Out of respect for his friend and former light heavyweight champion, Dana White won’t put down Chuck Liddell over his reported comeback fight against Tito Ortiz.

Instead, White will go after the promoter behind the bout, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy.

When White was asked about Liddell’s interest in the third fight against Ortiz, he was honest in his reasoning while speaking on the topic during the UFC Liverpool post-fight press conference (via MMA Mania), having been the person to coax Liddell into retirement back in 2010 after three consecutive knockout losses:

“I hope he’s coming out of retirement to be partners with De La Hoya and not to fight. I hope he doesn’t fight. Oscar De La Arum is not that bright, but I don’t know what he’s thinking. The last thing I want to do is shit on Chuck Liddell, because I love him, but I asked him to retire 10 years ago for a reason.”

Liddell ended his MMA career on an unfortunate downward spiral while Ortiz made the move to Bellator and won several high-profile fights before retiring himself after choking out Chael Sonnen.

De La Hoya had expressed interest right away in a trilogy match between the two UFC legends and hall-of-famers while fight fans and now White have criticized the idea, as “The Iceman” hasn’t fought in eight years and both men are well past their primes.

Do you agree with Dana White’s opinion on De La Hoya’s promotion of Liddell vs. Ortiz III?

CSAC Exec Will License Chuck Liddell On One Condition

Will Chuck Liddell get past this hurdle?

Yesterday (Monday, May 14, 2018) former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell made waves by confirming he would come out of retirement.

Many were not surprisingly questionable of the 48-year-old’s chances in any legitimate MMA fight, yet it wasn’t all that much of a surprise given that “The Iceman” had been teasing a trilogy bout with Tito Ortiz for months. What was beyond questionable, however, was his callout of currently suspended former champion Jon Jones, who responded with a seething reply later in the day.

While the ridiculous match-up would almost never happen with Jones facing a potentially lengthy suspension from USADA and Liddell out of the UFC and likely never to return, it appears that the longtime UFC fan favorite will still be able to compete in his home state on one serious condition.

California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Executive Director Andy Foster – who is, ironically enough, dealing with Jones’ suspension at the state level – told MMAjunkie that Liddell will be licensed to fight in the state if he passes advanced medical testing:

“If Chuck passes his medicals – his advanced medicals … I will administratively grant him a license.”

The report stated that when licensing fighters older than 40 (Liddell is now 48), the CSAC follows guidelines from the Association of Ringside Physicians (ARP). The rules call for each fighter to submit a magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) of their brain, annual testing that includes a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain without contrast, EKG, cardiac testing, neurocognitive testing, blood work, and a vision test.

Foster claimed he would have no issue licensing Liddell ‘if he passed all his medicals,’ but if any of his tests came back abnormal “or subsequently suggest deterioration in health status,” the ARP would side with the decision to not license ‘The Iceman.’

And after the initial series of medical tests, Foster said that Liddell’s ability to compete is different than his ability to get licensed, and would ultimately depend on whom his opponent is. With Liddell rumored to take on Ortiz under Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions later this year, Foster wouldn’t take the bait and name the opponent:

“It would obviously depend on the opponent. I don’t want to comment on who the opponent is. You’re the reporter, and you know dang well who it is. But his ability to license is different from his ability to compete, and his ability to compete would depend on who the opponent is.”

So Foster did everything but name Ortiz, and he also said that the fellow former UFC great would have to renew his license as well. ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ retired after submitting Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170.

UFC President Dana White has understandably spoken out against Liddell’s comeback after he was the one who essentially commanded ‘The Iceman’ step down after three straight knockout losses to end his career. But after the UFC offered him a job for life then took it away when new owners Endeavor came along, he obviously doesn’t care too much about what they think.

That means we could legitimately be seeing Liddell vs. Ortiz III later this year, and from the sound of it, the fight may just take place in California.

Do you want to see it happen?

Jon Jones Responds To Chuck Liddell’s Callout

Jon Jones blasted Chuck Liddell after the unretired ‘Iceman’ called him out:

Earlier today, the mixed martial arts world was abuzz with the news that longtime former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell announced he would come out of retirement.

‘The Iceman’ had been teasing just that for months, yet it was still surprising to actually hear the 48-year-old MMA great actually confirm he would actually return to the cage. What was even more surprising was the fact he called out the supremely talented but always troubled Jon Jones for a match-up after he had two fights under his belt.

While it would be a match-up of two of the greatest champions in the storied UFC light heavyweight division, it’s obviously a hard fight to get behind considering Liddell is 50. Add Jones’ repeated issues with drugs both recreational and performance-enhancing, and you have a match-up that makes about as much sense as it has a chance of actually happening.

But that doesn’t mean ‘Bones’ would let the callout slide while he awaits his latest punishment from USADA. The suspended former champion replied to ‘The Iceman’ by offering to fly him out to Albuquerque for a fight:

Jones then questioned the strength of Liddell’s chin a few moments later:

And Jones didn’t let it go there, as he told the unretired knockout artist that while he may not be eligible to fight until mid-2019 due to ‘scheduling conflicts’ with other past-prime greats:

Jones is correct in saying that Liddell has been calling out for years because the fan favorite slugger has been making it a point to do so ever since ‘Bones’ beat his longtime training partner Glover Teixeira four years ago.

It’s a laughable match-up, of course, and it probably wouldn’t be possible until Liddell was almost 50 years old because of Jones’ latest suspension. He’s been linked to a trilogy fight with Tito Ortiz for his comeback in the meantime, supposedly under Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

So no matter how he fares in his comeback, Liddell has people talking – even the great Jon Jones. Are you interested in watching the aging Liddell return to MMA, or are you worried about his safety?
