Scott Coker Addresses Potentially Signing Josh Barnett

Scott Coker has addressed potentially signing Josh Barnett.

The Bellator MMA president was asked about the former UFC heavyweight champion during Tuesday’s press conference where the promotion announced their big September 29th card.

He told Danny Segura of MMAFighting.com that the promotion is already in talks with Barnett after it was revealed last week that he had departed from the UFC.

If you recall, Barnett and Coker have a history of working together as they were in business while under the Strikeforce banner. Barnett fought in Strikeforce, which Coker was president of, between 2011 and 2013 where he competed four times with a record of 3-1.

Barnett’s final bout under the promotion’s banner came back in May of 2012 when he Barnett competed in the final of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix where he was defeated by Daniel Cormier via a unanimous decision.

“Yeah we’re talking to his manager now actually and we’d love to have Josh on our roster fighting some of the heavyweights that we have and I think he’d be a good fit,” Coker said (transcript courtesy of MMANytt).

Barnett requested his release from the UFC and his contract does not carry any stipulations. Thus, this is considered a full separation from the UFC.

If you recall, the former UFC heavyweight champion failed an out-of-competition drug test stemming from a Dec. 9, 2016, screening.

The agency announced back in March that Barnett only received only a public reprimand following arbitration in his USADA doping case, which means that he will receive no suspension and can return to the Octagon right away.

His legal team was able to show the arbitrator that the ostarine came due a tainted supplement. It should be noted that Ostarine is not approved by the FDA and is illegally sold in the United States as a performance-enhancer.

Barnett is the first fighter to test positive for a performance-enhancing drug and not get any kind of suspension since the UFC partnered up with USADA back in 2015.

Barnett (35-8) has had a great 20-year-long career, and he is coming off a third-round submission of Andrei Arlovski in September of 2016. Since returning to the UFC after a stint in Strikeforce, he went 3-2.

Scott Coker Says He’s ‘Very Proud’ Of Current Bellator Roster

According to Scott Coker, the future is bright for Bellator MMA…

Over the last few years, Bellator has become quite a respectable promotion in the mixed martial arts landscape, signing some of the biggest free agents on the market and developing young fighters under the leadership of Scott Coker, who took over as the promotion’s president in 2014.

And while the level of talent in the promotion likely still plays second fiddle to that of UFC, Coker acknowledges that improvements have been made and he expects this to continue in the years to come:

“The roster looks a lot different than it was three years ago,” Coker told MMAjunkie. “I think that we put on some great fights in the last three years, but in the last 18 months… Rory MacDonald’s fight with Douglas Lima was one of my favorite fights of all-time in this company.

“We’ve had just had so many great fights, I think in the last 18 months, and it’s just gonna continue on.”

In terms of high profile free agent signings, MacDonald certainly stands out as one, although Bellator has also brought in top names like Ryan Bader and Gegard Mousasi in recent memory. In addition to those signings, however, Bellator is also home to a plethora of young fighters who could transform into big names.

Because of that, Coker is not only excited to see what the future holds, but he admits that he’s ‘very proud’ of the roster that he’s helped build:

“If you look at the roster now, it’s something I’m very proud of,” Coker continued. “But, give us another 18 months – not 18 months. Maybe another year, that’s when you’ll see Aaron Pico really flourish out. A.J. McKee, James Gallagher, the Fortunes (Tyrell and Tyree).

“These are the future of the company, and I think you’re gonna see them really blossom in the next year.”

Do you expect Bellator to continue to flourish in the coming years?

Scott Coker Believes He’ll Re-Sign “Face Of Bellator” Michael Chandler

Scott Coker is expecting to reach a new deal with Michael Chandler…

Since Scott Coker took over as the President of Bellator MMA in 2014, the promotion has gained a reputation for signing some of the biggest name free agents to hit the market. Now, however, Coker and company will have to retain one of their own.

Former lightweight champion and longtime Bellator mainstay Michael Chandler will soon hit free agency, but Coker is hoping he’ll stick around given that he’s ‘the face of Bellator’:

“He’s the face of Bellator – for such a long time,” Coker told MMAjunkie this past weekend at Bellator 199. “The performances that he’s had in the cage – even before I got here – he’s been fantastic. He has one of the greatest fights in the history of this company, with him and Eddie Alvarez.

“We talked a little bit about the deal. But I want him to be happy. If anyone deserves it, Michael deserves it.”

Chandler, who made his promotional debut at Bellator 31 in 2010, has compiled an 18-4 professional record, while going 15-4 in the Bellator cage. Most recently, he’s picked up back-to-back victories over Goiti Yamauchi and Brandon Girtz after losing the 155-pound title to Brent Primus last June in New York City.

Given his reputation as one of the best lightweights in the world, Chandler could consider making the jump to the UFC, but Coker revealed that Bellator has ‘every intent to keep him’:

“We have every intent to keep him,” said Coker, who plans to talk to Chandler this week. “I feel we’ll get a deal done. …

“I think, really, Michael wants to stay, and we want to keep him, so I don’t even think we’ll get to this point (that he talks to the UFC).”

Where do you expect Chandler to end up?
