UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has set his goals very high as he believes he can be the one to stop Demetrious Johnson from breaking Anderson Silva’s longstanding UFC title defense record. The key to all of that is for him to drop weight in order to accept the fight, which is willing to do.

Johnson (25-2-1) is the only flyweight champion in UFC history and will attempt to match Silva’s record of 10 consecutive defenses when he faces Wilson Reis at UFC on FOX 24 next month. If Johnson can win that fight, then he would have to win one more fight to set a new record. However, Garbrandt (11-0) believes he can prevent that from happening.

Despite being the champion at bantamweight, Garbrandt is more interested in fight Johnson if he can successfully defend his belt against T.J. Dillashaw (14-3) in the summer.

“I’d rather go down (a weight class) before I go up,” Garbrandt said in an interview with Onnit CEO Aubrey Marcus. “Demetrious has a fight with Wilson Reis in the not too distant future that’s coming up. He’ll tie Anderson Silva’s record, then his next fight would be the all-time record. He’s going for the huge record. Make him earn it (by fighting me).”

Garbrandt is coaching against Dillashaw on the upcoming “The Ultimate Fighter 25” series, but after that, he thinks that he has several options including expressing interest in showdowns with UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo and UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor. However, those fights are not realistic, but a fight with Johnson is a possible fight that can be booked.

“Obviously T.J. is first and foremost – I’m focused on him – but you have to think about other things,” Garbrandt said. “Conor’s not fighting, Aldo and (Max) Holloway are fighting (at UFC 212 in June), so that ties up (everyone but) Demetrious, and he’s pound-for-pound best, incredible fighter, great human. I like him a lot and his family, but for me it’s a legacy I set out to build. Friendships are friendships, but it’s business at the end of the day, and I think it could go on as a huge fight, especially for that division because it’s kind of lackluster a lot.”

“I’m young, 25, so if I go down (in weight) now, the time is now for that fight (with Johnson) to be on the rise,” Garbrandt said. “I really think that should be (the next fight) – after the T.J. fight of course. … I’ll wait and see if Dominick comes back, but if not I’m going to go after ‘DJ.’”

TJ Dillashaw: Conor McGregor Has Big Holes In His Game

TJ Dillashaw knows there are some big holes in UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor’s game.

Dillashaw is currently attempting to re-claim the 135-pound title that he lost to Dominick Cruz back in January of last year. Cruz would eventually suffer his first loss in almost a decade and drop the strap to Dillashaw’s former training partner, Cody Garbrandt.

Now the two former friends will coach opposite one another on the 25th season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 25), with an inevitable title bout on the docket for the second half of the year. While recently speaking to Fight Hub TV ahead of the pending title bout, Dillashaw recently commented on the rumored boxing match between UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Dillashaw has a small bit of history against ‘The Notorious One’, having helped former training partner Chad Mendes prepare for his interim featherweight title bout against the Irishman at UFC 189 back in 2015. The former bantamweight champ says he and ‘Money’ exploited some big holes in McGregor’s game, as Mendes took ‘Mystic Mac’ down and bludgeoned him for the first two rounds of the fight.

McGregor was able to get back to his feet after Mendes tired out in the latter half of the second round and win the interim strap via knockout, going on to UFC 194 five months later to knock out Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds to unify the titles and become the 145-pound division’s undisputed champion.

Conor McGregor knocks out Chad Mendes at UFC 189Heading into Mendes’ meeting against McGregor in ‘Sin City’ Dillashaw doubted the then up-and-coming knockout artist’s ability to hang with ‘Money’, but he has a way of proving his doubters wrong on frequent occasion, and he could do the same against Mayweather:

“Mayweather man, I think so. Just cause of the experience. I always doubt him though, I always doubt McGregor. We’ll see, he’s big – my training partner Chad Mendes made fun of him. Going into that fight we knew of some big holes in Conor’s game, Chad exploited it. Chad got to train ten days for that fight, beat him up for two rounds, then gassed out and got beat.

“I just doubted the holes he had in his game, Diaz exploited it as well that he does have some big holes. Now he’s going to fight the best boxer ever and it’s pretty huge but, McGregor’s huge man. He’s a big dude. He walks around at like 180 probably. That’s a big difference between Mayweather.”

Dominick Cruz Wants The Next Title Shot

Dominick Cruz wants his title back.

The former UFC bantamweight champ is coming off of his first loss in nearly a decade when he dropped a unanimous decision to Cody Garbrandt in the co-main event of UFC 207 live on pay-per-view (PPV). ‘The Dominator’s’ 13-fight win streak was snapped after the lopsided defeat, but Cruz’s confidence remained intact.

Cruz’s longtime head coach at Alliance MMA, Eric Del Fierro, says the former champ is doing well after the loss, and is focusing on getting back to 100 percent before he steps back into the Octagon (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Whomever’s got the belt, that’s who (Cruz) wants next. Dominick is good,” said Del Fierro. “You guys have seen him around – he stays positive, he does his thing. Right now, he’s just taking care of his body. He’s training – not 100 percent, full time – but he’s here training and just kind of letting his body heal.

“With that plantar fasciitis, that seems to be the one of the most complicated injuries he’s ever had, and I say that because anybody that’s had that injury, or that condition, it just doesn’t go away. And the only thing that really helps it is rest.”

Del Fierro went on to praise Garbrandt for him composure inside of the Octagon, and believes that ‘No Love’ has not yet shown the world everything he has stored up in his arsenal:

“I think Cody’s slick,” Del Fierro said. “He’s slick, and I think what he showed is a lot of composure. I think he’s got a lot more that he hasn’t shown. Rematches are always difficult, and teammates fighting teammates is a whole different level of mental battle, so the question is who can put it aside more than the other and I would kind of give that edge to Cody – but I don’t know.”

TJ Dillashaw: Urijah Faber Is Cody Garbrandt’s “Daddy”

If you thought the trash talk between UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt and former champ TJ Dillashaw was going to be good heading into their season as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 25, you were right.

After a photo leaked of Garbrandt choking Dillashaw on the set, “The Viper” spoke to the Fight Society podcast to preview the show, and called out “No Love” for not being able to make his own decisions with his Team Alpha Male leader Urijah Faber.

So much so, in fact, that he’s his ‘daddy’:

“Urijah is Cody’s daddy. Cody can’t make any decisions without Urijah. Urijah’s involved with everything. That’s why Urijah was mad when I left. He likes to be in control. He wants to be the top dog. I hardly even know Cody. It’s kind of comical that Cody wanted to get mad about this whole thing cause I hardly even know the guy. He was on his way in when I was on my way out.”

Garbrandt and Dillashaw are on a collision course not only because they are two of the top three bantamweights in MMA, but also because of the long-standing bad blood Dillashaw has with TAM after his now-infamous falling out with Faber when he chose to leave the team for Denver’s Elevation Fight Team.

But “The Viper” insists he hardly knew Garbrandt, so he finds it funny that his feud with Fader is spilling over into “No Love’s” disposition towards him even though it should not:

“He was on the team when everyone was making fun of him for who he was. Now everyone’s got his back cause he’s doing great. He’s doing good for the team and getting a good name out there. But really the beef with Cody is just comical because it shouldn’t concern him at all. Just because it involves Urijah, he wants to get all riled up and puff out his feathers and act like a tough guy. I expected this from Cody. He’s a hot head and just for him to not really be able to express himself mentally but just get all worked up.”

Dillashaw then took a shot at the whole team, offering the view that rather than come up with their own promotional material, they listen to lightweight champion Conor McGregor and repeat what he says:

“They’ve got Conor’s [expletive] in their mouth talking about what he’s talking about and they can’t really come up with their own [expletive]. They don’t really have anything.”

After winning the UFC bantamweight title with a dominant performance over Dominick Cruz in the co-main event of this past December’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada, Cody “No Love” Garbrandt expressed interest in facing off with ex-teammate and former titleholder TJ Dillashaw.

Garbrandt was granted his wish, as he will indeed defend his strap against Dillashaw later this year, but not before the two coach opposite each other on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which has been labeled Redemption.

It was clear that the two 135 pounders had some bad blood between them, but it appears as if the two actually got into a physical altercation while filming the reality show. A screenshot, which was grabbed from a recent UFC 209 promotional video (Via MMAMania), shows “No Love” grabbing the neck of Dillashaw.

Are you excited for the next season of TUF, and who do you expect to come out on top when the two men meet later this year?

Cody Garbrandt Reveals Why TJ Dillashaw Is Worse Than Dominick Cruz

UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt shocked the MMA universe with how easily he handled longtime former champ Dominick Cruz in a decisive victory in the co-main event of December’s UFC 207. UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt shocked the MMA universe with how easily he handled longtime former champ Dominick Cruz in a decisive victory in the co-main event of December’s UFC 207.

Immediately after guard-changing win, “No Love” was quick to voice a desire to fight Cruz, who hadn’t lost in 10 years, in an immediate rematch. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, however, as Garbrandt was unveiled to be facing TJ Dillashaw this summer after the two former teammates square off as opposing coaches on the 25th season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

Garbrandt recently addressed the scenario to MMA Junkie, revealing that Cruz, whose heart he questioned by calling ‘broken,’ was offered the fight only to turn it down:

“He turned it down. He said he’d wait.”

Perhaps Cruz needed time off to heal, or perhaps he needed it to devise a new gameplan to deal with the confusing, cocksure style the new champ brings. Cruz responded, stating he had no problem waiting for Garbrandt and Dillashaw to settle their intra-squad feud:

“T.J. wants next, and I have no problem with that. The guy’s very good himself. We’ve had our exchange of words, and I wouldn’t take back one thing that I’ve said about anybody in the division.”

But while Cruz may be in approval of Dillashaw, who dominated previously rising knockout artist John Lineker at the same event the belt shifted to “No Love,” Garbrandt himself won’t be that nice. He said he’s ready and willing to fight his old Alpha Male teammate, who he believes isn’t best human being after his highly-publicized, messy split with the squad.

The new bantamweight boss then took it to the next level, revealing his simple thought process on why “The Viper” is just a more vanilla version of the respected opponent he just beat handily:

“I’ve very content with fighting T.J. I’m happy to fight T.J. I want to fight T.J. He’s is not a good person. He’s not a good person, and he’s kind of a generic version of Dominick Cruz.”
