After a long and rigorous battle that has spanned many unnecessary years, mixed martial arts has finally been legalized in the state of New York.

Assembly Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle announced yesterday (March 22, 2016) the passing of the bill to legalize the sport in the Empire State, an announcement beneficial to all major MMA promotions, but specifically the UFC, which has heavily pushed for the passing of the bill since 2007.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta has already confirmed that the promotion is looking to bring an event to New York before the close of 2016.

While he couldn’t confirm that the first appearance would be at New York’s infamous Madison Square Garden, he did say that when the UFC does indeed come to MSG, it will be massive.

With that being said, let’s take a look at some possible headliners for the UFC’s MSG Debut:

Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans waiting for former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s return will unfortunately have to wait even longer.

After the previously dominant champ was knocked by Holly Holm at UFC 193, the general consensus was that “Rowdy” would return at the UFC’s July blockbuster UFC 200 to rematch Holm in an attempt to get her belt back. But when her featured role in the upcoming remake of “Road House” got in the way, Rousey’s comeback was delayed until late this year, and not many argued with that given the destructive nature of her loss.

That return has been pushed back even further, however, as Rousey revealed on a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon (via FOX Sports) that “Road House’s” filming has been delayed further, which in turn will delay her availability to fight. Rousey said that the film will “hopefully” now start filming this May, adding that she made a commitment to the project and will follow through on her word:

“Hopefully we’ll start around May. We’ll see. I promised that I would film “Road House” after the last fight,” Rousey said. “I made a promise and that’s it. My word means something so I’m going to go film “Road House” first.”

It’s clear that Rousey’s film career is burgeoning, with this role and the opcoming “Mile 22” with Mark Wahlberg in addition to her coined catchphrase “Do Nothing B*****s” with Tina Fey on the docket this year. Dana White has said that Rousey will most likely return around November, but if “Road House” doesn’t start filming until May or beyond, that would leave hardly enough of a timeframe to prepare for the toughest challenge of her career against the ultra-dangerous champ Holm.

Still, with Rousey declaring that she considered suicide in the aftermath of her knockout loss to “The Preacher’s Daughter,” perhaps some more time off is what’s best for Rousey, who is obviously still MMA’s biggest star.

However, her recent emotional statement coupled with her return being pushed back further and further is certainly cause for wonder and speculation to her ability to win back the belt, if she returns to fighting at all. Rousey assured fans that she would, however:

“Of course (there will be a rematch).”

Cris Cyborg Backs Ronda Rousey: She’s Been Good For Women’s MMA

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino has never had a nice word to say about former UFC bantamweight queen “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey.

The two have long been considered to be the top two female fighters on the planet, with a super fight always being discussed, but never quite coming to fruition. That idea has been put on the back burner as of now, however.

Heading into her UFC 193 (November 14, 2015) bout with Holly Holm, Rousey was a massive favorite as usual which is why fans were shocked when the “Rowdy” one was knocked out cold in the second round.

In the aftermath of such a brutal loss, Rousey has received an endless amount of negative backlash from fans, something “Cyborg” feels terrible about:

“It’s terrible,” said Cyborg, who will defend her Invicta FC featherweight title against Daria Ibragimova here Saturday night in the Invicta FC 15 main event. “When you’re there, every body is with you. I feel sorry about this. I know this, because before something happened in my career — the doping — and before everybody is with you [and then they’re not]. But I love my fans. Some fans kept with me and I’m sure she has that, too. It’s sad, but sometimes it’s good so you can see who’s with you. You can see who you really have to appreciate.” Justino told MMAFighting.

Continuing on, the Brazilian slugger admitted that she feels for the “Rowdy” one, as “Cyborg” knows the hurt feeling very well:

“This is not nice,” Cyborg said. “Losing a fight, winning — it happens. But these people make fun. … I know it’s not nice. I know she hurts now and I know depression.”

Much of the backlash towards Rousey has undoubtedly been due to the former champion’s notorious arrogance and cockiness so to say leading up to her fights. Touching on this, “Cyborg” said that losing is not the problem, but rather the talking:

“Always you can lose,” Cyborg said. “You can lose, you can win. It’s not embarrassing. It’s embarrassing when you speak before you fight. It’s embarrassing speaking bad. I think you have to work hard on what you say, because if you lose, when you come back from the airport you have to have a pillow on your face.”

Remaining relatively quiet regarding the media since her loss, Rousey’s future is currently unclear. It was thought that she would return at July’s UFC 200, but it was recently reported that she would need more time off, although it’s still thought that she will return at some point.

Despite their bitter rivalry, Justino hopes to see the “Rowdy” one back in action at some point, noting all she’s done for woman’s MMA:

“I think she’d like to use this to challenge herself and get better,” Cyborg said. “To come in and change. Something bad in life has to happen before you change and grow. I can’t say anything bad about her. She’s been good for women’s MMA. She opened a lot of doors. I know I [fought] before her, but she had opportunities and she’s handled it and helped everybody.”

Will Rousey compete again, and will the paths of these two female pioneers ever cross?
