Staph Infection Pulls Robert Drysdale Out of Octagon Debut at UFC 163 [UPDATED]

(Drysdale’s most recent win, against DJ Linderman at Legacy FC 19 in April.)

The UFC’s current injury bug just sunk one of the most exciting promotional debuts of the year. As first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, jiu-jitsu phenom Robert Drysdale has been forced out of his light-heavyweight match against Ednaldo Oliveira at UFC 163 (August 3rd in Rio), reportedly due to a staph infection. [Ed. note: Oh God…I just let Robert swim in my pool. Fuuuuuu-.]

After racking up a laundry list of grappling titles including an Open-Division gold medal at the 2007 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championships, Drysdale began competing professionally in MMA in 2010, finishing all six of his opponents by first-round submission.

No word yet on when Drysdale will be ready to return to action, or if Oliveira — who kind of dodged a bullet, here — will remain on the card against a different opponent. If any gross photos of Drysdale’s staph infection hit the Internet, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Update: According to a Tatame report, Ednaldo Oliveira will remain on the card against Nova Uniao 205’er Francimar Barosso. Barosso has a 15-3 record, with 14 of his wins by stoppage, and once head-kick KO’d a dude in five seconds.

Gross Video of the Day: Mark Hunt Has a Gaping Hole in His Leg

(Props: FightSummary via Reddit MMA)

Over the weekend, UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt revealed that he was in the hospital to have surgery on his left leg, to address an infected hematoma stemming from his fight against Junior Dos Santos. “Right leg is fractured big toe lol and left left is infected bruise lol I’m a walking infection,” Hunt tweeted, laughing out loud twice to signify how badly injured he is.

But we had no idea exactly what shape Hunt was in until we saw this video, in which Hunt peels back some dressing/tarp-thingy to reveal a giant freaking hole in his leg. Randleman vs. Staph comes to mind. If there was ever any doubt about Hunto’s toughness, just listen to the nonchalant way he discusses how it looks like a bullet hole, and it’s a lot cleaner than it was before. Blugh. That’ll do, Mark.

Erik Perez Out of UFC 159 With Staph Infection; Bryan Caraway to Replace Against Johnny Bedford

Seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a good-old-fashioned staph outbreak in the world of MMA. The latest victim of the nasty bacterial infection is Erik “Goyito” Perez, the bantamweight up-and-comer who was slated to face TUF 14 vet Johnny Bedford on the UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen prelims this Saturday in Newark. Perez, who holds a 3-0 UFC record with all wins by first-round stoppage, was hospitalized over the weekend with a severe staph infection in his leg. No word yet on a timetable for Perez’s return; let’s just hope his infection hasn’t reached Randleman or McFedries levels of grossness.

Replacing Perez on less than a week’s notice is Team Alpha Male’s Bryan Caraway, who’s coming off a split-decision loss to Takeya Mizugaki at UFC on FUEL 8 in March. Miesha’s boyfriend will need to come correct against Bedford, who’s officially 2-0 in the UFC with both wins by KO/TKO. So will Caraway follow in the footsteps of his teammates’ recent success, thanks to the addition of striking coach Duane Ludwig? And will you care enough to watch it?
