A pair of light heavyweights badly in need of a win will meet at UFC 139 in November.
Ryan Bader and Jason Brilz, each with two-fight losing streaks for the first time in their careers, have agreed to a fight on the UFC‘s Nov. 19 pay-per-view in San Jose, Calif. The promotion announced the fight Tuesday night on its official website.
The UFC 139 card, which is quickly starting to fill up with several recent fight announcements, features a main event heavyweight title fight between San Jose-based champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.
Bader (12-2, 5-2 UFC) started his UFC career 5-0, and his MMA career 12-0, including the title of Season 8 champion of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State then began a methodical climb up the light heavyweight rankings that culminated with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the co-main event of UFC 119 last September.
The win over Nogueira got Bader a fight against Jon Jones at UFC 126. But Jones was on his rapid ascension to the top of the 205-pound heap and submitted Bader in the second round. Jones got a quick title shot against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, which he won in dominating fashion. Bader had to regroup.
But against Tito Ortiz at UFC 132 last month, Bader fell victim to what has been the year’s biggest upset. Ortiz dropped Bader with a short right hand early in the first round, then moved in for a guillotine choke that forced Bader to tap. The win by Ortiz was his first since October 2006, saved his job in the UFC and made Bader the answer to an MMA trivia question, albeit on the wrong end.
Brilz (18-4-1, 3-3 UFC) saw his two-fight skid begin with a controversial split decision loss to Nogueira at UFC 114 in May 2010. That bout, which won Fight of the Night, had most in attendance, and many scoring the fight live, believing Brilz was the victim of bad judging.
After nearly a year off due to injury, Brilz returned at UFC 129 in Toronto to face Vladimir Matyushenko. He never had a chance to get started – Matyushenko knocked him out just 20 seconds into the first round.
Though he may get some leeway for the Nogueira fight, a loss to Bader would mean the former University of Nebraska-Omaha wrestler, and current assistant coach, would have just one win since March 2009.
UFC 139, though not yet officially announced by the promotion, will be its debut in San Jose, the former home base of one-time rival Strikeforce. The pay-per-view is expected to take place at the HP Pavilion.
Aside from the heavyweight championship in the main event, UFC 139 will also feature a bantamweight contenders bout between former champions Brian Bowles and Urijah Faber, a welterweight bout between Martin Kampmann and Rick Story and a light heavyweight bout between Stephan Bonnar and Kyle Kingsbury. In addition, though he does not yet have an opponent named, Josh Koscheck is expected to make his return at the event, and is planning on a move from welterweight to middleweight for the first time since his appearance on Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

In fact, if the UFC pulls it off, it could become the biggest MMA show of all-time.
According to several Brazilian newspapers, on Tuesday, Zuffa co-owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta met with Omar Aziz, the governor of Amazonas, and his deputy Jose Melo, among others. There, the group discussed a possible August 2012 date for the UFC that could nearly double the UFC’s previous record attendance.
According to the reports, the event would be held at Manaus’ Convention Center — popularly called “Sambódromo.” The sprawling, outdoor venue is over 400 meters long and can hold a capacity of over 100,000.
“The opportunity to realize the UFC in Manaus and bring home some of the great fighters who are from this region is something that makes us very excited,” Lorenzo Fertitta said.
To date, the largest crowd in UFC history is the 55,724 that filled Rogers Centre in Toronto for UFC 129. The all-time MMA attendance record is held by a joint PRIDE/K-1 promotion in 2002 that reportedly drew 91,107 fans to Tokyo National Stadium in Japan, though that number was never verified and largely believed to have been inflated.
Saturday’s UFC 134 will see 14,000 fans fill Rio’s HSBC Arena. The event sold out in just over an hour, and UFC officials have noted regret at not booking a larger venue. The Manaus show would potentially blow that show away, along with every other show UFC’s ever done.
Among the Zuffa-employed fighters with ties to Manaus are current featherweight champion Jose Aldo and current Strikeforce middleweight champ Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Loser…well, who knows anymore?

Meanwhile, beloved light-heavyweight vet Stephan Bonnar — who’s riding his first two-fight win streak since 2007 — will be matching his momentum against TUF 8 vet Kyle Kingsbury, who has won his last four, and is starting to look like a straight-up beast. Bonnar most recently out-scored Igor Pokrajac at the TUF 12 Finale in December, and was slated to face Karlos Vemola at UFC on Versus 5, but had to withdraw due to injury. Kingsbury is coming off his decision win over Fabio Maldonado at the TUF 13 Finale in June, where he showed off some nasty clinch-knees but ate a heap of body shots in the process.

Jason Reinhardt hoped to reinvigorate himself by dropping down to bantamweight for his last fight.
He may have done that, but his loss to Edwin Figueroa at UFC on Versus 5 10 days ago was enough for the promotion to hand him his walking papers. Sources close to Reinhardt told MMA Fighting on Tuesday that Reinhardt has been released by the UFC.
Reinhardt, who was the oldest active fighter in the UFC, was in his second stint with the promotion. All three of his career losses came in UFC fights.
Reinhardt (20-3, 0-3 UFC) first fought in the UFC at UFC 78 in November 2007. After starting his career 18-0 fighting mostly in his native Illinois, as well as Iowa and Indiana, Reinhardt was picked up by the UFC for a fight against Joe Lauzon. Lauzon submitted him just 1:14 into the first round.
After picking up two more wins on regional shows, Reinhardt again got the call from Zuffa, this time to fight Tiequan Zhang at WEC 51 in a lightweight fight on short notice. But he had to withdraw from the bout when he failed his eye exam.
Reinhardt got his shot at Zhang several months later at UFC 127 in February – with both he and Zhang dropping to featherweight for the fight. Zhang submitted him 48 seconds into the first round.
But despite another quick UFC loss, Reinhardt got another shot – and reportedly at the urging of matchmaker Joe Silva, dropped to bantamweight. Against Figueroa at UFC on Versus 5 earlier this month, Reinhardt heard the boo-birds when he circled around the outside of the cage for more than a minute without engaging, then taunted Figueroa to engage him and was seen telling him, “I can do this all night.” Once Figueroa caught him, Reinhardt needed to be saved by the bell in the first round. And in the second round, Figueroa ended things quickly with a TKO.
In Reinhardt’s three UFC fights, he competed in three weight classes for a total of just 7:52 in the Octagon. Reinhardt’s fight against Figueroa was just the third time in his career he had seen the second round. Eighteen of his 20 wins have been first-round stoppages, and he has 16 career submission wins. But his success outside the UFC – as what critics have called a can crusher – didn’t translate to success in the UFC.
Reinhardt recently began training in Las Vegas with Wanderlei Silva‘s Wand Fight Team, and he has said his plan is to move to Las Vegas permanently to continue training.
On his Facebook page, Reinhardt said he plans on getting back to the UFC: “I’m staying positive, recovering, and I will have my (butt) back in the gym ASAP,” Reinhardt said. “I love the UFC and how they treated me … All I have to do is win a couple fights in another organization and I will be back.”
