In the months leading up to his UFC 117 title challenge, Chael Sonnen had plenty to say. Sonnen seemed to be everywhere, talking up his potential to dethrone champion Anderson Silva in a middleweight championship match. More than 20 minutes into the fight, he was making good on his pre-fight boasting, seemingly on his way to a career-defining victory when Silva caught him with a fifth-round triangle/arm bar submission.

In the months since, Sonnen has had almost nothing to say publicly, his silence precipitated by a positive drug test in the days after the fight.

On Thursday in Sacramento, Calif., Sonnen will have his chance to defend himself from a California state athletic commission (CSAC) finding that he illegally used performance-enhancing steroids prior to the bout.

Over 100 pages of documents recently released by the CSAC give a clearer picture of the commission’s contention that Sonnen cheated.

If the name Cristiano Marcello rings a bell for MMA fans, it’s most likely because they know him as the former Chute Boxe coach who famously fought Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett in a surprisingly technical backstage brawl at a Pride event in 2005.

But in addition to his work as a trainer at Chute Boxe and now at his own gym, CM System, Marcello has also revitalized his own fighting career in 2010, and on Saturday he takes on Guido Canetti at Bitetti Combat 8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Below, Marcello talks with us via e-mail about his upcoming fight, the scrap that spawned his internet fame and his favorite memories from the Chute Boxe days.

When Gerald Harris was released by the UFC last week following his loss to Maiquel Falcao, a lot of his fans hoped he would resurface with Strikeforce.

However, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour that the organization isn’t interested in signing “Hurricane.”

“I talked to my guys about it, actually, they talked to me about it,” Coker said of signing Harris. “I watched the fight [against Falcao], I didn’t know how to judge it. Then they told me about his background and his past and things you are telling me now, that this guy is a tremendous athlete (who) has a ton of potential and just had bad showing or fought very cautious to try and win the fight.

“The only thing right now is we are really committed to the fighters we have under contract now and I want to make sure these guys get in the mix two or three next year. That doesn’t mean we can’t revisit with him, but for right now, I would say that I want to take care of the roster we currently have.”
