Sodiq Yusuff, Alex Caceres

UFC featherweight Alex Caceres has revealed he’s been offered a March fight against fellow ranked contender Sodiq Yusuff.

Caceres, who has been a part of MMA’s premier organization since 2011, is undoubtedly in the form of his life. After going 9-10-1 in his first 20 outings in the Octagon, things began to click for “Bruce Leeroy,” who’s found consistency and form like never before.

Since a 2019 defeat to Kron Gracie, Caceres has built an impressive five-fight win streak, the longest of his professional career. Following victories over Steven Petersen, Chase Hooper, Austin Springer, and Kevin Croom, the 33-year-old broke into the featherweight top 15 with a memorable submission triumph against Seungwoo Choi last October.

Caceres Accepts Fight Up The FW Rankings

Having entered the 145-pound ladder at #15, Alex Caceres will be hoping to begin his 2022 by climbing further towards the featherweight elite. It appears he could have the chance to do so against the #12-ranked contender, Sodiq Yusuff.

During a recent interview with The Schmo, Caceres revealed the promotion has offered him a fight with the Nigerian-American, who is 4-1 in the UFC after his decision loss to Arnold Allen in 2021. Despite admitting his team have been looking at “Super” as a potential opponent for a while, “Bruce Leeroy” says he ultimately doesn’t care who he faces.

“We’re trying to book March 12, it’s not for sure, there’s no papers signed yet, but it’s an opponent we’ve been looking at for a while, and we tried to solidify that matchup before, but we’re trying to get Sodiq Yusuff… They offered that to me, so I just said, ‘Yeah.’ I don’t really care (who my opponent is), honestly.”

If the fight comes to fruition, a victory for Caceres would be huge in cementing his status as a genuine contender at 145 pounds. For Yusuff, meanwhile, a win would get his charge back on track and ensure he’s still seen as one of the hottest prospects in the promotion.

How do you think a fight between Alex Caceres and Sodiq Yusuff would play out?

Taking main event status in a short-notice clash, surging middleweight contender, Marvin ‘The Italian Dream’ Vettori headlines his second straight promotional event, as does short-notice replacement, Kevin ‘Trailblazer’ Holland — who replaces former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till who suffered a broken collarbone last week.

Arriving off the back of a unanimous decision victory over former Cage Warriors welterweight titleholder, Jack Hermansson in December, Kings MMA staple, Vettori extended his undefeated streak to four-fights. With his most recnet loss coming in April 2018 in the form of a split decision defeat to current champion, Israel Adesanya, the Trento native has scored wins over Cezar Ferreira, Andrew Sanchez, Karl Roberson, and Hermansson since.

Making a record-tying twenty-one day turnaround, Holland will attempt to return to the winner’s enclosure following a unanimous decision shutout loss to middleweight staple, Derek Brunson just three weeks ago at UFC Vegas 22.

The defeat snapped a five-fight undefeated surge for the 28-year-old striker, following successes over Anthony Hernandez, Joaquin Buckley, Darren Stewart, Charlie Ontiveros, and a December knockout win over Jacare Souza.

Edson Barboza

It’s looking like Edson Barboza has a new opponent for his second fight at featherweight. The Brazilian was previously expected to face Jeremy Stephens on October 3 but will now fight Sodiq Yussuf instead on October 10.

Brazilian publication Combate reported earlier this month that the UFC was working on a fight between Barboza and Stephens which would feature on the October 3 card set to be headlined by Holly Holm vs. Irene Aldana.

According to a new report from Combate Stephens turned down the fight as he didn’t believe he had enough to time make the 145lb limit safely. So the UFC has found an alternative opponent in Yussuf and the pair will face off on the October 10 card which is expected to be headlined by a bantamweight bout between top contenders Marlon Moraes and Cody Sandhagen.

Long-time lightweight contender Barboza made the surprise drop down to featherweight after suffering back-to-back defeats against Paul Felder and Justin Gaethje. Barboza again fell short in his 145lb debut against Dan Ige but many believe he was on the wrong side of a bad decision from the judges in that fight. He remains a serious contender despite his poor run of form. Barboza holds several high-profile lightweight wins over the likes of Dan Hooker and Anthony Pettis. He will now look to get his first win at a new weight.

Yusuff is one of the fastest rising stars at featherweight since breaking into the UFC following an impressive performance on the second season of Dana White’s Contender Series. Yusuff has a perfect during his time with the UFC picking up wins over Andre Fili, Gabriel Benitez, Sheymon Moraes, and Suman Mokhtarian. He is currently ranked #11 in the division and will now get the chance to claim the biggest win of his young career.  While Yusuff may not be as big of a name as Stephens, he could arguably prove to be a tougher opponent for Barboza.

Who will win on October 10? Edson Barboza or Sodiq Yussuf?
