Paul Daley Officially Enters the “Bargaining” Stage of His Post-UFC Career

Paul Daley has seen some ups and downs since being ousted from the UFC, suffice it to say. Since sucker-punching Josh Koscheck after the final bell of their UFC 113 scrap, Daley has put together 10 wins alongside just 3 defeats under such promotions as Strikeforce, Bellator and the illustrious Shark Fights. Lately, however, legal/visa issues have prevented Daley from fighting in the US (where the real money is) and in fact saw him released from his Bellator contract just last week.

His back now against the wall, Daley has changed his tune in regards to his former promotion, thusly moving on to stage three of the five stages of grief: Bargaining. Daley first reached out to the UFC via his Facebook page:

Dana questioned about me again, Ariel saying he’s gonna get in touch with me, as we rally for a UFC return. Weather it happens or not, it’s kinda cool, that my recent performances and attitude has caught the attention of the big dogs, despite being on smaller shows.

Got an interview with Ariel Helwani tomorrow, seems talk of a UFC come back has gathered pace. Very important interview, as good a speaking with Dana himself…..oohh what to say?…Kinda nervous now….UFC Manchester? Diaz re-match, Sorry, I’ve grown up, I make weight…I’ve got a little son now…please help me feed him…

I don’t know about you, but “Help me feed my son” is my favorite form of heartstring-pulling, right up there with “Being on enter reality show here is my destiny, you guys!” Now all Daley needs to do is videotape himself selling flowers on the freeway and his audition tape will be complete!

When questioned on the potential of a Daley UFC return during the UFC on FOX 8 media scrum, Dana White was shockingly pessimistic.

“I thought he hated this place,” said White. “I heard he couldn’t get a visa. And they’re real strict here now on visas. I thought he hated the UFC and said he’d never want to come back here and never wanted to fight here again. What changed?” ”I don’t know, man. I don’t think so.”

A few days after being released from Bellator, Paul Daley is pushing for a return to the UFC Octagon.

“I want to be back with the UFC,” Daley said Monday on The MMA Hour broadcast. “It would be a dream come true to be back with the UFC. The things that I did say bad about the UFC, it was like what most fighters would do if they weren’t in the best organization in the world. You don’t want to be No. 2, you want to be No. 1.”

Bellator cut ties with the British welterweight, along with middleweight Maiquel Falcao, last Thursday because of issues away from the cage. 

In Daley’s case, those issues stem from an old assault case that is making it difficult for Daley to obtain a visa. Though it appeared those issues were resolved in June, Bellator apparently believed that logistical challenges remained and chose to release Daley.

Daley (33-12-2) was cut and unofficially banned from the UFC following a 2010 loss to Josh Koscheck. After the fight’s conclusion, Daley sucker-punched Koscheck, prompting UFC president Dana White to say at the time that Daley “will not fight in the UFC again.” In 2011, White backed away from that stance somewhat, though maintained his reluctance to bring Daley back into the fold.

Daley, 30, certainly knows how to please a crowd, both inside a cage (where he has 23 knockout wins to his name) and behind a mic, where he is naturally funny and a walking soundbite. Daley’s supporters have been lobbying hard for his return to the UFC. To date, the UFC has not indicated whether they have any interest in Daley.

Even if a UFC return does not occur, Daley could find a soft landing in Great Britain’s Cage Warriors promotion, which could make a major fight between Daley and current welterweight champ and UFC hopeful Cathal Pendred.

Here’s some unsurprising news: Due to their ongoing personal/legal troubles, Paul Daley and Maiquel Falcao were officially released from their Bellator contracts yesterday. While there are many things to take away from this decision, we think the most important one is that someone finally figured out how to break a Bellator contract without being sued. QUICK, EDDIE, TAKE TO THE STREETS!

You might recall that we slightly jumped the gun on Daley’s release after it had been reported that he was involved in a bar brawl (or “pub pugilistic” as they are known in London), the legal repercussions of which prevented him from entering the U.S. and competing under the Bellator banner. But in hindsight, we’ll just chalk up that previous article to our keen sense of premonition, pat ourselves on the back and order another Glen Garioch neat.

Falcao, on the other hand, found his legal trouble in the form of a wild gas station brawl (or “Thursday” as they are known in Brazil) that left his friend and fellow MMA fighter Kaue Mena hospitalized to this day. Fight of the Day: Paul Daley Puts on a Thai Plum Clinic Against Jimmy Pocket Lukasz Chlewicki at Cage Warriors 57

Remember when we told you that Paul Daley was scheduled to slaughter some poor Polack at Cage Warriors 57 last weekend? Well, as luck would have it, he all but slaughtered some poor Polack at Cage Warriors 57 last weekend. Crazy, right?

To his credit, +800 underdog Lukasz Chlewicki didn’t seem too afraid to stand and bang with “Semtex,” which when you look at Daley’s highlight reel, is akin to sticking your foot in a bear trap and hoping to win the Boston Marathon. Unfortunately, Chlewicki’s persistent clinch work would turn out to be the cause of his demise, as the visibly larger Daley would use the opportunities to put on a Muay Thai clinic. Punishing elbows and vicious knees befell Chlewicki until a Marvin Eastman-esque goat vagina was opened up on the right side of his shiny, bald head, forcing the ringside physician to call the fight between the first and second round.

Chin up, Lukasz. You might have had your ass kicked by one of the best ass-kickers outside of the UFC, but let’s look at the positives:

1) You ended the fight in the same state of matter as you began it in.

2) You were able to chew solid foods the next day.

3) You were fighting in a cage.

Paul Daley Has Assault Charges Dropped, Hopeful to Return to Bellator Soon

Paul Daley’s long wait to return to the United States is almost over after charges against him in his home country of England were dropped recently. The hard punching welterweight has been unable to travel to the United States while awaiting the outcom…

Paul Daley‘s long wait to return to the United States is almost over after charges against him in his home country of England were dropped recently.

The hard punching welterweight has been unable to travel to the United States while awaiting the outcome of alleged assault charges that were filed after a bar fight several months ago.

Now the good news is Daley has been cleared of all charges, and will be applying for his travel visa to return to the United States at any time.

“The case was thrown out, lack of evidence and contradicting witness accounts,” Daley said when speaking to Bleacher Report on Monday.  “I’m extremely happy.  Applying for my P-1 visa as we speak and hope to return to the USA and Bellator later this year.”

Daley was expected to take part in the last Bellator welterweight tournament that the promotion ran earlier this year, but when his legal entanglements arose he was forced out of the fights and back to the sideline.

While he was unable to travel to the United States, Daley did manage to stay busy picking up two wins fighting overseas.  He will have a third fight coming up on July 20 when he faces Lukasz Chlewicki in Cage Warriors 57 in England.

Assuming all goes well with that fight and his visa approval comes through without any holdups, Daley can resume his Bellator fighting career later this year.

Daley only got the chance to compete for Bellator one time after signing with the promotion last year. In that fight, Daley finished Rudy Bears with strikes midway through the first round.

Daley’s return to the welterweight division will be welcomed after injuries and delays have scrapped several high-profile fights lately. The issues include the upcoming welterweight tournament final (the one Daley was expected to take part in) when Douglas Lima suffered an injury in training, pushing back his scheduled fight against Ben Saunders.

It also doesn’t hurt Bellator that Daley has been cleared as they make a push into the television market in the United Kingdom. The Viacom-owned company recently started putting content on VIVA, a free television network in England, and signed several fighters from the area including former UFC fighter Paul Sass.

Then there is the intriguing matchup pitting Daley against perennial bad boy Jon Koppenhaver aka War Machine, who just recently returned to Bellator and picked up a win over Blas Avena.

Daley and War Machine were scheduled to face off in the first ever-televised Bellator fight on Spike TV in January before the British fighter was unable to travel to the United States.

Now with his legal issues cleared up, Daley will look to make his impact felt in the Bellator cage later this year.
