Undefeated UFC lightweight prospect Khabib Nurmagomedov has long been pegged for great things in the world’s largest proving ground for martial artists. It looked briefly as though his hopes were wavering during his unfortunate spree of injuries, but thankfully the Sambo specialist had guys like Dominick Cruz to inspire him during that dark patch. Having been out of action for two years since his dominant win over current lightweight boss Rafael dos Anjos in 2014, ‘The Eagle’ was set to finally face his rival Tony Ferguson this weekend.

Then in a sad twist of fate, ‘El Cucuy’ pulled out injured and Nurmagomedov was instead slated to face Darrell Horcher at UFC on FOX 19. Since that time Ferguson had asked ‘The Eagle’ to wait and fight him in May, which didn’t appeal to Nrumagomedov, as he told MMAFighting.com yesterday:

khabib-Nurmagomedov_vice_670

“He’s running, that’s why my face isn’t on the poster any more. I’m here, he called me out, and now he pulled out. He asked me to wait, I can’t wait two more months, I trained to fight here. My plan is to fight in April and September, I can’t let Ferguson make my plans, Tony can’t talk about me, when you pull out you have to stay quiet. I didn’t ask Tony to wait when the UFC put him against Edson Barboza, this is stupid.”

“He’s injured, he pulled out, I’m here, where is Tony? I have to focus on Horcher, please forget about Tony. I like this atmosphere, I’ve finally come back.”

In terms of competition elsewhere in the UFC lightweight division, Nurmagomedov is interested in facing dos Anjos again although he says he proved his point the last time they fought, then the conversation turns to Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz…

See who could be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 16…

News broke late last night that once again Khabib Nurmagomedov’s return had been hindered by injury, but this time it was not his own. Tony Ferguson, originally scheduled to face ‘The Eagle’ on April 16’s UFC on FOX 19 card, withdrew from the bout with just 11 days notice. Nurmagomedov has been out of action for two years now, his last performance a dominant win over current lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, and now the 22-0 Sambo master is looking for a replacement for ‘El Cucuy.’

We saw that Donald Cerrone threw his name in the mix, but with his own fight against Patrick Cote also at risk, it’s possible the UFC might look elsewhere. Luckily for the matchmakers, there’s been a number of fighters making themselves available for Nurmagomedov, but not all of them for April 16.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos claims he has unfinished business with ‘The Eagle,’ but his old foe wasn’t too co-operative when the Brazilian came knocking:

That’s gonna sting.

So who else is in the mix for the top lightweight contender to face this month?

It’s a legitimate question, as the fate of not just one or two, but three divisions could rest on the shoulders of Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 196…

The lead up to UFC 196 was marred with injury when Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot training for Conor McGregor and was forced to withdraw from this weekend’s (Saturday March 5, 2016) pay-per-view main event.

Suddenly the card was under serious threat of unravelling and the search for McGregor’s stand-in opponent was on with under two weeks left to fight date. The ironic similarities between UFC 196 and the UFC 189 saga were obvious.

In stepped Stockton bad boy Nate Diaz, and suddenly a battle of trash talkers would headline UFC 196, which, for the most part, has been massively entertaining.

But there was one caveat from the camp of Diaz, as they weren’t willing to cut down to lightweight on such short notice so the fight had to take place at welterweight. A fair enough statement, but the ramifications of this move up of two weight classes for featherweight champ ‘The Notorious’ could be felt in no small amount by three of the UFC’s most popular divisions.

McGregor-Dos-Anjos-Collage[1]

As McGregor makes his 170-pound debut, consider this; how well will his body adapt from being molded to that of a welterweight competitor, to cutting straight back down to featherweight for his next fight?

Probably not very well, and with the original booking of dos Anjos still potentially looming, it’s likely that he’ll be facing the Brazilian lightweight boss in his next fight. For the line of featherweight contenders and the ex-champion Jose Aldo, this is not an exciting prospect.

Frankie Edgar

So already you see the complications for the featherweight class, but what about lightweight?

If you remember, in recent weeks McGregor said he wants to fight Robbie Lawler for the welterweight belt at UFC 200. That statement may not hold weight in the myriad of trash talk going on recently, but remember how he called out the lightweight champion before thumping Aldo, and look what happened there.

So conceivably two divisions could be put completely on hold, as could the top contenders at welterweight if McGregor faces Lawler next, but that could also depend on when dos Anjos is healthy to defend.

And so we come to the crux of the article, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor at UFC 196?

Whether you love him or hate him, Conor McGregor is leading the way in mixed martial arts right now, but one welterweight contender in particular is hoping the Irishman loses to Rafael dos Anjos…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is certainly not in the fight business to make friends. His outspoken manner has seen him both revered and despised by certain sects of mixed martial arts fans, but in fairness to McGregor that’s the case with most fighters. The hopes of the Irish nation firmly rests on his shoulders as ‘The Notorious’ takes on Rafael dos Anjos for the 155-pound title at UFC 196, and they’ll be hoping for a repeat performance of his stunning KO victory over Jose Aldo at UFC 194.

McGregor’s draw to even the casual fan is undeniable, but his appeal to certain fighters is limited to say the least. One welterweight contender in Demian Maia is actually hoping for ‘The Notorious’ to get beaten by RDA, and it all stems from some of the Irish striker’s recent comments. He revealed that he wants a crack at Robbie Lawler’s welterweight belt if he is able to top dos Anjos, and the sixth ranked 170-pounder Maia is not keen on the idea.

Demian Maia

Here’s what the Brazilian grappling ace told MMAFighting.com just yesterday:

“(It would be) Sad (if McGregor got a shot against Lawler), you know, because that’s crazy,” Maia said. “We are athletes, and we work very hard in our way to the title. I understand that this fight would make a lot of money, but as an athlete, I don’t agree with that. I can’t disagree more.

“If you think okay, you gotta work, do a couple fights at least to prove that you can fight because it’s a different division. But, at the end of the day, I don’t think he will win against Rafael.”

“It’s too much weight difference,” he said. “I think it’s a different body type. Rafael is very tough, he proved that in his last fights. I’m sure (Conor) has his chance, of course. He proved that against Aldo.

“Most people that understand the sport didn’t think he was going to win, and he did in a fashion way. It was crazy. I was shocked. I went to the corridor to watch the fight, just relax, and when the things happened I was shocked. I was really, ‘what the f—’.”

“Yeah, I will,” said Maia when asked if he would be pissed if McGregor gets a shot at the welterweight title.

“I hope he doesn’t win (against dos Anjos),”

“Give me that title shot if I win,” said the Brazilian. “If I win that fight I wanna fight for the title. Forget about McGregor.”

Conor McGregor 197

McGregor might disagree, but to a certain extent Maia is right for the wrong reasons. Yes money is more important to the UFC and that sucks, but the effect on the featherweight division if he Conor takes a fight at welterweight could be devastating. Sure, the promotion could run an interim title, but will they do that for a trilogy maker between Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar perhaps?

That said, a three weight world champion would just be insane.

UFC 196 could be a truly historic event, as featherweight champion Conor McGregor moves up to lightweight to battle Rafael dos Anjos in the main event. The brand new official promo video is here…

Where will you be on March 5, 2016? If you’ve even heard of mixed martial arts, the chances are you’ll know about the stacked event going down on that long awaited date. The main event features a highly anticipated lightweight championship bout, as Conor McGregor puts the featherweight division on hold to face his bitter rival and lightweight boss, Rafael dos Anjos. Ever since the ‘Go Big’ presser last November, the two elite combatants have been at loggerheads.

For Rafael dos Anjos, it’s a chance to avenge his countryman Jose Aldo, whom ‘The Notorious’ destroyed with a single punch at UFC 194. The 13-second spectacle was one of the craziest moments in modern MMA, and was very similar to another fighter on UFC 196’s schedule, Holly Holm.

Love him or hate him, it’s clear that the mixed martial arts world is fixated with Conor McGregor. Both his antics inside and outside the UFC octagon are constantly followed, and his role as the biggest MMA heel in Jon Jones’ place has been a smooth transition.

His value to the promotion is unquestionable, and they’ve really pulled out all the stops for the official UFC 196 promo video, which has been gathering some serious heat.

Anthony Pettis will defend his lightweight title against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 185 in March.

Twitter personality Front Row Brian was first to break the news, not Ariel Helwani and Fox like some might say.

Pettis last fought at UFC 181 in December, thrashing Gilbert Melendez and submitting him in the second round with a guillotine choke.

Dos Anjos, too, is coming off a hot victory. He dominated Nate Diaz at UFC on FOX 13. Prior to that, he knocked out former lightweight champ Benson Henderson at UFC Fight Night 49.

While we were hoping for Pettis vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, Pettis vs. dos Anjos isn’t a terrible booking decision either. We’re looking forward to this one.
