Handing Danish Olympian, Mark O. Madsen his first loss in professional mixed martial arts, surging lightweight contender, Grant Dawson has likely cracked the division top-15 despite his weight miss, scoring a dominant third round rear-naked choke win to open the main card of UFC Vegas 64.

Dawson, who missed the lightweight non-title limit by one and a half pounds for tonight’s high-stakes clash with the undefeated, Madsen, managed to dominant the wrestling exchanges with the Greco-Roman wrestler, working his way to the former’s back on cue in the opening couple of rounds.

Chopping away at Madsen’s left leg in the third and final frame, Dawson followed the Dane to the canvas, eventually working to set up a rear-naked choke and force a stoppage from referee, Herb Dean.

Following the victory, Dawson called for a fight against the faltering former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson in his next Octagon appearance.

Below, catch the highlights from Grant Dawson’s impressive win over Mark O. Madsen

Former UFC welterweight Ben Askren doesn’t believe that Nate Diaz can hang with Jake Paul in a boxing match.

Paul has impressed many combat sport enthusiasts, as he has gone undefeated in his short career as a professional boxer. Paul impressed once again with his unanimous decision win over Anderson Silva in his last match. He was able to hit Silva with heavy shots, even knocking him down in the last round. Silva also admitted that everyone should respect what Paul is doing, as he is putting his all into training.

Diaz and Paul’s camps went at it at Paul’s last event, as the two threw water bottles at each other and got into physical altercation to go along with it. Diaz is currently a free agent after his last fight with Tony Ferguson. He won that fight via submission and although he is a free agent, he kept the door open for a potential UFC comeback. Diaz would still like to finish off his trilogy with Conor McGregor, as the two have been promising the fans and media that they will settle their rivalry.

Ben Askren doesn’t believe that Diaz has what it takes to hang with Paul in a boxing match

“There’s a chance. I mean I don’t know why anyone would think that Nate has much of a chance given what just happened,” Askren, the former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion, told Submission Radio in a recent interview. “Nate’s a lot smaller. I don’t think anyone would consider Nate on the level of striker that Anderson is, but yeah I guess it might happen.” (transcribed by Bloodyelbow)

Paul now has a boxing record of 6-0, with wins over two former UFC champions. He beat Tyron Woodley twice, Nate Robinson, Silva, Askren, and a YouTuber by the name of AnEsonGib.

Tony Ferguson has not taken kindly to criticism from his cold-war rival Khabib Nurmagomedov. The two were booked in five bouts, but a matchup never materialized. ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov retired as an undefeated UFC world champion, and ‘El Cucuy‘ feels that they have unfinished business.

Khabib Nurmagomedov will be coaching Islam Makhachev this weekend at UFC 280. Makhachev is set to battle Charles Oliveira for the crown previously held by Khabib.

In the leadup to this Abu Dhabi showdown, Nurmagomedov was asked about his old rival, Ferguson, while speaking to UFC Russia, and said:

“[Tony Ferguson’s] time is up, and there’s no way to get it back. Not Khabib, not Tony, nobody. We had our time, and it passed … He continues to fight, he needs money. You have to pay your bills in the U.S., and I’m sure that since he’s a Californian, I know all the Californian fighters – everything he earned, take half of that. I think he keeps fighting for money to pay bills, taxes. He has a family, I think he has two kids. I don’t blame him, but you can’t get back time. When your time goes away it doesn’t ask your name.”

‘El Cucuy’ Tony Ferguson responds to Khabib Nurmagomedov

The 38-year-old MMA fighter Tony Ferguson heard these words and responded on Twitter:

“Oh Fathead, When Will You Ever Grow A Pair of Balls & Stop Writing Checks Your Body Can’t Cash ? Pops Would Be Pissed If He Knew How Much Of A Turd Ya’Turned Into ? What A Eunic ?? Does This Dude Even Tiramisu ????– Champ ?? -CSO-.”

The US-born athlete Ferguson was a one-time UFC interim world champion at lightweight. Currently, the UFC fighter is 0-5 since 2020. Prior to that, he looked unstoppable while riding a 12-fight win streak. ‘El Cucuy’ is switching to welterweight and most recently took a loss in the main event of UFC 279 against a retiring Nate Diaz.

Tony Ferguson, despite retirement, still wants Khabib Nurmagomedov. He even called out the Dagestani fighter to pitch coaching a season of TUF against one another. UFC President Dana White and ‘The Eagle’ himself both seemed interested in the idea in June. No further updates are available on that story.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has claimed that former interim titleholder and arch-rival, Tony Ferguson is only continuing fighting amid his continued losing streak, in order to afford his taxes and bills in the state of California.

Khabib, who was infamously tied to both title and non-title fights with Ferguson on five separate occasions during their respective runs atop the lightweight division, without ever sharing the Octagon with the Oxnard veteran.

For Khabib, the Dagestan grappler called time on his professional career back in September 2020 on ‘Fight Island’ – submitting common-foe, Justin Gaethje with a second triangle to successfully unify the division titles.

For Ferguson, the former interim lightweight champion headlined UFC 279 in an impromptu welterweight headliner against Nate Diaz just last month, starting brightly before suffering an eventual fourth round guillotine choke loss.

The defeat came as the faltering Ferguson’s fifth consecutively, following defeats to Michael Chandler, Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and the aforenoted, Gaethje.

Khabib Nurmagomedov claims Tony Ferguson is only competing in order to make money

Sharing his thoughts on the continued skid of Ferguson recently ahead of his protégé, Islam Makhachev’s UFC 280 title fight against Oliveira, former champion, Khabib claimed Ferguson needs to fight for money, maintaining his time in the sport is gone.

“His (Tony Ferguson) time is up, and there’s no way to get it back,” Khabib Nurmagomedov told UFC Russia during a recent interview. “Not Khabib, not Tony (Ferguson), nobody. We had our time, and it passed.”

“He continues to fight, he needs money,” Khabib Nurmagomedov continued. “You have to pay your bills in the U.S., and I’m sure that since he’s a Californian, I know all the Californian fighters – everything he earned, take half of that. I think he keeps fighting for money to pay bills, taxes. He has a family, I think he has two kids. I don’t blame him, but you can’t get back time. When your time goes away it doesn’t ask your name.”

In his most recent win as part of a division-best run of 12 consecutive victories, Ferguson defeated the now-retired, Donald Cerrone with a second round doctor’s stoppage TKO win back in June 2019.

Khabib

On October 22nd, Charles Oliveira will step back into the Octagon, taking on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege Islam Makhachev to crown a new UFC lightweight champion.

With 10 straight wins, Makhachev walks into the bout as the No. 4 ranked lightweight, but he will face the toughest test of his mixed martial arts career as he meets the man many still recognize as the true lightweight champion. Guiding Makhachev in his training for a showdown with ‘Do Bronx’ is none other than UFC Hall of Famer, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The former UFC lightweight champion discussed his protege’s mental and physical state going into the biggest fight of his career in an interview clip shared by UFC Europe on Twitter.

“Islam (Makhachev) is at his peak right now. He’s not 26, 27, or 23. He’s 30. A week after the fight he’ll be 31. It’s the best time for any athlete. It’s a time when your mental and physical states should be in synergy. Sometimes your mental state is high, but your physical state is going down. Or when you’re 27 and at your physical peak, but your mental state is lower because you’re just 27, not 31.

“I think Islam is better than [Charles] overall. Of course, there are some potential dangers that we’re working on. Dangers where Islam needs to be careful. Other than that, Islam should roll over him. It’s my opinion. Somebody might not like it, but again, I’m just stating my opinion. People say that’s disrespect, but I see no disrespect here. On October 22nd, we want to go through him.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov Says Tony Ferguson’s ‘Time Is Up’

While Khabib Nurmagomedov has kept busy preparing Islam Makhachaev for his long-awaited UFC title opportunity, the undefeated icon still finds time to talk about division rival Tony Ferguson.

Despite the fact that the two stars never faced each other inside the Octagon, both have spent what feels like a lifetime taking shots at one another in interviews and on social media. Khabib has once again spoken out about ‘El Cucuy‘ and his recent struggles inside the Octagon.

“His time is up, and there’s no way to get it back,” Nurmagomedov said. “Not Khabib, not Tony, nobody. We had our time, and it passed. He continues to fight. He needs money.

Tony Ferguson is currently riding a five-fight losing streak, though, to his credit, those losses have come against some of the absolute best fighters in the world including Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler. Most recently, ‘El Cucuy’ suffered a fourth-round submission loss to Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 main event on September 10th.
