MMA fighter Alexandre Pereira da Silva is in critical condition at a Brazilian hospital a week after passing out while attempting to cut weight ahead of his debut during Shooto Brazil 80.

Brazilian MMA Athlete Commission COO Cristiano Sampaio confirmed the news Saturday to Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

“We heard about the incident on the day of the weigh-in, told by the leader of the team and the promoter of the event,” Sampaio said. “We went to the hospital to understand the case. The doctors still had no diagnosis of the exact cause. The athlete remains in critical condition in the hospital. We’re following the case closely.”

Cruz also translated comments Nova Uniao head coach Andre Pederneiras made to Spanish outlet Combate about the situation.

“According to the hospital doctors, his dehydration is not what caught their attention,” he said. “The report indicated ‘heat stroke,’ which is like his body got overheated, which is something rare, but happened.”

Sampaio noted Da Silva had yet to become officially eligible to compete since the athletic commission didn’t receive his final physical exam before learning of the hospitalization.

Pederneiras added Da Silva didn’t face a major weight cut ahead of his first professional fight. No further information was provided.

Da Silva was scheduled to take on Marcos Silva during Sunday’s event in Rio de Janeiro.

Dana White Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor’s Alleged Run-in with Irish Mob Is True

UFC President Dana White commented Wednesday on a report alleging UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor was involved in a pub brawl that included an Irish mob associate in Dublin, Ireland.

According to Steven Marrocco and John Morgan of MMA Junkie, White said he doesn’t believe the report due to a lack of mainstream media attention: “I don’t think it’s true, because if it were true, it would be big. Conor can walk down the street, and it’s big news now. If this was true, I would just have to believe it would be off-the-charts crazy.”

Ken Foy and Robin Schiller of the Irish Independent reported Tuesday that a “well-known Irish celebrity,” also referred to as a “sports star,” punched a man in his 50s linked to convicted drug dealer and Kinahan cartel member Graham “The Wig” Whelan.

While the report didn’t mention McGregor by name, Gareth Davies of the Daily Mail reported witnesses said on social media that McGregor was the celebrity involved.

While White isn’t buying the reports, he did offer his thoughts should they turn out to be true, saying, “Can’t be a good thing for Conor. … But I’m sure it can be worked out, too. [Boxing legend] Jake LaMotta’s brother beat the s–t out of a wise guy, too, and they figured it out.”

McGregor has been in the news often since his boxing debut and loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26.

Most notably, McGregor entered the cage at Bellator 187 in Dublin after he thought SBG Ireland teammate Charlie Ward had defeated John Redmond.

The fight hadn’t yet been called off by the official, however, and after referee Marc Goddard attempted to restore order, McGregor pushed him.

McGregor hasn’t competed for UFC since UFC 205 more than one year ago, and White told reporters Tuesday that McGregor “might never fight again.

Former mixed martial arts star Jason “Mayhem” Miller pleaded guilty in a domestic violence case, TMZ Sports reported Tuesday.

According to the report, authorities charged Miller with five felony counts of domestic violence and a felony count of vandalism. He reached a plea agreement with prosecutors that saw him plead guilty to “corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant,” and he received a three-year probation and a four-year suspended sentence in state prison.

Miller was 23-10 over an MMA career that included stints in UFC, Strikeforce and World Extreme Cagefighting. He also hosted the MTV show Bully Beatdown that ran from 2009 until 2012.

A jury in Orange County, California, previously acquitted Miller of felony domestic violence stemming from a 2013 incident in which prosecutors alleged he had struck his ex-girlfriend.

TMZ Sports reported his guilty plea Tuesday was connected to allegations he was violent with three different girlfriends between 2015 and 2017. He also allegedly damaged the cell phones of two girlfriends so they’d be unable to call the police, for which he was facing misdemeanor charges.
