With the MMA world still abuzz with speculation as to whether or not Chuck Liddell will finally call it quits, not to mention the daily drama / intrigue that always accompanies the UFC (perhaps you’re following Chael Sonnen’s recent memory lapses regarding his Twitter account), tomorrow’s Strikeforce card seems to have really been lost in the shuffle. Perhaps, just mentioning it has caused you to say ‘oh shit that’s right, there’s a Strikeforce Wednesday.’

Now granted, you may not weep uncontrollably if you don’t have Showtime and can’t catch the card, but the headliner between Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Robbie Lawler definitely has the potential to be damn exciting, as does the Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Prangley tilt. Prangley is a UFC vet that could give a lot of top middleweights a run for their money, while Kennedy continues to impress, with his only loss since 2001 coming against “Mayhem” Miller. In a recent interview with Fight Hype, the Army Ranger had this to say about facing Prangley tomorrow:

“He’s a great wrestler and he’s hard to take down and he has a great chin as well, but he’s slow. He’s slow on his feet and his footwork is not that great. I would like to pick him apart a whole bunch on the feet and finish him with an exciting knockout, like all the fans want to see.”

In the first installment of Writer vs. Fighter, Cain Velasquez narrowly defeated me after we predicted almost exactly the same results for UFC 114. In an effort to distract attention from my loss, allow me to point out that we were both spot on when it came to the main event, even if we also both missed a few on the undercard (yeah, like you picked Mike Russow to knock out Todd Duffee, smart guy).

For UFC 115 this weekend, I challenged Army Ranger and Strikeforce middleweight Tim Kennedy to square off against me in one of the only MMA-related activities I actually stand somewhat of a chance at beating him in. And even though Tim has a real fight to worry about against Trevor Prangley at next Wednesday’s Strikeforce event in Los Angeles, he was gracious enough to accept.

Now I must put his kindness out of my mind and focus on destroying him. As they say in both prison and reality TV, I didn’t come here to make friends.

Tim Kennedy is a family man, a rising MMA star, and a war hero. He is guided by a strong moral compass and upholds what he thinks is right. As a result, he will no doubt rub some of you the wrong way.

He is unapologetically pro-military. He thinks that too many high-profile fighters are irresponsible, and that your favorite scary MMA t-shirt is lame. His shorts will never promote alcohol, tobacco, gambling, or pornography, and he snickers at nicknames that have “Killer” or “Assassin” in them. He takes seriously his role as a professional athlete and would like to see more of the MMA community follow his lead.

For some of you, Tim’s patriotism and wholesome principles are breaths of fresh air. Others, however, might be wondering if his high horse actually has a name. Either way, there’s no denying that Tim is one of MMA’s most quintessential warriors (for real).

A U.S. Army Staff Sergeant with the 19th Special Forces Group, Tim is a trained sniper and combatives instructor whose combat heroism has earned him the Bronze Star. Now, with an already impressive military record to his credit, Tim is preparing for just his second fight as a full-time fighter and has already lined up in his crosshairs the Strikeforce middleweight championship belt.

On June 16 at Strikeforce: Los Angeles, Tim Kennedy (11-2) will climb into the cage with rugged South African veteran Trevor Prangley (22-5-1), his biggest test to date. Tim has yet to fight someone with the combination of size, strength, toughness, and experience that is Prangley, so he’s keeping to a basic plan of attack: dominate the fight in every possible way. Why get fancy, right?
