Heavyweight veterans Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem faced off for a third time at this past weekend’s (July 8, 2017) UFC 213 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
They first fought at a Pride event in 2006 where Werdum scored a submission victory over “The Reem”. The rematch, which was won by Overeem, took place at a Strikeforce event in 2011, although it was a lackluster fight at best.
And the trilogy? Well, it wasn’t much better than the rematch. Werdum and Overeem battled it out for three rounds, although it was a rather uneventful affair. “Vai Cavalo” had Overeem hurt at one point, but he was unable to finish the fight, and ultimately ended up losing a somewhat controversial decision.
The former champion clearly wasn’t happy with the decision, and he now plans to appeal the loss:
“The athletic commission gives us a chance to appeal, so I want to see what happens,” Werdum told MMA Fighting. “I have the right to appeal because I don’t want this loss on my record. I’m sure I won because I won the first and the third rounds, and lost the second one.
“When I lose a fight I admit it, but this one… The crowd booed him, I received a lot of messages. Everyone saw I won. You saw my face after the fight, I couldn’t believe I lost. I was surprised.”
Not only will Werdum appeal the loss, but he wouldn’t mind fighting Overeem four a fourth time – as long it gets him closer to a title shot:
“A fourth fight would be good if I appeal and it doesn’t change the result,” Werdum said. “My goal is the belt, and if he’s on my way, I think it would be good to fight him a fourth time. I’d like to fight him a fourth time to show the reality, what really happened. I believe I won. If it’s worth it to fight a fourth time to get to what I want, the belt, that would be interesting, for him.
“I always say that a loss it three steps back and a win is one step forward, but the way it was, I think it was only one step back. I believe I won, but the official result was a loss. I have a loss in my record.”
Both Werdum and Overeem have lost to heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in recent memory, but the bout was still being labeled as a potential eliminator, although UFC President Dana White wasn’t too impressed with Overeem’s performance either.
Werdum is unlikely to win the appeal, but he still plans on fighting again this year:
“I want to fight again this year,” Werdum said. “I was away from a long time and I don’t like that. I’d like to fight at least three times a year, that would be the ideal. I’d like to fight again in November, so I have enough time to rest after the training camp, enjoy my family for a while, and do a few things scheduled outside the cage in Brazil.”
What do you suggest the UFC do with Werdum, Overeem, and the heavyweight title picture?

A boxing match between former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor could be happening ‘sooner than you think’, per a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
To add more fuel to the fire, Mayweather has reserved an August 26, 2017 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s event calendar.
“Mayweather Promotions will promote a professional boxing event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This event will be televised on Showtime.”
During the tail end of his career, “Money” typically fought at the MGM, making it a likely landing spot for a potential bout between him and the “Notorious” one.
It’s also important to note that the UFC does not have an event booked for that date.
In addition, this new bit of knowledge comes after a recent Instagram post made by McGregor, which the Irishman used to hint that ‘Something BIG is coming’:
A post shared by Conor McGregor Official (@thenotoriousmma) on
McGregor hasn’t competed since last November when he brutally knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Since then, he has been out of action due to the birth of his first child.
Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but said earlier this year that he was making a return to the ring to fight McGregor.
Do you expect this bout to be made official in the coming days?

Late last night (May 17, 2017), it was announced that Conor McGregor had struck a deal with the UFC in order to make his often discussed mega fight with the legendary Floyd Mayweather a reality.
“It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,” McGregor told TheMacLife.com.
“The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”
UFC President Dana White also confirmed the news:
“The McGregor side is done,” White said on TNT following game one of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. “I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now.”
“I’m not saying the fight will happen but I got one side done and it’s time to work on the other,” White added.
Today (May 18, 2017), it appears as if another crucial step has been taken in regards to making the fight, as McGregor has applied for a boxing license in the state of Nevada.
Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Bob Bennet confirmed the news to Boxing News Online:
“Conor McGregor has submitted an application to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a boxing license,” he said. “We are currently awaiting additional documents from him in support of his application.”
Late last year, McGregor was granted a boxing license in the state of California, which added more fuel to the fire regarding speculation that he may actually take on Mayweather in a boxing match. Mayweather, however, has spent the majority of his lengthy career competing in Las Vegas, making it a likely landing spot for a potential showdown between him and McGregor.
With McGregor and the UFC taking these recent steps, the ball most certainly seems to be in the court of the man dubbed “Money”. The 41-year-old undefeated Mayweather hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but revealed earlier this year that he was coming out of retirement solely for a bout with the brash and outspoken Irish knockout artist.
Many have refused to give McGregor a chance against Mayweather and for good reason, as the “Notorious” one has never competed in a professional boxing match. To no surprise, however, McGregor has appeared to be nothing but confident heading into what would likely be the most lucrative bout in the history of combat sports.
The Irishman has been out of action since knocking out Eddie Alvarez last November at UFC 205 in New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Prior to that, he had set promotional pay-per-view records in back-to-back grudge matches with Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016 and at UFC 202 in August 2016. He and his longtime girlfriend, Dee Devlin, also recently gave birth to their first child, Conor Jr.
Nate Diaz won’t be serving his initial penalty from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Back in Aug. 2016, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held an infamous press conference inside the Copperfield Theater in Las Vegas. The presser was held to promote UFC 202, headlined by a rematch between Diaz and Conor McGregor. During the presser, […]

With a potential boxing super fight between Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor inching closer and closer towards a reality, some have questioned whether a bout between a boxing legend like Mayweather and a man who has never competed in a professional boxing match like McGregor would even be sanctioned.
According to Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) Chief Bob Bennet, however, the fight would be an ‘approvable’ bout:
“It’s definitely an approvable fight,” he told Boxing News. “This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, it is a bit of an anomaly, it’s unusual because both fighters are phenomenal fighters.
“But back in August of 1957 Floyd Patterson fought Pede Rademacher, Rademacher was making his pro debut, and they fought for the world heavyweight title. Patterson won by KO in the sixth round. So even though this would be Conor’s pro debut as a boxer, there is some precedence, but this would be the first time we see two fighters at this level, one from the MMA world and one from boxing, having a fight.”
Continuing on, Bennet cited McGregor’s training history and the fact that he is primarily a stand-up fighter as reasons why the fight would be sanctioned:
“He’s proven that he can fight as a stand-up fighter. I’ve seen some tape of him boxing, I’m sure I’ll get an updated version of his skill-set as a fighter. I certainly think he’s worthy of being approved to fight Floyd Mayweather. His UFC background is critical in approving this fight.”
“One of the critical things you have to take into account; Conor’s a phenomenal athlete,” he continued.
“When you go back, he took up kickboxing at the age of 12. As a youth he became an All-Ireland boxing champion. He goes to the UFC, of course he had several [MMA] fights before that, and while he’s with the UFC he’s 21-3 with 17 of those wins coming via knockout or TKO.
“He’s a stand-up fighter, he’s a southpaw, he hits like a tonne of bricks, he’s got a great jaw, he’s 5’ 9’’ and he’s got a reach of 74 inches. If you take a look at his wins in the UFC, they’re predominantly from striking [punching] and if you take a look at the fact he was able to move from 145[lbs] to 155 to 170, he’s displayed some awesome unarmed combat skills.”
Do you believe the potential fight should be approved by one of the world’s most prominent athletic commission?
