UFC 266 featured a featherweight main event title fight and a women’s flyweight title fight. Valentina Shevchenko reigns supreme at 125 pounds and Alexander Volkanovski proved his championship status is no fluke.

There was a lot to take away from UFC 266, here are some things that stood out.

Nick Diaz Returns

Diaz has not fought since he faced Anderson Silva at UFC 183. For some reason, the UFC decided to put together this fight with Diaz and Robbie Lawler and even Diaz does not understand why, but he only knows that he needs to fight according to his conversation with Brett Okamoto. For the hardcore MMA fans that have been along for the ride since their first fight, no reason has to be given to watch. It’s Nick Diaz versus Robbie Lawler, that’s reason enough.

Roxy Fighter

Roxanne Modafferi lost her fight to Taila Santos and it’s rare to write about the person that lost the fight. However, one thing that went under the radar was that this was Modaferri’s 44th outing in MMA and her 11the bout in the UFC. She’s been fighting since 2003 and still gets put on cards. She deserves some recognition.

Dan Hooker and Nasrat Haqparast

These two men had fought through a lot of issues to get to UFC 266. According to Paul Fleder during the broadcast, they only arrived in Vegas the night before they had to make weight and made their contracted weight. They fought all three rounds and the decision went to Hooker, but this was one fight that was expected to win “Fight of the Night” honors.

A Women’s Flyweight Problem

Jessica Andrade became the first woman to finish Cynthia Calvillo and she did so, the way many expected, with power. The women’s flyweight division seems to be dominated by Shevchenko, what happened in the strawweight division could happen in the women’s flyweight division where the same names keep running across each other. Andrade already fought and lost to Shevchenko, she’ll need a new game if they meet again.

“I had it comin’.” -Nick Diaz

Lawler and Diaz are now 1-1 against one another. In a fight that seemed like it was the main event on a card with two title fights booked as the main and co-main event, the fight looked to be a war for the first three rounds. But something about Diaz coming showed that time away, and time passed took its toll on the elder Diaz that started fighting when he was 18 years old. He fought great and lost, but this will likely not be a trilogy. Fires burn, then they burn hot for a while before they eventually burn out.

Luck Runs Out for Lauren Murphy

Murphy’s story in the UFC has been great, and she will likely stay atop UFC women’s flyweight contender but Shevchenko’s dominance as champion keeps making more of a case to have her and Amanda Nunes do something at catchweight because it seems, there is no one else out there for them.  At least right now.

Total War

Volkanovski took the very best of Ortega’s arsenal in their title fight and kept coming at him to score the win. If fans needed proof of the legitimacy of his status as champion, he likely gave it to them at UFC 266. He survived several submission attempts from Ortega, including his famed triangle choke which is where the “T-City” name comes from (Triangle City). Daniel Cormier said at the end in the in-cage interview both men should take a bow, and they should.

There’s obviously more to take away from this event than what is listed here. The women’s flyweight division has seemingly been cleaned out and Volkanovski has absolutely improved his stock. The UFC seems to be closing out the year with some interesting fights, and with their return to New York City nearing, what else will they be bringing to fans in match announcements?

What did you take away from the event?

Robbie Lawler

Former UFC welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler has avenged his April 2004 knockout loss to former WEC and Strikeforce welterweight kingpin, Nick Diaz, handing the Stockton favorite a third round knockout defeat.

A real aggressive start from former champion, Lawler backs Diaz up to the fence in the opening round who punches look labored already.

Despite that, the Stockton native managed to throw in excess of 150 strikes in the opening round against Lawler, with the pair engaging in a strict boxing match so far.

Lawler scores some more good work in the second round, appearing to hurt Diaz’s body with a well-placed kick. Lawler really yet to take a step back, while Diaz is attempting to counter off the fence continuously, still looking quite labored with his punches.

Early in the third round, Lawler appears to land well with a check right hook, sending Diaz to one knee before the Stockton native reverted to his back. When beckoned to return to his feet by referee, Jason Herzog to return to his feet, Diaz, who appears to have suffered a broken nose, refused — resulting in a TKO loss.

Below, catch Lawler’s third round knockout win over Diaz.

Nick Diaz had his first fight in six years when he stepped into the octagon with Robbie Lawler.

The two fighters met in a bout on Saturday night (Saturday, 25, 2021) at the UFC 266 pay-per-view event from Las Vegas, Nevada at the T-Mobile Arena. This was a fun fight and it all started in the first round. While Diaz didn’t have speed at first, once he got in a rhythm, he was landing in bunches. Lawler was also doing his thing and looked like Lawler. In the second round, Lawler tagged him with a good uppercut and Diaz started to back peddle. Diaz’s volume was a problem for Lawler.

Lawler was catching him with a left hook throughout the whole fight. Diaz’s defense was just throwing more shots and walking away. Even though Diaz was throwing combos the entire time, Lawler never backed down. The end came in the third round when Lawler dropped him, but didn’t pounce on him and Diaz wouldn’t get up so the referee waved it off. Diaz was holding his knee after the fight.

Peep the highlights of the fight courtesy of the UFC’s official Twitter account:

Diaz had not been seen in action since his bout with Anderson Silva in January 2015, which was later overturned to a no-contest after Silva tested positive for banned substances. Diaz also failed a drug test in relation to that fight for marijuana and was suspended 18 months by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC). Before that, he suffered losses to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 and Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158.

Lawler hadn’t been seen since last August when he got beat by Neil Magny  via decision. Before that, he lost to Colby Covington by decision at the UFC Newark event from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Ben Askren at the UFC 235 pay-per-view event.

Round 1: Nick Diaz opens up with an acrobatic kick that misses big and leaves him vulnerable on the mat. Robbie Lawler is swarming him early with a ton of strikes, many of them are finding the target. Diaz survives the initial flurry and is now working his way into this fight. Diaz rips to the body. Lawler returns with his own body shot and a couple upstairs. They are trading at the midway point of round one. Lots of volume from Diaz. Not a lot of accuracy but some are getting through. Lawler has Diaz against the fence and is unloading but Diaz returns. What a first round this is! Diaz is leaning against inviting Lawler in and then returning with some slick shots. They trade right up until the horn sounds to bring the first frame to an end.

Round 2: Lawler pushes forward early. Diaz is doing great work going back. The former UFC champ is throwing bombs and appeared to hurt his opponent with a shot to the body. Lawler wasn’t able to jump on it and Diaz is letting his hands fly once again. Round two has been all about Lawler pressing forward without really taking advantage. Diaz is piecing him up against the fence. Just as I say that Lawler lands a couple of eye-catching shots. ‘Ruthless’ is starting to take over toward the end of round two. Punches in bunches. Diaz’s output has slowed and he’s not landing as often. A body shot seemed to hurt Diaz at the end of round two and Lawler puts his foot on the gas during the end of the stanza but is unable to follow up with anything clean.

Round 3: Lawler lands big early. Diaz returns! ‘Ruthless’ lands a shot that drops Diaz to his knees. He drops to his back and Lawler walks away. The referee tells Diaz to get up but it seems he cannot continue. This fight is over!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Robbie Lawler def. Nick Diaz via TKO in round three.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC 266: Volkanovski vs. Ortega results throughout the night (Sat. 25th. September 2021) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Taking main event status at UFC 266; an undisputed featherweight championship fight between reigning division best, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski and the #2 ranked contender, Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega.

Undefeated throughout his tenure under the UFC’s banner, City Kickboxing mainstay, Volkanovski lodged his first successful defense of the featherweight title at UFC 251 in July of last year, defeating former champion and two-time opponent, Max Holloway with a close, split decision victory.

For Ortega, the Los Angeles native returned to the Octagon in the main event of UFC Fight Island 6 last October where he rebounded to the winner’s enclosure with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Chan Sung Jung.

In the night’s co-headlining bout, as part of a championship doubleheader — reigning flyweight champion, Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko looks to tie former bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey for most successful title defenses, when she clashes with the surging challenger, ‘Lucky’ Lauren Murphy.

Featuring as part of a title tripleheader at UFC 261 in April, Shevchenko managed a dominant second round knockout win over former strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade.

Undefeated in her last five outings, Alaska native, Murphy met with Joanne Calderwood at UFC 263 in June, where she edged out a close split judging win to set up her premier title challenge under the UFC’s banner.

In a featured main card bout, former welterweight title challenger, Nick Diaz makes his first Octagon appearance in six and a half years as he draws former opponent and one-time welterweight champion, ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler in a middleweight rematch, 17-years in the making.

Diaz’s last outing came against former middleweight titleholder, Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 183 in January 2015, in an eventual official ‘No Contest’ ruling.

For San Diego knockout artist, Lawler, he suffered a unanimous decision loss against Neil Magny in August of last year in a relatively short-notice bout. Initially meeting in April 2004 at UFC 47, Diaz, who made his Octagon bow that night, scored a massive one-punch second round knockout.
