If signed, it would be a battle of former UFC light-heavyweight champions, but a reported Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida matchup has yet to be officially added to the UFC calendar.
That’s the word coming from UFC President Dana White, who responded to an MMA Fighting inquiry about whether the bout was finalized with a text reading “Not yet.”
Still, at least one of the fighters has agreed to it. A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting that Jackson has agreed to the November bout.
After “Rampage” Jackson lost to Rashad Evans in May, we immediately celebrated with childish joy, when Dana White stated afterwardS that B.A. Baracus 2.0 may face Lyoto Machida next. It’s a match-up that makes total sense- two former champs coming off a loss- it should sell a ton of PPV’s; let’s do it up right? […]

It’s a match-up that makes total sense- two former champs coming off a loss- it should sell a ton of PPV’s; let’s do it up right? Now, when Jackson was quoted saying recently he was hoping to do a rematch with Forrest Griffin that also sounded pretty sweet, but maybe because we haven’t seen Machida vs. Jackson before, that bout remained as our starting QB (having a fine back-up ready to go is one of life’s most valuable lessons…)
Well, in a story this AM from MMA Junkie, the outlet is reporting that “sources close to the organization” have informed the outlet that Jackson has verbally agreed to fight Machida, November 20th. The charismatic former champion also posted this on his Twitter yesterday:
“almost ready 2 sign the bout agreement! i would tell yall who im gonna get down with, but i cant spell his name….hahaha”
Now, Rampage’s usual bit about his linguistic skills aside, we’re thinking that joke can’t be referring to the word Griffin. So, it would appear that a bout between Jackson and Machida is a couple of pen strokes away. It’s a huge fight that will say a lot about where each guy sits in the division.
(Somehow, I don’t think this is the first time Chael rocked this feathered coif.) Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida spoke with Sherdog.com recently about "The Spider’s" upcoming UFC 117 tilt with Chael Sonnen and "The Dragon’s" rum…

I don’t know if it’s because I’m not easily entertained or because every fighter seems to spout the same tired crap to the same tired questions, but I would be much more interested in all the pre-fight drama if they made these guys live together for their entire training camp before they fight like on "The Ultimate Fighter." That way, we could watch them squabble about real issues they have with each other like who left the toilet seat up and who drank the last of the morning urine and didn’t throw out the container. You can’t fake that kind of drama.

Sometimes Strikeforce interviewer and MMA H.E.A.T. reporter Karyn Bryant sat down with current number one UFC light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans recently and got his take on some of his former and potential future opponents among other topics.
Here’s what Suga had to say about his fight with Rampage, his shot at Shogun and Lyoto’s camp’s call for an interim title bout.

UFC President Dana White confirmed Thursday that current champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua won’t be back in the octagon for another eight months, likely returning in March 2011.

After “Rampage” Jackson failed to beat Rashad Evan’s ass at UFC 114, as he had continually insisted he would do, speculation immediately kicked in as to who the former champ would face next. UFC President Dana White was quoted saying that Lyoto Machida was a possibility, while Jackson called for a rematch with Forrest Griffin, who, like Evans, has defeated the 21st Century version of B.A. Baracus by Unanimous Decision.
Well, according to a report this afternoon from MMA Junkie, Jackson’s next fight will likely be against Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira, and neither Griffin or Machida. The story cites “sources close to the competitors”, who have reportedly told the outlet that verbal agreements are in place for the fight, which could take place at UFC 119, 120 or even 121 (if you can even follow the numbering thing anymore). The report goes on to say that UFC 119 is scheduled for September 25th in Indianapolis, 120 for October 16th in London, while plans for UFC 121 are still in the works.
So, what’s our take on this (even if you didn’t ask)? Well, although a lot of folks thought “Lil Nog” should not have been awarded that Split Decision victory over Jason Brilz in May, just ask Luis Cane, Dan Henderson or Alistair Overeem, if Nogueira is a top light-heavyweight. In other words, like 90% of fights featuring a Nogueira twin, it should be damn good. There’s no doubt a fight between Rampage and either Machida or Griffin would likely be more of a “box office draw,” (as main stream fans haven’t seen a lot of Lil Nog yet) but hell, this will work no?
