Cris Cyborg Calls Out Ronda Rousey For Madison Square Garden Fight

Bulldozing 145-pound Invicta FC champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino finally made her long-awaited Octagon debut on the main card of last night’s (May 14, 2016) UFC 198 from her home of Curitiba, Brazil. Bulldozing 145-pound Invicta FC champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino finally made her long-awaited Octagon debut on the main card of last night’s (May 14, 2016) UFC 198 from her home of Curitiba, Brazil.

Justino has long been considered to be one of the most feared female fighters on the planet, and she showed why last night when she demolished Leslie Smith in just over a minute in their 140-pound catch weight bout.

“Cyborg” has always been linked to a potential super fight with previously dominant bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, but the weight discrepancy along with the fact that Justino wasn’t signed with the UFC had always prevented that.

Now with one of the two barriers out of the way, and the weight appearing to be less of an issue, the fight may become more of a reality, although “Cyborg” opted not to call the “Rowdy” one out last night:

“I believe it was my moment. Tonight was my moment, it was historic.” Cyborg told FOX Sports. “I never thought I’d be sitting here tonight. I never thought I’d be here after everything I went through and it’s a historic moment for me. Talking about her is something that people are going to talk about, but I let my fans decide on who my opponent will be and I just have to be ready.”

Touching on the weight, Justino admitted that she felt strong last night, but also revealed that she’d like to continue to defend her Invicta strap:

“I’ve been training for two years to be able to make weight yesterday. And I felt very well tonight and I believe I can do other superfights, but I’m going to continue my weight class,” she said. “I’ve been the champion for some time and I want female MMA to grow, and I don’t think it’s the right thing for me to abandon my weight class.”

Less than 24 hours after her first UFC victory, it appears as if “Cyborg” has enjoyed her moment enough, taking to her official Twitter account to call out Rousey for a potential fight at UFC 205 this November in New York:

Rousey has been out of action since shockingly being knocked out by Holly Holm last November, and it’s expected that she’ll return at Madison Square Garden, although likely in a title fight.

Could you see the UFC booking Rousey vs. “Cyborg”?

“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey has transcended the sport of mixed martial arts like few other, reaching different platforms and different audiences throughout the world with not only her fighting, but her modeling and acting as well.

Of course, however, the majority of her multi-media opportunities came from her fighting, and it was all well-deserved to say the least.

When UFC President Dana White implemented the women’s bantamweight division in 2013, Rousey was handed the inaugural championship belt, and she went on to run a demolition course through the division, defending her strap six consecutive times with six straight finishes.

Then came her sudden fall from grace when she was shockingly knocked out by Holly Holm last November. The “Rowdy” one hasn’t competed since, and she’s remained relatively quiet in the media, although still filming movies.

It appears as if she’ll return to fighting sometime this upcoming fall, and as it now looks, her acting career will continue to grow as well.

According to Deadline, Rousey has signed a three-film deal with Lifetime as a catalyst to spearhead their ‘female empowerment’ movement.

The report also implied that Rousey will participate in films bringing “stories that reflect her passions about empowerment to the screen”.

Some have said that Rousey’s downfall in the Octagon came from doing too much media, and too much promoting.

Is this new deal smart of Rousey, or should she put her sole focus on reclaiming her title?

Cyborg: Ronda Rousey Knew It Was Impossible For Me To Make 135

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino is finally set to make her UFC debut in a catchweight bout against Leslie Smith at May 14’s UFC 198 from Curitiba, Brazil.

Although it won’t be the long sought upon super fight with former bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey, it is a good sign to see the Brazilian slugger finally make her way over to the Octagon.

One thing to note, however, is that the UFC doesn’t have a featherweight division for female fighters. With that being said, Justino will likely have to continuously fight at catchweights, or find some way to cut down to the 135 pound limit.

While some fighters, including reigning UFC champion Miesha Tate, have expressed their willingness to fight “Cyborg” at a catchweight, Rousey has never seemed to budge.

Recently speaking on the matter, Justino admitted that a fighter can’t be pushed into a fight, although she is hopeful that Rousey will accept a bout at 140 pounds with her upon the “Rowdy” one’s return:

“You know, you can’t push a fighter into a fight, it’s better for them to compete because they want to challenge themselves. I like to challenge myself. I’m an MMA world champ, but I fought the Muay Thai world champ because I like to challenge myself. Maybe I’ll lose, maybe I’ll win, but I’ll be getting better.”

“I think when Ronda comes back to fight, all of the fans want to watch me fight her. She has talked about me in the past, she has pushed the idea of this fight, but after that said I had to make 135lbs to fight her, because she knew it was impossible for me. Now I’m in a 140lbs catchweight division, so if she wants to challenge herself and not just talk, we can make the fight happen.” Justino told Bloody Elbow.

As far as Tate and Holly Holm, another former UFC champion, go, “Cyborg” respects them all, but once again admits that she can’t make these highly intriguing bouts happen herself:

“I respect Holly Holm. She’s a great fighter and she has had big changes in her life now. She’s a good person. Miesha Tate is a good person too. I’m here to fight anyone, but fighters either want to challenge themselves or not, and I can’t change that. I can only control myself and challenge myself, so I just have to focus on May 14th, making 140lbs and fighting Leslie Smith.”

What do you expect from “Cyborg’s” future in the UFC?

After many unsuccessful attempts over the years, the UFC finally got what they’ve been pushing for when mixed martial arts was legalized in New York last month.

To make matters even more realistic, Governor Andrew Cuomo officially signed the bill today (April 14, 2016), and the UFC has announced its inaugural show at the legendary Madison Square Garden for November 12, 2016.

The event will serve as UFC 205.

As far as who may compete on the card, or rather who may headline it, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta told MMAFighting.com that former bantamweight queen and global superstar “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey could make her much anticipated return in New York:

“It’s certainly a possibility (Ronda Rousey is on the card).” Fertitta said. “Nothing has been determined yet. We’ll kind of see what happens. I can tell you that whatever card we do bring, it will be massive. It’ll be a big card with our biggest names.”

Rousey has been out of action since a shocking knockout loss to Holly Holm at last November’s UFC 193 from Australia. A return date has not yet been confirmed for the “Rowdy” one, but UFC President Dana White has previously stated that next Fall would likely be an ideal timeframe, making UFC 205 a real possibility.

Whether or not Rousey will headline the card is obviously still up in the air, but Fertitta did confirm that the card will play host to at least one title fight:

“Yes, I would say that that (a title fight) will happen.”

Who would you like to fight when the UFC finally heads to the Empire State next November?

Ronda Rousey Planning ‘World Domination’ In Return

Although we still don’t have a date nor an event for Ronda Rousey’s highly anticipated return, we do now have an idea of when it may take place.

UFC president Dana White recently confirmed that the previously dominant bantamweight queen will be returning to action sometime next fall, perhaps in November.

After suffering a shocking and brutal knockout loss to Holly Holm at last November’s UFC 193, it’s understandable that Rousey, being the global superstar she is, needed some time away from the spotlight.

Now having spent nearly five months away from the cage, the “Rowdy” one is apparently planning her triumphant return, or as her nutrition coach Mike Dolce put it, her return to ‘world domination’:

“We’re planning Ronda’s comeback and her world domination,” Dolce told MMAJunkie. “That’s really what it’s about. The last loss Ronda suffered was in the 2008 Olympics, where she battled back and won a bronze medal. She has been undefeated since, all the way to November 2015.”

After running a demolition course through everything put in her path, and looking invincible and unbeatable, it was simply jaw dropping to see Rousey put away last at UFC 193.

However, the fight may have clearly pin pointed some drastic holes in her game, holes we had never necessarily seen.

With that being said, Dolce claims that not only Rousey, but her team as well is completely ‘refocused’:

“She’s extremely refocused, and the team is definitely moving forward,” Dolce said. “We’re all rowing in the right direction, and now it’s just a matter of sitting back and waiting for the right time for her to step back in again.”

After her sudden fall from grace, does Rousey have what it takes to recapture the title she’s held for the last few years?

Or, on the flip side, have we seen the end of one of the sport’s most transcendent stars?

Dana White Hints At Big Miesha Tate Fight For UFC 200…

July 9’s monumental UFC 200 event from Las Vegas received two huge fights last night (March 30, 2016).

It was announced that Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor II will serve as the main event, while former 145-pound king Jose Aldo will meet top contender and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight title.

Despite the magnitude of those two fights alone, the card obviously still needs some filling out, and UFC president Dana White recently said that fans should expect to see a few women’s bouts tossed in:

“You should expect a couple. There will be a couple women’s fights at UFC 200,” White said on “SportsCenter.” “Actually, two or three maybe.”

As far as female fights go, perhaps the largest involve newly minted 135-pound title holder Miesha “Cup Cake” Tate.

Tate was able to pull off a spectacular rear naked choke victory over former champion Holly Holm earlier this month at March 5’s UFC 196.

That outcome immediately set up an intriguing Tate vs. Holm rematch, but it’s widely assumed that “Cup Cake” will next defend her title in a trilogy bout with former dominant champion Ronda Rousey.

It’s currently unclear when Rousey is aiming to return after suffering a brutal knockout loss to Holm last November, but either of these bouts would be massive.

Will Tate be competing at UFC 200, however? White left it open as a possibility:

“Could be,” White said with a laugh.

Former title challenger Cat Zingano recently hinted at an ‘epic’ summer return fight as well, and Cris “Cyborg” Justino could potentially make a quick turnaround given that her long awaited Octagon debut at May 14’s UFC 198 goes as planned.

Which female fighters would you like to see at UFC 200?
