Ronaldo Souza Sounds Off On Seeing Chris Weidman Fight At UFC 230 As Rematch

Ronaldo Souza explains his mindset preparing for this co-main event fight.

Ronaldo Souza sounds off on the reason that he sees his upcoming fight against Chris Weidman in a middleweight bout as a rematch. This will serve as the co-headliner of the UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

Souza went on record in a recent interview by saying that Weidman has beaten several Brazilians over the past seven years. This adds a personal factor come fight night. This includes the likes of Anderson Silva (twice), Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, and Demian Maia. As a result, not only does he think a win here gets some revenge on Weidman. But it also gets him closes to a title shot.

“I have huge respect for Chris Weidman. I like him as a person and as an athlete, but I see it as a rematch. I feel like he had already defeated me before,” Souza told MMA Fighting. “He has defeated many (Brazilians). I’m going there like if he had defeated me as well. I never lose twice to the same person, so I’m very confident.”

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.

“It’s something natural for me,” Souza said. “Whoever wins will be up there. That’s a fact and I don’t even need to talk too much about it. I want to go up (in the ranking). I want to get in there, win — and win convincingly. Then say ‘brother, I’ll sit down and only call me if you’re going to talk about the belt.’

Souza is coming off a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May. He is looking to get back to his winning ways after going 2-2 in his last four fights.

“Everyone else is injured, there’s no one else to fight. My focus is on this fight (with Weidman), of course, but everybody knows that this fight will take me up there.”

Souza had been on the cusp of a UFC title shot. But suffered a TKO loss to current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in last April, which caused the rollercoaster ride that he’s been on since.

“My fight with Kelvin Gastelum was close, I could have gotten the win,” Souza said. “My body language was weird in the third round and could have mattered for the judges. I understand that, but I landed more strikes. I beat (Yoel) Romero. Every time my fight is close, I lose. I have to go there and win, and win for real. I can’t just kind of win.”

Ronaldo Souza Returns Against Former WSOF Champion At UFC 230

Ronaldo Souza has his next fight booked.

Ronaldo Souza is slated to make his return soon to the Octagon under the UFC banner according to a recent report.

This comes off the fact that Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com is reporting that the Las Vegas-based promotion is working on the first fight for their upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event in November, which historically has been one of the bigger events of the year for the promotion.

Their first event at the arena saw Conor McGregor finish Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title at UFC 205 PPV in 2016 while last year, UFC 217 featured the return of former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre as he made the walk back to the Octagon where he beat Michael Bisping to win the middleweight strap.

Moving along to the report, the promotion is working on an intriguing middleweight fight between Souza and former World Series Of Fighting middleweight and light heavyweight champion David Branch as the two fighters have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 230.

Souza (25-6, 1 NC), who is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion, is coming off a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May and is looking to get back to his winning ways after going 2-2 in his last four fights.

Typically, the older a fighter gets then the closer he gets to end of his career but in Souza’s position, that’s not the case and at 38-years-old, he’s near the top of the middleweight division right now and could be considered a title contender as Souza had been on the cusp of a UFC title shot but suffered a TKO loss to current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in his bout last April.

On the flip side, Branch (22-4) most recently knocked out Thiago Santos in the first round in April after suffering a submission loss to former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold last September.

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

As of this writing, no other bouts have been confirmed for this upcoming show, but the promotion is expected to announce fights in the coming weeks.

UFC Rankings Update: Yair Rodriguez Removed From Featherweight

Yair Rodriguez has been stricken from the UFC rankings, but another rising star debuted:

The post UFC Rankings Update: Yair Rodriguez Removed From Featherweight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The UFC released some shocking info last week when news arrived that formerly hyped featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez had been released from the promotion.

The story was that the flashy ‘Pantera,’ once viewed as one of the promotion’s brightest rising stars, refused to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov and Ricardo Lamas after word came that he would be facing the former at August 4’s expanding UFC 227 pay-per-view from Los Angeles, Calif.

UFC President Dana White wasted little time in releasing the skilled but absent Rodriguez as he focused on the once-hyped talent’s lengthy layoff and refusal to fight:

“The guy’s off a year, rejects a fight with Lamas and then doesn’t want to fight a guy below him in the rankings?” White said. “He can go somewhere else. We have no use for him. He calls that fight fake news. This is real news.”

While it was thought that the pending release was perhaps a tactic to get Rodriguez to accept the fight, apparently it’s very real as Rodriguez has been removed from his No. 11 spot on the UFC rankings in the latest update. His removal allowed Mirsad Bektic and Magomedsharipov to rise up a spot each and boosted Myles Jury by two spots.

In other prominent rankings movement, surging middleweight Kelvin Gastelum moved up a spot to No. 4 for his close split decision win over Ronaldo Souza at last weekend’s UFC 224 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dropping ‘Jacare’ three spots in the process.

Mackenzie Dern also made her debut on the women’s strawweight rankings despite missing weight for the division by an egregious seven pounds for her UFC 224 match-up with Amanda Bobby Cooper, which she eventually won by first-round submission.

While it’s definitely an accomplishment for Dern to debut on the rankings after two UFC bouts, the promotion has reportedly already said she will be forced to move up to women’s flyweight for her next bout, making her presence on the strawweight ranks a bit pointless until she proves she can make weight.

Jacare Implies Difficult Weight Cut Impacted UFC 224 Performance

“Jacare” Souza recently shed some light on what went wrong at UFC 224…

The post Jacare Implies Difficult Weight Cut Impacted UFC 224 Performance appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza returned to action this past weekend (May 12, 2018) in his native Brazil, taking on Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event of UFC 224, which took place at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The fight, which held major implications in the 185-pound division, was a back-and-forth one, but Souza came up short, dropping a split-decision loss to Gastelum. And although the contest was close, “Jacare” blamed the performance solely on himself:

“Nobody likes to lose,” Souza told MMAFighting through a translator. “I’m at home, I’m here in Brazil. The whole crowd was behind me. I’m very, very sad to lose. It’s disappointing to me to lose here at home in the way that I lost. I should’ve done better. I should’ve cut weight better. I felt my legs and that made it very complicated.

“It was my fault I lost, it happens. Kelvin had a good game plan, he was doing well in the fight, we had a great fight, but I lost. And I want everyone to know that I did everything I could to win. I really wanted to win this fight.”

As far as the weight cut goes, Souza said that he typically cuts weight well, but also that various circumstances led to a bit of an unusual method of cutting for him:

“I’m very healthy. I always cut weight pretty well, but this time I jumped rope a bit too much because there was no sauna in the hotel,” Souza said. “So I jumped too much rope and that’s why I think I felt my legs because of that, but that was it. There are things that happen. We had a great fight and that’s what matters.”

At 38 years old, Souza’s best days could potentially be behind him, but he confirmed that he will continue to compete in the middleweight division:

“About my future, I’m in the middleweight division, I’m gonna wait for the next fight, and I’m gonna do everything I can to win,” Souza said. “I’m going to see with my trainers what happened, what happened wrong, because I felt my legs a lot and I think that’s what complicated the fight.”

Who would you like to see the Brazilian fight next?
