Vegas:

“I feel like wrestling is really the gap in Nate (Diaz’s) game. If he had taken Conor (McGregor) down I feel like he could have secured victory in this fight. I don’t know what Nate was doing, when he goes out there and boxes he really dominates. I think the kicking took him off his game maybe, I don’t know.

“I was back there hooting and hollering for Nate man like ‘Come on man, f*cking get him. I was upset, I was really pulling for him. Now I got to listen to this f*cking dude talking all the f*cking time again. The king is back? F*ck it.”

What’s next for Cerrone?

As mentioned, and especially for a guy with so many fights and wins, anything is possible. If not a lightweight title fight, where and who should Donald Cerrone fight next?donald-cerrone-rick-story-ufc-202-1[1]

In the aftermath of Nate Diaz’s shocking submission victory over featherweight champion Conor McGregor at March’s UFC 196, the UFC quickly booked the rematch between the two stars for July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – and then the McGregor madness took over the MMA world.

After momentarily ‘retiring’, the “Notorious” one was pulled from UFC 200 and the rematch was scrapped. The UFC had claimed that the Irishman decided not to attend a press conference in Las Vegas leading up to the bout and for that reason, the promotion had no choice but to pull him from the card.

Eventually, after a whirlwind of chaos, all parties were able to come to an agreement, and Diaz vs. McGregor II was recently scheduled to headline August 20’s UFC 202 in Las Vegas. With that being said, it was very odd to see Diaz take to his official Instagram account earlier tonight (June 20, 2016) and say that he and McGregor would be fighting at UFC 200.

The Stockton native claimed that he would be coming to get his ‘show money’, however, he quickly edited the caption to say that he was ‘not fighting’ at the event after causing an uproar among fans:

See uguys at #ufc200 going to get that showmoney #itstime #100 ??????????????

Despite the initial surprise, it appears as if we have yet another classic Diaz prank on our hands, but could he still be receiving his money for the event?

Well, it looks as if the highly-anticipated rematch between Nate Diaz and reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor may be further away from a reality than we had previously thought.

The two were originally set to rematch at July 9’s UFC 200, but McGregor was scrapped from the card after refusing to attend a promotional press conference in Las Vegas. There have since been rumors indicating that the second meeting could take place at August’s UFC 202.

According to UFC President Dana White, however, who appeared on today’s (June 6, 2016) edition of The Herd, Diaz is looking for a new and improved contract after his monstrous submission victory over McGregor last March at UFC 196.

White, however, admitted that Diaz already has a set contract with the promotion and that he’s now essentially ‘trying to blow up the deal’:

“What you try to do in a deal like this is you try to be as fair as you can be. Obviously the problem is we already have a deal — we have a deal. He has a contract. Conor has a deal,” White said. “He’s never come back and tried to renegotiate a contract. Ever.

“Nate, we signed a new deal going into that fight, then he signed the contract for UFC 200 and then Conor doesn’t show up for 200 so now Nate’s trying to blow up the deal. It’s frustrating but that’s the business that we’re in. This is what we do. Everybody’s not going to be happy all the time so now our job is, Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I, have to sit down and try to figure out how to make this deal work and we’ve been going back and forth trying to make this fight happen but the problem is timing. Now we’re running out of time.”

As White mentioned, time is certainly running out regarding UFC 202, and at the end of the day, the promotion may just need to move on:

“This fight’s supposed to be August 20 or something like that — I’ve already got September 20 done. I got that card made, it’s done and now we’re moving onto the next one,” White said. “So we’re going to get to a point here where we’re going to run out of time and we’re just not going to be able to make the fight. So Conor’s either going to have to pick a new opponent that he would like to fight or lose that date.”

The UFC boss admitted that Diaz’s star power has risen tremendously, and that he’s one of the millions of people who would like to see the fight happen.

If the UFC cannot reach an agreement for Diaz – McGregor II, however, the Irishman will indeed be booked against another opponent while Diaz’s future remains unclear. White listed off a few options for McGregor, and you may be surprised to see 155-pound boss Rafael dos Anjos on the list:

“The reality is since that Conor McGregor fight, obviously when you win a fight of that magnitude, it has definitely rubbed off on Nate. People do want to see Nate fight, people do want to see this fight again, and I’m one of those guys I want to make the fight the people want to see. I believe people want to see this fight.”

“But people want to see Conor McGregor fight Frankie Edgar or Jose Aldo again, too. I’m sure they’d want to see him fight Rafael dos Anjos at 155 for that title. So there’s a lot of fights out there for Conor if we can’t get this Nate fight done.”

McGregor was scheduled to fight dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight strap at UFC 196, but RDA was forced to withdraw with an injury, leading Diaz to accept the bout on short notice.

While a matchup between dos Anjos and McGregor would be intriguing, the Brazilian is scheduled to defend his title next month against Eddie Alvarez, meaning a bout between he and the Irishman would most likely take place near the end of 2016 at the earliest, putting McGregor’s title on hold for a year.

In my opinion, it has to be Diaz or a title defense for McGregor next.

What are your thoughts?

The UFC Just Needs To Pay Nate Diaz

In the last few days, UFC President Dana White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertita have met with both Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz likely in hopes of coming to an agreement for their highly anticipated rematch that was originally scheduled for July 9’s UFC 200.

According to McGregor, it seems as if his meeting with the UFC brass went well, and that both parties were able to put their differences aside.

With Diaz, however, it appears to be a different story, as it so very often is with a Diaz brother.

White, while not going into too much detail, described the situation to MMAJunkie yesterday (May 20, 2016):

“I didn’t have a good day in Stockton.”

Despite not having all of the facts, one would have to assume that Diaz and the UFC brass hit a roadblock when talks of money came up.

The younger Diaz brother has had his fair share of contract disputes with the promotion, and he’s always stated that he’s interested in only big fights and big money.

The key factor here, however, is that the Stockton native never really had too much leverage. In the eyes of White, Diaz didn’t necessarily “move the needle” despite being quite a popular name amongst the fans.

To the UFC, Diaz likely appeared as a complaining fighter who seemed to talk more than he would fight, and one could argue that this theory was partly true.

Now, however, the roles have reversed, and the tides have changed. The ball is finally in Diaz’s court, and he finally has the leverage he’s been waiting so long for.

The former title challenger came in on less than two week’s notice and took out the sport’s biggest star in McGregor via submission at March’s UFC 196. He talked his head off, sold the fight, and deserves his credit for being part of one of the biggest events in mixed martial arts history.

Diaz undoubtedly became even bigger of a star after UFC 196, and fans want to see him fight now more than ever, and despite the criticism towards a Diaz vs. McGregor rematch, the fight would simply be massive.

The younger brother of MMA’s most polarizing duo has had a long, somewhat controversial, and interesting career to say the least.

He may have been out of line many times before regarding his demands from the UFC, but this one time, he may be right on point, and he’s made it clear what he wants: a rematch with the Irishman, and a boatload of cash.

It’s time that the UFC gives in, and pays Nate Diaz his money.

In case you missed it, we have a full breakdown of the biggest fights from UFC 196, including Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz & Miesha Tate vs. Holly Holm…

So UFC 196 is in the rear view, and the mixed martial arts world collectively gets back to reality following one of the biggest events in modern history. It’s quite easy to forget that the original lightweight title fight between Rafael dos Anjos and Conor McGregor had been taken away, as the pay-per-view card rocked the foundations even without the full line up. Buoyed by a number of shocking upsets and highlight reel moments, UFC 196 delivered in a big way.

So let’s start with the co-main event of the evening, Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate for the UFC women’s bantamweight title. Holm was hoping to embark on a long run as champion following her crushing upset over Ronda Rousey last year, and her first defense against Miesha Tate would prove to be pivotal in making this dream a reality. Unfortunately for ‘The Preacher’s Daughter,’ Tate was a different beast than we’ve ever seen, and came to win.

holm-tate-fight%20(23)[1]

Up until round five, this was a very tentative fight, with neither woman appearing willing to play their entire hand. But Tate was clearly planning Holm’s demise, and it was an ugly one at that. She’d been kept at arm’s length for four rounds, but ‘Cupcake’ never gave up trying. Perhaps she planned for the fifth round finish, or maybe it was her persistence that led to the eventual opening, either way it was one of the craziest final moments in a fight to watch live.

As Miesha Tate took the back of Holly Holm, there was a sense that this was the moment the belt would change hands yet again. From the standing position ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ attempted to flip Tate over, but it didn’t work, in fact it exposed Holm’s position even further, and Tate clamped on with the rear naked choke. Holm appeared to remain calm, but ‘Cupcake’ already had the choke secured under the chin, with her left hand firmly grasping the back of the now former champion’s head, and her right hand locked in place on her own bicep.

USATSI_9161309_168380322_lowres-640x458[1]

It looked as though Holm was ready to tap, and almost did, but it turned out to be the movements of an unconscious and now fallen champion. Tate and her team were elated, but we witnessed one of the most humble and down to earth champions fall from grace in the UFC 196 co-main event. It was a sobering moment to say the least, but such is life in the fight game. The key to Tate getting past Holm was an excellent mix of head movement and unpredictable footwork, and dogged determination.

Now, on to one of the most brash and outspoken characters in MMA history.
