Dakota Ditcheva compared to Ronda Rousey: 'She has the potential to be a superstar'

Unbeaten Manchester striker, Dakota Ditcheva has drawn massive comparisons to former undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey — with the Muay Thai star on the track to stardom according to PFL (Professional Fighters League) commentator, Sean O’Connell.

Ditcheva, who featured just earlier this month the PFL flyweight tournament semi finals, booked a finale bout with an impressive first round front kick and strikes knockout win over Jena Bishop in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Sale native improved to 13-0 as a professional with the victory — and awaits Octagon veteran, Taila Santos in the finale of the flyweight tournament under the banner of the PFL later this annum — having landed in the SmartCage just two years ago.

Landing stoppages in each of her subsequent seven victories — including six knockout wins and a separate rear-naked choke submission success, Ditcheva is on the fast track to stardom according to another UFC alum, O’Connell — who compared her to inaugural bantamweight queen, Rousey.

“She (Dakota Ditcheva) has the potential to be a superstar but not for the same reasons as Ronda Rousey,” Sean O’Connell told talkSPORT. “Ronda was the pioneer, Ronda was the one that broke the barrier and got women into the UFC and unfortunately, that’s a milestone that can never be reached again even for someone with the star calibre of Dakota Ditcheva. You could make the argument that it’s going to be harder for Dakota to reach those heights of celebrity but she absolutely is capable of it.”

“First of all, because of how incredible she is as a fighter but also, she understands the media game, right?” O’Connell explained. “She knows exactly when to switch off that savage and become the sweetheart again. She’s got the look, she’s got the charisma and when you have that plus the ability to knock women out like she does, the sky is the limit.”

Ronda Rousey Apologizes for Controversial Sandy Hook Tweet: ‘I deserve to be hated'

More than a decade later, Ronda Rousey is apologizing for sharing a controversial conspiracy video claiming that the Sandy Hook massacre was staged.

The shooting incident occurred on December 14, 2012, when Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and opened fire, killing 20 children and six staff members. Following the incident, conspiracy theories about the shooting ran rampant, many of them perpetuated by disgraced political commentator and former InfoWars host Alex Jones.

A month after the shooting, Rousey shared a YouTube video on X (formerly Twitter) that perpetuated claims that the entire incident was a work of fiction. The post included a caption from Rousey: “Extremely interesting, and must-watch.”

Rousey was immediately hit with outrage prompting her to delete the video quickly. While mainstream media failed to pick up the story, the incident was addressed by UFC CEO Dana White at a press event in March 2013. White unsurprisingly came to Rousey’s defense saying that “everybody has an opinion” and suggesting that the bigger problem was that “people are f*cking p*ssies.”

The whole thing was seemingly forgotten until recently when Rousey engaged in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). The MMA icon was immediately inundated with scathing questions about her past comments related to the massacre.

Ronda Rousey Will Regret Sharing Sandy Hook video ‘Until the day i die’

Shortly after, Rousey took to X and issued a lengthy statement apologizing for the 11-year-old post.

“I didn’t even believe it, [the conspiracy video] but was so horrified at the truth that I was grasping for an alternative fiction to cling to instead. I quickly realized my mistake and took it down, but the damage was done.

“By some miracle it seemingly slipped under the media’s radar, I was never asked about it so I never spoke of it again, afraid that calling attention to it would have the opposite of the intended effect — it could increase the views of those conspiracy videos, and selfishly, inform even more people I was ignorant, self absorbed, and tone deaf enough to share one in the first place.”

Rousey added that she’ll regret the decision to share the video “until the day I die.”

“I deserve to be hated, labeled, detested, resented, and worse for it. I deserve to lose out on every opportunity, I should have been canceled, I would have deserved it. I still do. I apologize that this came 11 years too late, but to those affected by the Sandy Hook massacre, from the bottom of my heart and depth of my soul I am so so sorry for the hurt I caused.”

Rousey also revealed that she had drafted an apology to include in her latest memoir, but “my publisher begged me to take it out, saying it would overshadow everything else and do more harm than good.”

Ronda Rousey will always be a massive part of the history of MMA and whilst she was a pioneer in many ways, no female fighter has been able to reach that same level of star power.

There have been many athletes that come along with elements of star potential but the PFL’s Dakota Ditcheva appears to have everything.

It was clear that she had a special quality about her when talking to the media but of course, none of that matters if you can’t back it up in the cage.

Despite detractors regarding her quality of opponents, Ditcheva has beaten everyone that the PFL has put in front of her to go from winning the PFL Europe tournament last year to advancing to the finals of the regular season this year, where she will take on former UFC title challenger Taila Santos in a must-see bout.

Sean O’Connell Says Dakota Ditcheva Has Everything She Needs To Be A Huge Star

Ditcheva appeared on stage moments before the press conference for Francis Ngannou’s PFL debut, where she was joined by Jake Paul who compared her to Rousey.

PFL commentator Sean O’Connell believes that whilst she might be doing it in a different way, he can understand the comparisons between the former face of women’s MMA and one of the most exciting contenders around right now.

He spoke in an interview with TalkSPORT about how Ditcheva has the world at her feet because she ticks every box to become a huge star.

“She has the potential to be a superstar but not for the same reasons as Ronda Rousey. Ronda was the pioneer, Ronda was the one that broke the barrier and got women into the UFC and unfortunately, that’s a milestone that can never be reached again even for someone with the star caliber of Dakota Ditcheva. Ronda Rousey Calls Out Steroid-Pumped Cris Cyborg

Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey was a megastar in the world of MMA huge huge mainstream crossover appeal. The became the face of the UFC. Rousey is also the reason the UFC started allowing women’s fights at all. In this interview, she reflects on saving women’s MMA and slams all-time great Cris Cyborg.

Ronda Rousey on Women’s MMA

Ronda Rousey was an Olympic medalist and then began competing in MMA in Strikeforce. There, she was celebrated for her trash talk and feud against Miesha Tate. Zuffa, the owning company of the UFC, bought Strikeforce so Rousey made sure to get women into the UFC. Even Dana White admitted that they would never have started the women’s fighting division if it wasn’t for ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey.

Ronda Rousey admits she never evolved during UFC career I was being everything to everyone

Prior to Rousey’s run, the biggest names in women’s MMA were Cris Cyborg and Gina Carano who fought on network TV under Strikeforce. The Brazilian fighter has picked up titles in Invicta, Strikeforce, Bellator, and the UFC, among others. Despite being a trailblazer and an all-time great, Ronda Rousey has no love for Cris Cyborg.

Speaking in an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Rousey explained:

“People forget how fragile that situation was and how last-minute I was able to get us in. Strikeforce was the only organization that was really showcasing women and that was because of Gina Carano, because her dad was involved with the Nevada Athletic Commission and was able to sanction fights for her and all these things.”

Speaking on Cris Cyborg, she said:

“When she was gone, Cris Cyborg’s pumped to the f*cking gills with steroids. No one wants to watch that cheating ass bitch. Everything just tanked. The division was dying. The UFC bought Strikeforce and it was assumed they were just going to absorb all of the male talent that they liked and fold the whole organization, because that’s what they did with PRIDE, that’s what they did with WEC, that was their business model. So there was a matter of time.”

Rousey added:

“It was just a matter of time before they closed the whole thing and there would be nowhere that would showcase women’s MMA, so I had that much time to make sure that Dana [White] couldn’t go a single day without seeing my name somewhere. The rest is history.” [Ht MMAFighting]

Ronda Rousey was able to create a massive amount of attention for women’s MMA with her impressive and quick wins in the UFC. She has since MMA and began competing in WWE professional wrestling.

Ronda Rousey: "I'm F***ing Breaking the next B****es arm" - Recalls When She Started Snapping Limbs

Ronda Rousey showed mercy once. Then never again.

Rousey exited the MMA game in 2016 after suffering back-to-back knockout losses against Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Before that, she was one of the most exciting attractions the sport had ever seen, scoring 12 straight wins including nine victories by way of her signature maneuver, the armbar.

Ronda Rousey

Looking back at one of her earliest bouts on the Strikeforce Challengers series, Rousey recalled a time when she held back from breaking someone’s arm in a fight and why she vowed to never offer that same courtesy to any of her opponents again.

“The 25-second fight is when I fought Sarah D’Alelio,” Rousey said in a short on her YouTube channel. “So as we were falling down she was screaming, ‘tap, tap, tap,’ because as soon as I hit the ground that girl’s elbow was going to go out. There was no way I could control it so I let go of it. I held the position and I’m like, ‘The girl’s trying to tap.’ I told the ref and then the ref called it because obviously it was a verbal submission and she goes, ‘But I didn’t tap! I didn’t tap!’

“The whole f*cking crowd is booing me and sh*t and I was like, ‘This b*tch. That’s it, I’m never gonna be nice again. I’m f*cking breaking the next b*tches arm.’”

Ronda Rousey stayed true to her word

Four months later, Rousey did exactly that. ‘Rowdy’ dislocated Julia Budd’s arm 39 seconds into their Strikeforce Challengers 20 scrap in November 2011.

Overall, Ronda Rousey went 12-2 in her mixed martial arts career with a 100% finish rate. In addition to the assortment of arms she collected, ‘Rowdy’ also secured knockouts against Sara McMann, Alexis Davis, and Bethe Correia.

Following her exit from the Octagon in 2017, Rousey parlayed her fame and athleticism into a successful career in sports entertainment, signing with the WWE in 2018. She would go on to win the RAW women’s championship and made history as one of the first women to headline WrestleMania.

Ronda Rousey

After taking a few years away from the spotlight, she returned to win the 2022 Royal Rumble and kickstart another WWE run that would ultimately come to an end in October 2023.
