Paul Daley Regrets Hitting Josh Koscheck After UFC 113 Fight

Paul Daley’s always been one of the most interesting characters in mixed martial arts—at least from my point of view.

It’s not really that he’s a great martial artist—because he’s not. But he does have that one-punch knockout power and one hell of a temper to go along with it. Those two traits make him a must-watch in my book, even if his wrestling defense has failed him at important points in his career.

Obviously, one of those points was his UFC 113 bout with Josh Koscheck. Koscheck smothered Daley for three rounds, frustrating him on the way to winning a unanimous decision. After the fight, Daley famously sucker-punched Koscheck and punched his own ticket out of the UFC.

Does Daley regret the incident? He discussed it on last night’s episode of MMA Uncensored Live:

I do, I do. But, you know, everything happens for a reason. I’m here now, in New York and, yeah, I feel great.

Why did Daley punch Koscheck, anyway? We’ve never gotten a satisfying answer to that question, other than sheer (and understandable) frustration:

You know, it was a very frustrating fight to be in. I wasn’t thinking much. I sort of had flashbacks to my old days, and I just thought, ‘This guy’s punked me out on national TV. I just have to get my own back.’ So I did, and it didn’t work out very well.

It was back and forth. He’d say something, I’d say something. I think the final thing that was said, I said, ‘When this is done, when I get up, I’m gonna hit you.’ And I don’t think he believed me. I told him that. He’ll tell you that. I stick to my word.

Daley also said that he and UFC president Dana White—who famously said that Daley would never be welcome back in the UFC—are not on speaking terms, and he’s not sure they’ll ever make amends.

Daley has a chance to turn the page with his Bellator debut next month.

MMA: 10 of the Dirtiest Strikes in History

Whenever strikes are flying with bad intentions, the chance of a foul is always there. Sometimes like a confused animal that stumbles into the scene by accident, other times like a snarling dog let loose by the offender.

For the former, it’s a regrettable moment in their career that is usually never repeated again.

For the latter, it’s the dark humor of the situation itself they cannot resist. Their opponent is putting their trust in him to obey the rules, and like Lucy yanking the ball away from Charley Brown as he runs to kick, they too choose to indulge their whims, simply because they can.

That’s not to say a fighter found guilty of landing a dirty strike is a dirty fighter. It is simply an acknowledgement of those things within the rules and those things deemed illegal.

The sport has seen its fair share of both unintentional fouls and those done with clear malice, but whatever the motivation, the result is the same: a dirty strike.

Here is a list of 10 of the dirtiest strikes in MMA history, where the strike itself is more often than not the main point of contention.

Paul Daley Is Bellator’s Problem Now

(“Let’s fight like men, okay? No leg kicks, takedowns, submissions, or any punches that aren’t blind haymakers.”)

Remember when we said that Bellator’s roster is “becoming a dumping ground for disgraced former Zuffa prospects“? (We were specifically talking about heavyweights then, but still.) The latest word out of Rebneyville is that welterweight bad boy Paul Daley — who had recently asked to be released from his Strikeforce contract because they weren’t giving him enough fights — has been signed by Bellator. Daley’s promotional debut will take place at Bellator 72, July 20th at the University of South Florida’s Sun Dome in Tampa. Said Bjorn Rebney via press release:

I’ve been a Semtex fan for years. He’s an incredibly explosive fighter who is magic to watch inside the cage. So, when the opportunity presented itself to join forces with Paul, it was a simple decision to make. Paul’s one of those fighters I’ve always intentionally stayed home to watch and now I can watch him cageside at Bellator.”

Though Rebney deserves to be excited about signing a well-known knockout artist like Daley, two factors might stall out Semtex’s success in the Bellator cage:

Though Rebney deserves to be excited about signing a well-known knockout artist like Daley, two factors might stall out Semtex’s success in the Bellator cage:

1) Missing weight, which he’s unfortunately done four times since 2010. As we’ve seen during their most recent season, Bellator has a zero-tolerance policy for tournament fighters blowing it on the scale. And…

2) Dealing with wrestlers (see his losses to Josh Koscheck and Tyron Woodley). If Paul was pissed off at being blanketed by Koscheck for three rounds, oh man, just wait until he finds out about Ben Askren.

Daley most recently dropped a split-decision to Kazuo Misaki at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey in March, which was his third consecutive loss under the Strikeforce banner. Prior to the Misaki fight, he had won a pair of decisions last fall over Jordan Radev (at BAMMA 7) and Luigi Fioravanti (at Ringside MMA 12). Any suggestions for Daley’s first opponent in Bellator?

Less than a week ago, welterweight Paul Daley’s management team announced that he had been released from his contract by Strikeforce. According to the statement, Daley’s release was at the fighter’s request. Daley’s time without a promotion to fight under came to an end today when he signed with Bellator.

Upon his release, Daley stated, via MMAJunkie.com, “I’m happy that Strikeforce has granted my request to be released from their roster as I found it difficult to fight so infrequently.”  Daley signed with Strikeforce a few months after he was abruptly released from the UFC after sucker punching Josh Koscheck in the back of the head following UFC 113.

Daley fought with Strikeforce four times, putting together a promotional record of 1-3. His last bout with Strikeforce took place on March 3, 2012. In that bout Daley suffered a split decision loss to Kazuo Misaki. While under the Strikeforce banner, Daley was able to fight with other promotions, which he did three times, going 3-0 in those bouts.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said, via the organization’s website,

“I’ve been a ‘Semtex’ fan for years.

Daley will debut with the organization at Bellator 72, which is scheduled to take place on July 20 at the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL.  No opponent has been named for Daley.

Over the course of his career Daley has assembled a professional record of 29-12-2.
