BJ Penn Is Open to a Return to Lightweight, Wants One More Title Shot

BJ Penn wants another title shot before he rides off into the sunset of Hawaii and he doesn’t particularly care what weight class it is in.

MMAweekly.com reported in an article following the UFC 137 media conference call held late last week that Penn would indeed be open to a return to the 155-pound division before his career is finished.

“I’d love to get another title before I step out of the game. I’d love to get another, maybe win the welterweight title one more time. Maybe even if possible, try to get the lightweight title one more time,” Penn said on the conference call.

When asked if he thinks he will get a title shot if he beats Diaz, Penn didn’t want to get ahead of things:

“I don’t want to speak too soon. As far as everything goes, I’m just trying to take it one fight at a time. If Dana feels that I am impressive in my next fight, and he wants to grant me that opportunity, I’d be very gracious for the offer.

“As far as getting a title shot or whatever, I think a bunch of the title shot and all of that, it’s about the right timing, who is open, who is injured, who’s not injured,” he added.

Penn has fought in 11 title fights which ties him for third on the UFC all time list, tied with Georges St-Pierre and behind only Randy Couture (15) and Matt Hughes (12).

He is definitely open for a return to the 155-pound division to get that next title shot.

“If the offer presented itself, I would jump at the chance,” Penn said.

At 32 years of age, Penn is not close to considering retirement.

“I’m not planning on going anywhere soon, but you never know when you get that opportunity for a title shot, or maybe get a title, just like Carlos Condit. He’s going to sit out and wait because he never knows again when he could get that opportunity.”

“I understand him doing something like that. You never know, I’d love to stick around as long as Randy (Couture) stuck around if I could do something like that.”

Fighters Only Magazine announced today that Chael Sonnen will host this year’s addition of the World MMA Awards. The outspoken “American Gangster” will replace last year’s host, Randy Couture and will undoubtedly inject some humor and testosterone into the program.

The show, which will be co-hosted by ESPN’s Molly Querim, will be broadcast live on Wednesday, November 30th from the Pearl Theatre at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on Fox Sports and will be re-broadcast on Fuel TV later in the week.

In a release sent out by FO today, CEO Rob Hewitt had the following to say about the addition of MMA’s biggest talker:

“I say it every year that we want to make the awards show bigger and better and every year we have done just that. However, none of it would be possible with out the support of the MMA industry, the fans, our sponsors and TV and venue partners who all believe as much as we do in this project. To celebrate the sport we love and the people within it in the way that we do is a crowning moment of the year for Fighters Only and we can’t wait to reveal this year’s winners.”

Tickets for the World MMA Awards 2011 are priced at $59, $79 and $99, plus additional fees, and go on sale on Friday, October 21st at noon. Tickets can be purchased at the Pearl Box Office, by calling 702-944-3200 or at any Ticketmaster location. Doors for the event on November 30th open at 6 pm, with show time at 7.30pm.

If you got all of the answers you would have gotten 22 right. Worth noting is that not one person got all 22 and most (who were frontrunners up until we received the winning entry last night) topped out at 17. Many forgot to mention Sensei Seagal since most don’t consider him an MMA personality and the majority didn’t catch the background “bonus” characters in the Sons of Anarchy and Shootfighter 2 clips. A few, who are likely kicking themselves today, incorrectly stated that the clip with Joe Son was from Shootfighter, NOT Shootfighter 2.

We’d like to say thanks to Hayabusa for offering us such a great prize and to everyone for entering. Unfortunately there can only be one grand prize winner.

As a consolation prize we will be sending the runners up one of our coveted Cage Potato “Devil Horns” or “Hall of Fame” shirts. If your name is called, send us your shipping info and shirt size at [email protected]: Blakethoria, John Hernandez, Noah Kalkstein, Miles Ravitz, Chris Reid and Justin Williams.

And the big winner, and a true expert of Googling obscure MMA cameos is…. Michael Jones. Shoot us your shipping address and size and we’ll get your prize out to you.

As great as it is to watch the best athletes perfect their craft in dominant performances, few would disagree that the one thing that might be more entertaining is a big upset from an underdog.

Other sports have a long-standing history of epic upsets. Hockey has “The Miracle on Ice,” the NFL has the Giants surprising the previously undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl a few years go, College Football saw Appalachian State defeat Michigan, boxing’s Buster Douglas shocked Mike Tyson, and so on.

Many of these moments have gone down not only as great upsets, but also as some of the best moments in the given sport’s history.

Mixed martial arts may not have an upset of those levels yet, but given the unpredictability of the sport, it has certainly had its fair share of shocking moments.

In this list of the top 25 biggest upsets in MMA history, I’ll be examining some of the most important and most unexpected underdog victories that the sport of mixed martial arts has ever seen.
