When UFC heavyweight contenders Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin square off in the main event of UFC 131, fans will be expecting fireworks.

With 13 fights on each of their records, only Dos Santos (12-1) has been the distance once in his career. Carwin (12-1) has never been the distance. They both have a combined 15 knockouts in 24 wins between them.

Carwin was a late-replacement for former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, who coached on the opposing team of the last season of the Ultimate Fighter. Santos was the other coach.

The fight card will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and it’s sure to be one exciting night of fights that should end with fireworks.

Santos is 6-0 in the UFC, and this is an overview of those fights.

Roy Nelson claims he had “walking pneumonia” going into his UFC 130 bout/loss against Frank Mir.

UFC 130 Excuse-Watch: Roy Nelson Had ‘Walking Pneumonia’

Breaking away from his usual “fat guy who can throw down” persona, Roy Nelson just looked like your garden-variety fat guy last weekend at UFC 130, wheezing through three rounds, too exhausted to do anything besides absorb blows from Frank Mir. Was it a sign that Roy should finally hook up with a nutritionist and get his BMI in order?

The obvious answer is yes, definitely. Just because you can drag around a barrel of adipose tissue around your midsection and still compete at the highest levels of MMA doesn’t make it a good idea. Nelson is literally weighing himself down in the Octagon, and putting himself at a profound competitive disadvantage; even most 205-pounders in the UFC outsize Nelson at this point. But according to a new report, there was another factor in play on Saturday that made a victory for Big Country even less likely:

But according to a new report, there was another factor in play on Saturday that made a victory for Big Country even less likely:

Via text messages with Cagewriter, Jessy Nelson said that her husband had walking pneumonia during the first two weeks of May, and that he spent Monday in a Las Vegas hospital. “He described the feeling like someone is taking a big scab off of his lungs,” Nelson wrote.

After consulting with CagePotato Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Wikipedia, we learned that atypical pneumonia, aka “walking pneumonia,” is a pneumonia not caused by one of the more traditional pathogens, and with a clinical presentation inconsistent with typical pneumonia. The infection is generally restricted to small areas of the lungs.

Roy has confirmed the diagnosis on Twitter. He also claimed that he would beat Mir in a best-of-7 series, argued that he’s still a top-5 heavyweight in the UFC (if you don’t include Lesnar), and let everybody know that he used to make more money in the IFL. Great. There’s something else Dana White can be pissed about.

Dana White Expects a New UFC TV Deal to in Place by the End of 2011

Bleacher Report’s Mike Hodges reports:

While the UFC is in negotiations with Spike TV to discuss a new television deal, UFC president Dana White said he expects the new deal to be wrapped up in the near future.

“We’re in negotiations right now, so we’re still talking,” White said during the UFC 130 post-fight press conference this past Saturday.

“Should be wrapped up in the next six months,” he added.

The UFC has developed a huge audience with Spike TV, and the hit reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” has brought the company to new heights in terms of popularity and television ratings. While Spike TV has been the home of the UFC since 2005, White said they need to explore all their options before finalizing a deal.

“We want to be with somebody we can grow with like we have with Spike. We’ve had a great relationship with Spike and done great things there, so hopefully we can figure things out,” he said.

And it looks like White is not just wasting his breath. The UFC boss said they are looking to expand their horizons, even if that means they land a deal with a major television network like NBC or CBS.

Roy Nelson’s Problem Is Not Pneumonia

According to Cagewriter, Roy Nelson was suffering from pneumonia days before his bout with Frank Mir.

There’s no reason to doubt Nelson, and if he says he had pneumonia, his word is to be believed.

That said, pneumonia is not Nelson’s problem, and I hope that he doesn’t use it as an excuse going forward.

While it’s true that pneumonia could have been a factor in his poor physical condition last weekend, that doesn’t explain how tired he looked last summer against Junior Dos Santos.

During the Dos Santos fight, Nelson was breathing heavily, dropping his hands and often staggered backwards without having been hit. That’s called being tired.

The reason he wasn’t as tired in that fight as he was against Mir is because the Mir fight last week was a far more grueling wrestling match.

If the Dos Santos fight was a wrestling match, Nelson would have looked just as exhausted, and if he ever has to fight Brock Lesnar, Nelson is going to look even more exhausted if he survives longer than a round.

While Nelson’s explanations are legitimate, this isn’t the time for excuses.

If Nelson stays fat, he’ll look fine if he’s winning and able to control the pace, and he’ll look exhausted when he’s getting wrestled, beaten up and struggling to get off his back.

Losing weight can only help with his conditioning, and any excuse that stops Nelson from losing weight is a roadblock to his possible future success as a fighter.
