UFC on ESPN+ 22 will go down tomorrow afternoon (Sat. November 16, 2019) from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the main event of the night, Jan Blachowicz welcomes Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza to the light heavyweight division.

The winner could very well be on their way to receiving a highly-ranked opponent next. We here at LowKickMMA have compiled our UFC Sao Paulo staff predictions for the Blachowicz vs. Souza main event. Check them out below.

UFC Sao Paulo Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

It hasn’t worked well for middleweights jumping up to light heavyweight as of late. Souza, of course, brings a very different dynamic to the division with his ground game.

But he has to get the fight there first. Blachowicz has looked phenomenal as of late and comes off a knockout win over Luke Rockhold. I think Blachowicz might be just strong enough to prevent the fight from going to the ground, and will outclass Souza on the feet. (Prediction: Jan Blachowicz)

Abhinav Kini:

This is a tough one to call. Given the performances of Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman at light heavyweight, I’m a bit wary about picking a middleweight making the move up. Jan Blachowicz has improved tremendously in recent years as well. But I still have Jacare Souza edging this, particularly if he can get the bigger Blachowicz on the ground. (Prediction: Jacare Souza)

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza knows he must perform before opening his mouth ahead of his light heavyweight debut.

Souza meets Jan Blachowicz in the UFC Sao Paulo headliner on Saturday. He will be the latest middleweight to make the move up to 205 in the process.

And while names like Thiago Santos and Anthony Smith have excelled in the new weight class, bigger names like former champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman both had rude awakenings in their light heavyweight debuts.

Rockhold, in particular, spoke a big game as he was looking past Blachowicz. In the end, he was knocked out by the Pole in their UFC 239 matchup. Souza does not plan on making the same mistake:

“That fight showed me that I have to go there and do a good job instead of talking too much,” Souza told MMA Fighting. “You can’t talk too much before things actually happen.

“(Rockhold) was talking about (Thiago) ‘Marreta’ (Santos) – ‘Marreta’ has done an excellent job at light heavyweight – and he was talking like (Santos) was nothing. He talked too much, and then that happened.”

If Souza can get the win against Blachowicz, he could potentially fast-track himself into a title shot against Jon Jones. It won’t be easy, though, as his foe is bigger than him and a natural light heavyweight.

However, the Brazilian feels he has always fared better against bigger opponents and can surprise spectators:

“I always did great against heavier opponents when I competed in jiu-jitsu,” Souza added. “I have no problem fighting heavier guys, and it won’t be different this time. I’m in great shape, and I will surprise a lot of people. I’ll go there and do a good job.

“… I’ll definitely use more strength. He will be heavier than me, but I believe I’ll be able to surprise everyone in spectacular fashion.”

How do you think Souza does in his 205 debut?

Its been an up-and-down past few years for longtime UFC veteran Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Souza hasn’t put together a win streak since early 2017 and has split his past six fights. In his last outing, Souza was defeated by rising 185-pound star Jack Hermansson via unanimous decision back in April. After pondering retirement, Souza will jump up to 205 pounds to face Jan Blachowicz at UFC Sao Paulo.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Souza opened up on how mental health issues led to him nearly retiring.

“Man, I was thinking about stopping (fighting). I had a psychological problem, I was burned out. I would drive to the gym and cry in the car and say, ‘Man, what am I doing going to the gym?’ My wife found a psychologist for me, I’m working on that once a week, and that has helped me a lot.

“I’m super happy with the opportunity of going back to fighting, I’m happy and excited and training like never before. There are a lot of good things happening in my life. Three months ago, I was crying on my way to the gym, tears would come out of my eyes and I didn’t know why. ‘What am I doing, man? I’ll stop fighting, I don’t want this for my life.’ And all of a sudden things were new again.

“I have the opportunity to headline a card, I’m excited again, I’m training, you know? ‘Dede’ Pederneiras has been phenomenal, he’s helped me a lot as well. I have no words for him. I already admired him before and now that we’re working together I admire him even more.”

Blachowicz comes off of a second-round knockout win over former 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold. There was some talk that he could be next in line for Jon Jones, but now, he’ll welcome Souza, one of the most dangerous grapplers in MMA history, to the light heavyweight division.

The UFC’s return to Sao Paulo, Brazil will feature the light heavyweight debut of Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza as he takes on Jan Blachowicz in the headliner.

The news was announced by UFC president Dana White (via ESPN). The Fight Night event takes place November 16 at the Ginasio do Ibirapuera arena.

Souza is coming off a decision defeat to Jack Hermansson earlier this year. There was talk of him retiring afterwards, especially as he missed out on another title shot. However, those rumors were quickly quashed by his team. Instead, he will now make the move up to 205 pounds in search of UFC gold. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt is 2-3 in his last five fights at middleweight.

As for Blachowicz, he has won five of his last six outings and most recently knocked out former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. He was expected to challenge Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title next but instead will welcome another former 185er in Souza to the division.

There is no update on what this means for Jones and his next fight but it certainly makes things interesting.

What do you think of Souza moving up? Do you think he’ll fare well against Blachowicz?
