Yoel Romero pulled from his scheduled bout that would’ve served as the headliner of the upcoming UFC Fort Lauderdale event.

The title contender was supposed to fight Jacare Souza for a second time. However, that fight has been nixed due to an illness by Romero. Romero’s illness was first reported by Brazilian media outlet AgFight and later confirmed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

As of this writing, there’s no word yet on if Souza will remain on the card, but it was noted that the UFC is actively seeking a new main event for the card. Romero defeated Souza at the UFC 194 pay-per-view event via split decision in their first fight.

It was added that the UFC “approached other fighters about putting together a headliner that doesn’t include Souza because marquee options are limited for the Brazilian.”

Romero hasn’t been seen inside of the Octagon since his fight against UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in the main event of June’s UFC 225 pay-per-view event from Chicago, Illinois. This is where fight fan fans saw him lose to the UFC champion by decision.

UFC Fort Lauderdale is set to take place on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at BB&T Center in Florida. The main card will air on ESPN. The preliminary card will be split broadcasted on ESPN and the TV network’s streaming service, ESPN +. Here’s the updated card for the show:

TBA vs. Ronaldo Souza

Greg Hardy vs. Dmitrii Smoliakov

Glover Teixeira vs. Ion Cu?elaba

Carla Esparza vs. Lívia Renata Souza

Andrei Arlovski vs. Augusto Sakai

Ronaldo Souza not impressed by the way that rising prospect Israel Adesanya made it to a title shot.

The promotion has already booked Adesanya fighting Kelvin Gastelum for the interim UFC middleweight title in the co-main event of UFC 236. For Souza, who has been a title contender for years now, has made his stance on the young buck known.

In his mind, the performance that led Adesanya to a title shot is not impressive. It should be noted that before this UFC 236 fight was announced, Souza was targeting a fight with Gastelum.

Souza explained why he feels Adesanya doesn’t deserve his title opportunity during a recent appearance on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani MMA Show.

”I don’t know why the UFC put him to fight for the title,” Souza stated (via MMAMania.com). “He hasn’t done enough. Because he never fought against top fighters, you know? Okay, he beat Derek Brunson, but I’m a jiu-jitsu fighter and I beat Derek Brunson twice. And the second time, when I kicked the Derek Brunson’s head, my eyes were closed. I did better than him twice, and in the second time my eyes were closed. Why the UFC put this guy to cut my line? I don’t know. But he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title. He don’t deserve, 100 percent. Anderson is out of the rank and out of shape. He doesn’t deserve it.”

Souza is set to fight Yoel Romero in a rematch on April 27 at UFC on ESPN 3.

Ronaldo Souza willing to retirement from the sport of MMA if he doesn’t get a title shot with a win in his next fight.

“Jacare” is slated to meet Yoel Romero in the main event of UFC on ESPN 3 (also known as UFC Miami). In his mind of the longtime MMA star, he thinks that he has to win this fight and then wait for the UFC decide what they will do.

If he doesn’t get what he wants, then he’s more than happy to retire from fighting in order to open a jiu-jitsu school. Souza elaborated on his mindset during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani MMA Show (via MMA Mania).

”I wanna sit and wait for my shot, for my chance,” Souza said. “If UFC doesn’t give me the chance, I’m going to open a jiu-jitsu school for me. I don’t have a problem with retiring.

“Right now my body is good, my hormone is great, everything is good. I don’t have a problem with this. I’d be retiring to my jiu-jitsu on top. So I have to win this fight and wait on the UFC.”

Souza is coming off a third-round knockout victory over former UFC middleweight king Chris Weidman at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden. Before that, he suffered a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May 2018 and is 3-2 in his last five bouts.

UFC on ESPN 3 is set to take place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. The main card will air on ESPN. The preliminary card will be split broadcasted on ESPN and the TV network’s streaming service, ESPN +.
