Conor McGregor is back in training and we just might get the old one that everyone fell in love with according to his striking coach Owen Roddy.

McGregor will return to action for the first time in 15 months when he meets Donald Cerrone in a welterweight matchup in the main event of UFC 246 on January 18. And Roddy, for one, is particularly excited that his fellow Irishman is back:

“Yeah – we’re back,” Roddy told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “Conor is so busy, you can’t tie him down outside camp. And I’ve got a lot on myself, I’m running the gym and I’m doing a couple of other things. When we’re not seen constantly working together people start saying – what’s going on? I’m not doing many interviews because I’m flat out and he’s doing all of his stuff as well.

“We’re in camp now, so it’s go time. The one thing Conor has been constantly doing is working on his strength and conditioning – he’s constantly staying in shape and he’s constantly eating clean – and you can see that straight off the bat. Now it’s time for us to execute a game plan and go in and do it on the night. I’m very excited to be back working with him, and I’m very excited that he’s back fighting in the UFC.”

McGregor’s last fight was a fourth-round submission defeat to current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor kept going on about how his camp was poor for that fight and that the focus was too defensive.

Roddy agrees in the sense that their current training camp is much more structured and less “sporadic”:

“The training camp is structured way better,” Roddy explained. “The last camp was just a bit sporadic. We didn’t know what time we were training at. Sometimes it was very late at night, sometimes it was early in the morning and nobody really knew.

“Even though we were making all of these sessions, I don’t think that’s good for you when he doesn’t even know what time he’s going to train at, just doing it off feel. For the past couple of months it’s been very regimented.”

McGregor’s stock has dropped in the eyes of many fans not only because of his inactivity but actions outside the Octagon. However, Roddy believes McGregor is hungry and motivated again and fans will start to see the old one that they all fell in love with:

“… I think when you start to see some footage of him training, he starts to do his interviews and he starts building the fight, you’re going to see the old Conor back,” Roddy added. “… I can see that already. When people see that, they’re going to say, ‘That’s the Conor we fell in love with.’ He has that hunger again. A hungry, dedicated and motivated Conor McGregor is a scary dude.”

What do you think of Roddy’s comments?

Conor McGregor is rumored to be nearing his Octagon return in early 2020.

Despite rumors about McGregor having issues with his coaching staff, the Irishman’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, confirmed to MMA Junkie that he and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh will be in McGregor’s corner.

“Yup, yup, yup – yeah definitely, yeah,” Roddy said.

Initial reports suggest that McGregor could fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January. During a recent press tour in Russia, McGregor announced his return date is set for January 18, however, the UFC has not officially confirmed this.

McGregor would not confirm who his opponent was, but UFC president Dana White has since admitted that the promotion is working on a fight between McGregor and Cerrone. In regards to a fight between McGregor and “Cowboy,” Roddy offered his take.

“If it is ‘Cowboy,’ it would be an exciting fight, yeah,” Roddy said. “I said this a couple of months ago: ‘Cowboy’ and Conor is a great fight for the fans.

“Two guys that are exciting strikers – although ‘Cowboy’ is phenomenal on the ground, as well, but I think if it was a fight between them, it would be a striking battle, and I think it would be one for the fans, so if it is that, it’ll be an exciting one.”

How do you think a potential fight between McGregor and “Cowboy” plays out?

Conor McGregor’s legal proceedings in regards to his UFC 223 media day bus attack are now behind him.

This morning (Thurs., July 26, 2018) it was announced that a plea deal had been accepted for McGregor. The Irishman will not be charged with any felony counts, instead pleading guilty to disorderly conduct.

He will be forced to do five days of community service, take anger management classes and honor three orders of protection against Ray Borg, Jason Ledvetter, and Michael Chiesa. He’s not allowed to go near any of those men until 2020.

McGregor will also pay damages done to the bus.

Back in April McGregor stormed UFC 223 media day and attacked a pair of fighter buses holding fighters on the weekend’s card. McGregor threw a dolly at one of the windows and shattered it, which injured several fighters and forced them off the card.

“The Notorious” was targeting UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, earlier in that week Nurmagomedov had confronted McGregor’s teammate, Artem Lobov, at the fighter hotel along with his entourage. This upset McGregor, who was seeking physical retribution with the Russian. It’s perhaps likely they’ll get to settle their differences once and for all inside the Octagon with the UFC’s 155-pound title on the line.

McGregor’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, recently spoke to MMA Fighting and revealed that McGregor is eager to get back into the cage now that his legal troubles are behind him:

“That’s what we all envisaged would happen, and it’s just great to be able to get back to doing what we love to do,” Roddy said.

“Conor has been eager to get back out there; he’s been eager to get something in front of him, to set a date and to push for fight. I think now that it’s out of the way, the potential for Conor to get back in there is very, very high.”

“Mystic Mac” hasn’t fought in the UFC since November of 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden. The following year he made his professional boxing debut in a money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., in which the Irishman was unsuccessful as he lost via 10th round TKO.

Just when it looked like McGregor could be making his return earlier this year, his incident at UFC 223 essentially put his fight career on hold, as Roddy describes it:

“Everything was put on hold because of this. We all had hoped that we would get the news that we got today, but of course, nothing could have been set in stone before the decision came through.

“Anything could have happened, so everything had to be put on hold until Conor got this sorted. I know we are all eager to see what’s coming next and I’m sure something’s going to lined up.”

As for what Roddy thinks is next, a fight with Nurmagomedov before the end of the year sounds like the plan:

“That seems about right,” Roddy said. “I’m sure it’s all going to be negotiated now. I would like to see that fight this year and I think the frontrunner to be Conor’s opponent for his return is Khabib.

“As I said before, he’s eager to get something going, he’s been training hard. He’s been doing all sorts of wrestling and jiu-jitsu — he’s just been enjoying his training. I’m sure he’s going to strike a deal with the UFC, and whenever he’s in there, we’ll be prepared.”
