Sam Alvey was understandably very emotional following his fight with Julian Marquez.

Despite having a few moments in their middleweight encounter at UFC Vegas 23 last night, Alvey ended up getting dropped by Marquez in the second round and proceeded to go to sleep after receiving a rear naked choke.

It means Alvey remains winless in six outings, having suffered three finishes during that stretch. It was also the first time he had been choked unconscious — at least in the UFC — as he reflected on the fight moments after it concluded.

“It’s minutes after my fight, guys, and yeah, it didn’t go as planned,” Alvey posted on social media. “But God is in my corner — his plan is always better than my plan. I’ll be back. Man, that hurts.

“Well, at least I’ve been choked out in front of millions of people now. I can get that off my bucket list. Praise be to God always. Win or lose, he’s in my corner.”

It’s definitely been a tough run for Alvey whose last win came back in June 2018 when he defeated Gian Villante via split decision.

There’s no word on how many fights the 34-year-old has left on his contract but one can imagine the UFC could be tempted to add Alvey to its string of recent roster cuts.

It’s fair to say Darren Till was not impressed with the performance of Marvin Vettori.

Vettori was initially set to take on Till at the UFC Vegas 23 headliner last night only for a broken collarbone to rule out the latter. Despite Vettori being understanding at first, accusations of faking an injury followed soon after with things naturally being hostile with Till as a result.

Vettori, meanwhile, faced Kevin Holland on short notice and went on to win a lopsided unanimous decision after using his wrestling for majority of the five rounds in what was an overall drab fight.

And based on that performance, Till feels he knows how a fight with Vettori would have played out.

“As for marv… sorry ork. It wasn’t the prettiest win but a wins a win and it means so much to him you can see. That fight told me he knew he couldn’t strike with me so he was going to try take me down.

“Even if he were to succeed in takedowns he wouldn’t of been able to keep me there I would of hurt this man for five rounds on the feet But hey who the f*ck am I to talk? I pulled out of the fight so every right I have goes out the window with that Whatever happens for Marvin next good luck I’m sure we’ll meet soon I’ve got a fake injury to recover from and repair See you all soon All very soon x”

Till expects to return to training in the near future but whether he gets to fight Vettori remains to be seen with the latter now solely targeting a title shot.

Daniel ‘D-Rod’ Rodriguez has recorded the most high-profile victory of his professional career, exacting a striking clinic to take home a dominant, one-sided unanimous decision win over ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry to open the UFC Vegas 23 main card.

Utilising some of the sharpest boxing on display in recent events, the Los Angeles native, who has spent some considerable time training alongside future UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at the BMF Ranch — dominated Perry on the feet from start to finish.

Busting up the polarizing Flint, Michigan native in the opening round, Rodriguez ultimately left Perry covered in claret by the end of the third round — likely breaking the latter’s nose in the opening frame to boot.

Despite suffering two successful takedowns from Perry from three attempts, it was majorly plain sailing for Rodriguez — who now improves to 4-1 under the promotion’s banner.

Below, catch the highlights from Rodriguez’s one-sided unanimous judging triumph over Perry.

Gamrot

Former two-weight KSW champion, Mateusz ‘Gamer’ Gamrot is off the mark in the UFC — via an impressive second round knockout win over division mainstay, Scott ‘Hot Sauce’ Holtzman on the preliminary section of UFC Vegas 23.

Dropping his first professional loss last year on ‘Fight Island’ — the Pole suffered a competitive decision loss to Georgian standout, Guram Kutateladze.

Utisling his forward pressure and even scoring a breif takedown in the opening round via a transition from single-leg to a double variant, Gamrot got the attention of Holtzman, clipping him just above the ear despite some verbal disagreements from the latter.

Setting up the finish in the opening minute of the second, Gamrot, now under the tutelage of Mike Brown at American Top Team for the last three months, dropped Holtzman with a one-two combination before swarming with ground strikes. Timely and correct stoppage from Jason Herzog.

Below, catch the highlights from Gamrot’s first promotional win against Holtzman.

Talk about a spectacular comeback. Returning to the Octagon for the first time since August of 2016, Jarjis ‘Man Mountain’ Danho has made his comeback with a vengeance, stopping Yorgan de Castro with a huge opening round knockout win at UFC Vegas 23.

Snapping a five-year hiatus where he saw attempted pairings with the likes of Greg Hardy and Tai Tuivasa shelved, Danjo featured for the first time since a majority draw against Christian Colombo.

Uncorking a massive counter-right overhand right on the temple of de Castro, Danho flattened the Cape Verde native to the canvas, with referee, Mike Beltran immediately rushing in to halt the action. Incredible return for the Syrian-born Hammers Team trainee.
