With Kyoji Horiguchi In Rizin, Demetrious Johnson Is Missing The Challenge He Craves

The naysayers that read that title will likely have already dismissed that statement. “Kyoji Horiguchi? Didn’t Demetrious Johnson beat that dude already?” The answer is a resounding yes. That said, ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson has gone on record stating that the karate master was the toughest foe he’s faced. It’s been years since that match and since then we’ve seen improvements in both flyweights. That’s what makes it so frustrating that Kyoji Horiguchi has left the UFC to return to Japan and compete in Rizin Fighting Championships. His departure also means that Demetrious Johnson is missing the opportunity to be challenged by one of his biggest threats.

While Johnson is certainly happy taking out the other members of the flyweight division, attempting to make history in the process, one has to wonder what else is he doing this for. He doesn’t want to just fight opponents he knows he can beat. Despite the fact that he is a great fighter in his own right, Wilson Reis didn’t have the speed and technical ability to truly challenge Johnson at UFC on Fox 24. The result was a one sided beat down in the manner that makes you wonder, who the hell can even challenge Johnson?

There’s Joseph Benavidez who lost on two separate occasions to the flyweight champion. There’s Henry Cejudo who is as tough as they come and is making improvements. But who else really has that stuff that separates them from the pack?

Kyoji Horiguchi, that’s who.

While Johnson was tying Anderson Silva’s record for most consecutive title defenses, Kyoji Horiguchi was on the other side of the world picking up his fourth straight win with a demolition of Yuki Motoya at Rizin 5. His speed, blitzing ability, boxing techniques, and improved wrestling due to his stint at American Top Team were all on display. Watching Horiguchi do work against Yuki Motoya only made me yearn to see him once again lock horns with Johnson.

As far as champions go, Johnson is the one given the least recognition even after accomplishing so much. He’s dominated nearly all of his opponents en route to his impressive ten consecutive title defenses, yet because he appears to be doing all of it in his sleep, people think he’s not being challenged enough. That may be unfair, but people want a storyline to latch onto, an opponent that can rival the skills of the champion. They want another individual who smashes the competition with ease and looks like a world beater in their own right. The flyweight division is lacking in star power outside a few individuals and if they don’t make a concerted effort to build it up it’s likely to remain the dark horse division of the UFC. The fact that the upper brass didn’t do everything in their power to ensure that Horiguchi remained on the roster shows a bit of naiivity on their part. If they want the division to flourish they need multiple stars, multiple fighters that make viewers from not just the west, but around the entire world to want to tune in.

If the UFC brass are smart they’ve kept track of Kyoji Horiguchi and if the young karate fighter is able to dominate in Rizin, there should be no reason that he isn’t brought back to the biggest promotion in the world. Demetrious Johnson wants a challenge, wants to prove he’s the absolute best to have ever done it. Perhaps he already has proved just that. But it wouldn’t hurt to see him in there again with a man that could also sport those same credentials. As I always invoke, only time will tell if we’ll ever get the chance to see Johnson and Horiguchi lock horns again.

Legendary heavyweight striker Mirko “Cro Cop” Filopovic has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts according to a report from Croatia Week.

Cro Cop last competed this past weekend in the Rizin Fighting Federation Open-Weight Grand Prix Tournament in Saitama, Japan, winning three straight fights to take home the tournament crown. Despite his successful performance, the 42-year-old knockout artist said that he’s dealing with ‘health problems’ and that he would no longer be competing:

“That was definitely my last tournament. I have health problems and this is definitely the end of my career,” Filipovic said. “I know I have announced my retirement before, but this is definitely it.”

It is indeed the second time he has announced his retirement, as he withdrew from a scheduled UFC Fight Night 79 bout in 2015. Filipovic said that he was dealing with an injury at the time and that he would no longer be fighting, although it was later announced that he had been popped by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping agency. The UFC cut ties with the Croatian and he was suspended from fighting in the UFC for two years.

Cro Cop will undoubtedly be remembered for his legendary run in PRIDE, and although his success in Japan may not have transferred over to the UFC as well as many had expected, he remains a legend of the sport as does his lethal left high kick.

Combat Sports Legend Mirko Cro Cop Reveals Plans to Retire

A legend in combat sports may finally follow through with his retirement plans. Mixed martial arts (MMA) and kickboxing icon Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic told Nova TV (via MMAWeekly.com) that he simply can’t go on after 20 years of wear and tear:

“I signed a contract for 15 fights with Rizin! I’m kidding of course. This is definitely my last major tournament, my last tournament, definitely this is the end of my career. I have health problems and I cannot continue.”

Cro Cop is leaving the door open just a tad bit as far as having a farewell fight goes. The roadblock would be the Croatian’s knee.

“The only option remains some farewell fight, but this is only if I rehabilitate my knee. I never want to go through what I went through during the preparation for this tournament. I know that I have often said I am ending my career, but this is really the end.”

Perhaps Cro Cop’s performance at Rizin 4 was all that he had left. The final Pride FC open-weight Grand Prix champion turned back the clock at the Rizin FF World Grand Prix 2016 tournament. He knocked out Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, Baruto Kaito, and Amir Aliakbari to take the open-weight Grand Prix title.

Despite hinting at retirement in the past, Cro Cop insists that this time it’ll stick.

“It will be difficult, that’s for sure. People who know me tease me because of how many times I have retired, but I promised my family that this time it is final.”

If he does indeed retire, Cro Cop will not soon be forgotten in the world of combat sports. He has won championships in Pride FC and K-1 as well as competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He has fought and defeated some of the best MMA and kickboxing fighters of all time.

Tensions are running very high between Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Cro Cop…

Earlier this week we reported Wanderlei Silva was out of his Rizin FF bout with Mirko Cro Cop. Scheduled to face each other for the third time, Wandy and Cro Cop were to collide on December 29. The Croatian’s response to this news was a wicked rant, during which he claimed ‘The Axe Murderer’ was a ‘chicken.’ Having fought to a draw in their first fight, and the second ending by brutal KO for Cro Cop, there’s enough history behind this beef already.

Now that they’ve engaged in a war of words outside the ring, their rivalry brings back memories of the Pride days. Although now long gone, Rizin is reigniting the passion for Japanese MMA first sparked in the late 1990’s. When the organisation went defunct in 2007 and was bought out by the UFC, hardcore fans remained optimistic for a future revival. Perhaps this is why Rizin Fighting Federation has such a cult following. Back to the subject, Wanderlei Silva has now responded to Cro Cop’s rant.

Wanderlei’s Response

As the dust barely settles on Mirko Cro Cop’s scathing rant, his rival Wanderlei Silva has fired one right back. During a video uploaded to his Youtube channel, ‘The Axe Murderer’ claimed it was his Croatian rival who is the coward.

I am here to give an explanation to my fans about why I won’t compete in December. My recovery, I wasn’t able to be 100% for this fight, and I am a professional. I would never fight, not with Mirko or anyone, without being prepared, and what surprised me the most with all of that is that this guy, this Croatian, Mirko Cro Cop, in front of me called me the best of the world, the legend, and behind a computer, started talking shit about me.

What kind of man are you Mirko? To say a lot of shit on Internet, and not say it to my face? Are you only a man when behind a computer? You pussy. Who do you think you are talking to? Chill out, it won’t be now, but soon you’ll get what is yours, I know very well how to catch you, and I know you are afraid of me, you coward.

“1 Million Dollars”

So really it was offered me a very good amount of money to fight Mirko, they offered me 1 million dollars, and I could, I am training and I could get in and see what happens. If I got there and fought 30 seconds or 1 minute my purse would be the same but I am a professional, and I would never do that without being 100% ready to give the show that all my fans are used to see. So, to fight with you, you pussy, or with anyone, I will fight when I am 100%. Everyone knows I am coming back from a serious injury, I am recovering well, thank God, I am training well and I am training to get back to the old form, the real mad dog. I won’t fight without being ready, I will fight to win, and Silva is back, you can wait.
