Bellator light heavyweight Muhammed Lawal and Quinton Jackson might have talked some trash towards each other leading into their rematch at last Friday’s Bellator 175 event, but after “King Mo” beat Jackson by decision, he didn’t gloat but rather he tried to relate by acknowledging Jackson’s interview about missing family.

“That’s real stuff,” Lawal said of his post-fight conversation with “Rampage” after their rematch at the event (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “I haven’t seen my momma in a little while. I’ve got family that I don’t spend enough time with. I have a little brother that’s 17 that I haven’t seen him play basketball much. I’m missing out on a lot because I’m always training, or I’m always booked.”

Lawal and Jackson ended things on a respectful note. Not only did Lawal take home a victory that night but he also didn’t brush off the idea of another fight with a former UFC champion, who won a decision in their first fight three years ago.

“It makes no difference to me,” Lawal said. “If (Jackson) wants to fight me again, man, I’ll fight whoever. That’s what I do. As far as closure, we’re 1-1. I wouldn’t mind doing a third one. But if we fight, hopefully he could fight me at 205. If not, I’ll fight at heavyweight.”

Jackson’s future with Bellator MMA is up in the air due to his contract with the promotion likely to expire. Jackson completed his contractual obligations to the Viacom-owned promotion, leaving him free to fulfill a previous deal he signed with the UFC. Despite the likelihood of a trilogy fight with Jackson, Lawal will be fine as his schedule is booked anyway as he faced off with recent Bellator acquisition Ryan Bader at the event.

“I was like, thanks for coming to Bellator, because I can’t fight forever, and when it’s all said and done, we need people like you and Phil (Davis) and Lorenz (Larkin) and (Douglas) Lima and A.J. Mckee to take Bellator to a whole other level,” Lawal said. “When we fight, it is what it is. But once I’m done, keep on pushing. Keep on doing big things.”

Lawal and Bader are scheduled to fight at Bellator 180, which takes place June 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Quinton Jackson’s future is up in the air following his fight with King Mo on Friday night at Bellator 175. Jackson fought the last fight on his Bellator deal on Friday night, but the promotion’s President Scott Coker isn’t entirely sure what will happen next for him.

While speaking with the media following the fight, Coker confirmed that  Jackson is done with his contract following this fight. If you recall, Jackson was part of a court battle between the UFC and Bellator over which promotion held the rights to his services. After a one-fight stint in the UFC, he wound up back in Bellator, but it’s believed that he still has fights left on a UFC contract that he may be able to fulfill now that his Bellator deal has wrapped.

“That’s the confusing part of this relationship,” Coker said to MMA Junkie. “I know this is our last fight with ‘Rampage’ Jackson, and I currently don’t even know what his status is over there (at the UFC). I’ve heard rumors that he has a couple fights left over there. So I think he’s got to go finish his obligations, and then I don’t know if he’s a free agent after that or what his situation is. But he guy is a legend – he’s done so much. … I’m happy to have him fight for us … He’s definitely in the fourth quarter of his career, (but) the people love him. The fans love him.”

For now, Jackson said he won’t be making any calls just yet, but rather he plans to take a little time to relax.

“What’s next now is, I’m going to go eat me some pizza, probably get really drunk, then go back home and play some video games,” Jackson said. “I’ll take it one day at a time.”

Former light heavyweight champions Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson threw down to put three years of bad blood to rest in the main event of last night’s (Fri., March 31, 2016) Bellator 175 from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

The main difference between this fight and their first match-up which Rampage won by highly controversial decision at the promotion first pay-per-view (PPV) Bellator 120, however, was that Jackson came in weighing an astonishing 48 pounds more at 253 while King Mo weighed 212 pounds.

Many rightfully wondered how Jackson would deal with the extra added weight, and not surprisingly, Lawal made him expend lots of energy defending his world-class wrestling background with nonstop takedown attempts against the cage. A few succeeded in the first round, but overall, Jackson defended many of the attempts successfully. Still, Lawal was able to win a hard-fought decision thanks to a pressuring third round that was light on action from two obviously gassed fighters, but it wasn’t without some adversity as he admitted Rampage had rocked him during the second frame.

It may not have been the all-out brawl the trash talk-filled buildup had fans wanting to witness, but it was a solid, hard-fought rematch that earned both mens’ mutual respect and Lawal a shot at new Bellator name Ryan Bader. Combat sports is a bizarre space by any reasonable metric.

People leather up and get paid to blast each other in the chops for the amusement of the general populace, and the one who does it better will often double his or her pay for winning.

They might even get a further bonus on top of that, if they provide adequate spectacle on the way to their success.

Needless to say when people who have chosen this enterprise as a career are met with choices and conflicts related to the amounts they’re receiving in the noted contextsor the means by which they’ll collect those amountsthings can get a little unsteady. After all, when one is signing a contract to engage in a fistfight on a Saturday night, it’s not silly to think that the fine print isn’t the first thing on their mind.

And so we come to the struggle of Bellator headliner Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. In 2013, he left the UFC to join Bellator after he had some issues with how Dana White and company did business. He fought three times for his new bosses, going 3-0, before realizing he wasn’t crazy about the greenness of the grass there either.

What unfolded was a lengthy stretch where Jackson refused to fight for Bellator, and the company attempted to force him to fight for them. The end result was that some lawyers got rich, Jackson went to the UFC for a single bout with Fabio Maldonado, and Bellator eventually got him back—he beat Satoshi Ishii last June, and he’ll rematch King Mo Lawal this weekend at Bellator 175.

The Maldonado fight itself was a weird, off-and-on proposition that came together at the 11th hour and had to be contested at a catchweight in order to happen at all. It helped add starpower to a lagging UFC 186 and was contested largely on the feet between two men who enjoy showcasing their boxing.

It was a curious happening all around, and though the fight itself is not one that immediately springs to mind for being memorable, it’s worth recalling that time Jackson and Maldonado threw down for one key reason: It reminded us all just how weird the business of combat sports can be.
