Artem Lobov Paddy Holohan

It didn’t take long for Artem Lobov to tip-toe his way back into the fight game, after recently announcing his retirement as a professional fighter. Lobov will compete against Paddy Holohan in a wheelchair boxing match for charity later this year.

Lobov signed up for the bout with Holohan over the weekend just weeks after his old teammate, UFC star Conor McGregor, expressed his desires to compete in a charity wheelchair boxing match in the near future. Comedian Steveo Timothy was the first to announce the news.

“What a day, what an experience!” Timothy tweeted. “The absolute gentleman [Artem Lobov] invited me up for a bit of training ahead of my fight with [Irish Olympian Paddy Barnes] and it was immense. And not only that, but he will now take part in the charity wheelchair fight against none other than [Paddy Holohan].”

After a brief run-in bare-knuckle boxing, Lobov opted to retire after a long career in combat sports. Despite a losing record of 13-15, Lobov was a massive fan favorite and also trained at SBG Ireland with McGregor, Charlie Ward, and others.

Lobov will fight against Holohan, who retired from fighting himself in 2016. Holohan now works in politics in Dublin, Ireland, and even ran for the mayor of Dublin last year, falling short in the elections. Holohan briefly fought in the UFC and accumulated a 12-2 record, getting submitted in his final outing against Louis Smolka in Oct. 2015.

While Lobov and Holohan won’t be returning to professional fighting anytime soon, it’s great to see them representing the sport and competing for a good cause. The event will most definitely help those in need in Ireland that don’t have the resources to get a wheelchair themselves. Lobov will more than likely compete in multiple events going forward.

What are your thoughts on the Artem Lobov vs. Paddy Holohan wheelchair boxing match for charity?

Deciding the right time to retire is always tough for a professional MMA fighter, but some don’t even get to make that choice, with serious injuries and ailments leaving them with no option but to hang up their gloves for good.

In this article, we’ll look at 10 stars whose time in the sport ended prematurely while they were still in the prime years of their career, and find out what became of them afterward.

Genki Sudo

Genki Sudo is fondly remembered for his remarkable fight entrances while fighting in Japan that were akin to mini-concerts with elaborate costumes, carefully choreographed dance routines and pyrotechnics.

He was also one of Japan’s best fighters, competing for the likes of the UFC, K-1, Pancrase, Rings and Heroes, and claiming victories over the likes of Nate Marquardt, ‘Kid’ Yamamoto, Mike Brown, Ramon Dekkers, Hiroyuki Takaya and Royler Gracie over the course of his 16-4-1 career.

However, in 2006 after a first-round triangle choke submission win over Damacio Page at the K-1 Premium Dynamite!! Event, Sudo delivered the shock news that he was retiring from the sport with immediate effect.

It transpired that Sudo had been suffering from a serious recurring neck injury that had left doctors fearing that he might suffer paralysis if he continued fighting.

After retiring, Sudo accepted a job as the manager of the Takushoku University’s wrestling team, while he’d also go on to appear in several movies and has written dozens of books.

Sudo also formed the music and dance band World Order, who have released several albums, performed around the world, been featured on numerous TV shows and have a YouTube channel with close to 100 million views.

Sudo retired from being the lead singer in the band back in 2015 but has remained involved as the director and producer for the group.

Paddy Holohan, Conor McGregor’s Teammate, Announces His MMA Retirement

patrick-holohan

Paddy Holohan has spent the past nine years competing in MMA.

Now, the SBG Ireland teammate of Conor McGregor’s will need to find a new passion.

Holohan announced his retirement after UFC officials learned of a rare disorder affecting him. He is 27 years old and leaves the sport with a record of 12-2-1.

“I was born with a factor missing in my blood called Factor XIII,” Holohan said. “I never disclosed it then or now. I can no longer pass the medical requirements to compete. I knew that it was so rare that organizations wouldn’t understand or take the chance with me, as I have found out now.

I never explained in full to my coach John Kavanagh or my team the actual risks because I didn’t think there was excess risk.”

Holohan has a rare blood clotting disorder that will force him to the sidelines.

“I’m happy because I always wore my heart on my sleeve, never cheated, never turned away from diversity or challenges, and always strived to inspire and encourage people from all backgrounds,” Holohan said. “And I’m sad because I will never make that walk again, under those lights, feeling all those uncomfortable, yet life-giving feelings as they count and you hear ‘Walk, walk, walk,’ staring into a camera, knowing millions are watching, but most importantly the Irish are watching.

Holohan was the main event for the recent card in Ireland, falling to Louis Smolka. He went 3-2 over five appearances inside the Octagon.

Paddy Holohan and Willie Gates will square off next month as part of UFC Fight Night 87.

The bout was recently added to the May 8 lineup from the Ahoy Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Alistair Overeem takes on Andrei Arlovski in the main event.

Holohan (12-2-1) has posted a 3-2 record over five Octagon appearances, but his two-fight win streak was snapped last October with a submission loss to Louis Smolka. The Irish fighter has topped Vaughan Lee, Shane Howell and Josh Sampo over the past two years.

Gates (12-6) was finished by Dustin Ortiz last August after stopping Darrell Montague earlier last year for his first UFC win. His dropped his debut – on short notice – to former top contender John Moraga in 2014.

Other planned bouts include Antonio Silva vs. Stefan Struve, Gunnar Nelson vs. Albert Tumenov and Germaine de Randamie vs. Anna Elmose.
