There’s a new king of the UFC’s bantamweight division, and his name isn’t Dominick Cruz or TJ Dillashaw.

Cody Garbrandt shook up the mixed martial arts (MMA) world when he outclassed Cruz in their 135-pound title bout in the co-main event UFC 207, handing ‘The Dominator’ his second-ever loss of his illustrious career. ‘No Love’ snapped “The Dominator’s” decade-long win streak and handled him unlike anyone we’ve ever seen before.

Now Garbrandt is slated to make his first career title defense against former Team Alpha Male teammate Dillashaw after they square off as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 25. The UFC bantamweight champ recently spoke to MMA Fighting to discuss his win over Cruz, and questioned the former king of 135 pounds’ heart inside the Octagon:

“I was very surprised with Dominick, all the sh*t talking he did,” Garbrandt said. “What he said he was gonna do to me, he wasn’t able to do that, so I was just waiting for him to get the rematch. Give him the rematch, give him the respect for being the most dominant bantamweight fighter in the world. If I talked a lot of sh*t and kid comes and beats me up like that, I’d at least try again, because I have a fighter heart.”

“I feel like Dominick doesn’t [have a fighter’s heart],” Garbrandt said. “I think I broke Dominick in that fight and truly don’t think Dominick will be the same.”

While Garbrandt may prefer an immediate rematch against Cruz for his first title defense he’s fine stepping into the Octagon with Dillashaw, who he labels as ‘not a good person’:

“That’s fine,” Garbrandt said. “I’m very content with fighting T.J. I’m happy to fight T.J. T.J.’s not a good person. He’s not a good person. He’s kind of a generic version of Dominick Cruz.”

How do you see the matchup between Garbrandt and Dillashaw going down? And will ‘No Love’ and Cruz get the opportunity to run it back again down the road?

Cody Garbrandt, TJ Dillashaw Already Throwing Jabs for Upcoming UFC Title Fight

One of Conor McGregor’s most famous “Mystic Mac” predictions was an ugly divorce between Urijah Faber and “snake in the grassTJ Dillashaw in 2015. While his prediction wasn’t completely correct, the last year and a half has proved him to be pretty darn close as Dillashaw and his former gym, Team Alpha Male, have been at odds in a big way.

Those tensions are surfacing today in the build to Dillashaw‘s bantamweight title fight and The Ultimate Fighter coaching gig opposite former teammate Cody Garbrandt, and, according to Dillashaw, the blame for this lies squarely with his old mentor.

“Cody should have no involvement in this at all,” Dillashaw said Wednesday at a Q&A on Wednesday (h/t MMAFighting.com for the transcription).

He was coming in, I was on my way out, for the most part. We were never friends. … I think it’s more Urijah pumping these guys up and continuing to push this trash and build this team, which is money in his pocket. Every guy that fights from there pays him. I think it’s him being the mastermind behind this whole thing.

For a time, Dillashaw was the toast of the Team Alpha Male camp. Long regarded as a gym full of “bridesmaid” fighters that consistently fell short of the title, Dillashaw shocked the world in 2014 by dominating then-champion Renan Barao and bringing UFC gold to Sacramento.

A soured relationship between Faber, the patriarch of Team Alpha Male, and striking coach Duane Ludwig broke the gym in half. When Ludwig left to form his own gym in Colorado, Dillashaw also uprooted and left for the Centennial State.

That split and a perceived “victim” mentality irk Garbrandt

“He’s trying to play the victim on the show,” Garbrandt said at a separate Q&A on Wednesday (h/t MMAFighting.com). “He’s trying to be the nice guy. I already know who TJ is.” He continued on, “He’s going in there and saying Danny Castillo and Justin Buchholz are his best friends but where are they? They’re on my team. They’re with me. We won the world championship together.”

While The Ultimate Fighter house has hosted a number of legendary rivalries over the years, including Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate and Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, TUF25 is shaping up to be one of the most intense in recent years. The show begins airing April 19.

Cody Garbrandt is ready to get his hands on TJ Dillashaw.

The former Team Alpha Male teammates will meet inside the Octagon for the bantamweight title after the conclusion of their stints as coaches in The Ultimate Fighter 25 (TUF 25). Dillashaw has since departed from Alpha Male in favor of longtime coach and friend Duane Ludwig in Colorado, driving a huge divide between the former 135-pound champ and his former teammates.

Garbrandt is coming off of the biggest win of his career, in which he dismantled longtime bantamweight great Dominick Cruz in their co-main event meeting at UFC 207 this past December, winning his first career UFC title. Now he will make his first title defense against Dillashaw, in hopes of repaying his former teammate for betraying the Alpha Male family.

Recently at a TUF 25 media day (quotes via MMA Fighting) Garbrandt insinuated that Dillashaw is attempting to paint himself as the victim in the whole situation:

“I take it as just me being real, just confronting problems,” Garbrandt said. “That’s what I think fake people don’t do. That’s T.J. He’s the fakest person I ever met. From the beginning.

“He’s trying to play the victim on the show,” Garbrandt said. “He’s trying to be the nice guy. I already know who T.J. is.”

When Dillashaw departed from Team Alpha Male he left behind a few good friends, and those friends include Justin Buchholz and Danny Castillo who now coach opposite him for team Garbrandt. Those two men will now be cornering Garbrandt against Dillashaw when they meet for the title:

“He’s going in there and saying Danny Castillo and Justin Buccholz are his best friends,” Garbrandt said. “But where are they? They’re on my team. They’re with me. We won the world championship together.”

Garbrandt is confident in his ability to go in and finish Dillashaw upon their Octagon meeting, and believe he’s only hitting his stride as champion at just 25-years-old:

“It’s a fight that I’ve wanted for so long, especially with the animosity and hatred towards T.J. for what he’s done and how he’s acted — not as a fighter, but as a man,” Garbrandt said.

“I know I will knock out T.J. — 100 percent I’ll knock out T.J.,” he said. “I don’t have to go out there and get the knockout. I’m gonna go out there and perform. I’m gonna go out there and have fun. I’m just finally hitting my stride.”

Do you think Garbrandt will be able to muster up a knockout win against his former teammate and successfully defend his bantamweight title for the first time?

TJ Dillashaw Blasts Cody Garbrandt: I Was Never Close With Him

Former Team Alpha Male teammates Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw will fight for Garbrandt’s newly acquired UFC bantamweight title later this year after they coach opposite each other on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Since losing his title to Dominick Cruz last January, Dillashaw has won two straight over Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker to earn another shot at divisional supremacy. Garbrandt, on the other hand, recently dominated Cruz over the course of five rounds to steal the title at this past December’s UFC 207.

The two bantamweights have seemed to stir up a rivalry since Dillashaw’s departure from the Sacramento-based Team Alpha Male, but the ex-champion recently told Submission Radio that him and “No Love” were never close. He also said that the champion tends to put on an act when the cameras are rolling:

“I was never close with him, I was never friends with him and he’s just obsessed with what I’m doing and how I’m living and what’s going on in my life,” Dillashaw said. “I don’t question anything of what he’s got going on cause that’s him. I could care less. You know, I just kind of feel like they’re just obsessed with what I’ve got going on. Off-camera, not on interviews, things are fine. Things are perfectly fine. We’re in rooms together and things are nothing, but as soon as the camera’s on and doing interviews, he’s the tough guy because he wants to look cool. For him it’s all about looking cool and getting his social media followers up. It’s a lot of petty stuff. He’s getting his hair lined up and his eyebrows waxed and looking as cool as he possibly can, but really I think it makes him look just kinda dumb, you know, to buy into all that. He really doesn’t have the wits behind him. He can talk, but really it’s just him getting angry. You saw with Cruz as well, he just kinda gets angry and loses it. He really doesn’t have any valid points.”

Who do you expect to walk away with 135-pound gold when Garbrandt and Dillashaw settle their bad blood later this year?
