WBC world heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder has opted to re-sign with the Showtime network rather than take his chances with DAZN.

Wilder will kick off his new deal with a fight vs. Dominic Breazeale on May 18 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

According to Fight Sports, the plan would be for Wilder to fight former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko should he defeat Breazeale on May 18. Klitschko hasn’t competed since being defeated by Anthony Joshua in late 2017.

“World heavyweight title fights belong on Showtime and not on a streaming platform with a limited audience,” Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza said at today’s press conference (h/t MMA Mania).

There’s no doubt that fans of boxing are the biggest losers of this deal. You can’t fault Wilder for making the most financially sound decision for him and his family. But for the time being anyway, a rematch with Tyson Fury and a unification bout with Anthony Joshua will have to wait.

On the bright side, boxing is as healthy as it has been in some time on paper.

Dana White Blasts Showtime Exec For UFC 223 Callout

Last night (April 7, 2018), Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Al Iaquinta in the main event of UFC 223 to become the lightweight champion. Had Iaquinta won, however, he wouldn’t have received the title due to the fact that he weighed-in at 155.2 lbs. for a bout against Paul Felder but was then called upon to take on Nurmagomedov after Max Holloway was forced to withdraw from the main event.

The scenario seemed a bit shady – at least according to Showtime Sports Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza, who took to Twitter to take a shot at the UFC:

Following these comments, UFC President Dana White responded at the UFC 223 post-fight press conference, and as expected, he didn’t hold back:

“Just to clear something up, too. I don’t want to give this guy any publicity because he loves it, but that greasy, slimy rat Espinoza talking about how ‘Oh, we break the rules’ and all the other sh-t,” White said.

“Just keep trying to be HBO and don’t worry about what the f—k we’re doing, you slimy little rat.”

White and Espinoza have previously worked together during the build-up and broadcast of last August’s boxing super fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

Conor McGregor has joined in on the drama between Dana White and Showtime Sports.

White called out Showtime this week for supposedly releasing the numbers incorrectly for McGregor’s August boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, apparently wanting them to release the worldwide figures of approximately 6.7 million buys rather than the 4.3 million North American buys released by Showtime.

The UFC frontman revealed he no longer trusted the network, and would never work with them again.

Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza insisted earlier today on social media that Showtime only revealed the facts, and White despised them for telling the truth:

However, one major part of the equation is not surprisingly siding with White and rapidly fired back at Espinoza.

McGregor, who’s currently mulling an anticipated UFC return and had a previous beef with Espinoza when Showtime was rumored to have cut his microphone off on the first leg of the Mayweather vs. McGregor world tour, called him a ‘weasel’ again and said the fight’s released numbers should have had a more global focus:

White and McGregor obviously want the biggest number possible to flaunt the bout as the biggest combat sports event of all-time, yet all numbers point to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao holding that actual title.

It appears a sore subject for both of the UFC’s most famous faces, but Mayweather vs. McGregor is long over with, and perhaps they’d be best served to shifting their focus to rebounding from a brutally down year for MMA in 2017.

Something tells me they may not, however.
