Li Jingliang defends the UFC for booking him against Tony Ferguson, citing that fans and the media forget how good of a fighter he still is.

El Cucuy‘ is coming off the worst stretch of his career, as he has lost each of his last four matches. All four of those matches, have been against elite level fighter in the 155 pound division. He lost against Justin Gaethje, Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and Michael Chandler. Chandler’s knockout of Ferguson, was by far the most disturbing loss he has taken. Chandler flatlined Ferguson with a beautifully timed front kick up the middle.

Up until that point of the fight, Ferguson was doing very well, and most likely even stole the first round from Chandler. he had knocked him down in the first round, and looked like a prime Ferguson while striking.

UFC 279 will be the first time Ferguson has fought in the welterweight division, since 2011. When fighters make the move up or down while being on a losing streak, that usually means they are at the end of their fighting career.

Li Jingliang doesn’t believe Ferguson is done and believes that everyone is underestimating the former interim champ

“For the people who say it like that – Tony Ferguson four losses in a row, never fought at welterweight – you forget who he is,” Jingliang told MMA Junkie. “He is Tony Ferguson. You forgot all those people whose face got cut by Tony Ferguson. Amazing fighters were choked by him. You should give credit to him. I believe if you fight against him, you would know how hard to deal with a guy like ‘El Cucuy’ is. You shouldn’t forget those fighters like Tony, who is a pioneer in the sport. You should give him respect.” (Transcribed by MMAJunkie)

Ferguson’s best quality while he was on his dominant lightweight run, was how well he was able to take a hit and keep coming. With his chin being checked a few times now, Ferguson is clearly not the same fighter he once was. Match that with the inevitability of “Father Time”, and it may seem as if Ferguson’s career in the UFC may be coming to an end. A loss at UFC 279 may force Ferguson’s hand.

Chael Sonnen does not see Tony Ferguson vs. Li Jingliang as ‘breaking news’: ‘I’m not trying to be a d*ck’

Chael Sonnen is not a fan of the upcoming fight between Tony Ferguson and Li Jingliang.

Former UFC middleweight Sonnen is one of the most notable athletes to have come out of the promotion and is often credited for understanding the entertainment part of things in the sport. While he usually seems to side with the UFC on many decisions, he does not seem too impressed with their recent matchmaking.

Chael Sonnen does not understand the point behind Tony Ferguson vs. Li Jingliang

Coming off the first-ever knockout loss of his career in May, Tony Ferguson got paired up for a move up to the welterweight division with Li Jingliang for the co-main event of UFC 279, scheduled for Sep. 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Chael Sonnen shared his thoughts on the nearing showdown.

“I don’t like it,” Sonnen said (ht MMA Fighting). “Now we’re going to bring Ferguson back, great story, he’s hanging in there, he’s traded camps, he’s doing things different, and you’re giving him — I don’t know of ‘Leech’ [Jingliang]. I don’t know if that’s his nickname or that’s his name, and I’m not trying to be a dick. I assume you call a guy a leech, like he claims to be — I haven’t the foggiest idea who we’ve got opposite Tony Ferguson or how we’re supposed to pretend that that matters.”

Sonnen doesn’t think the fight was breaking news

“The American Gangster” is of the opinion that there are no clear stakes for the matchup that could draw people’s interest. Sonnen argued the promotion may not have thought it through, questioning what would happen next after the result.

“If ‘The Leech’ wins, what happens?” Sonnen added. “If Tony wins, OK, great — he gets another fight, he holds on to his career. If ‘The Leech’ wins? No, I don’t love it. I don’t love it. I don’t think that should’ve been breaking news. I don’t think there should’ve been a press conference. I don’t think it was worthy. That’s the kind of fight you’d lay out the card and then you’d just mention it.”

Rafael dos Anjos calls for a veteran matchup against ‘Jim Miller, Jorge Masvidal or… Tony Ferguson’

Rafael dos Anjos

Former UFC lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos is done with chasing the title, and now wants to put on some fan-friendly bouts against fellow veterans of the sport.

‘RDA’ faced off with rising contender Rafael Fiziev in the main event of a UFC Fight Night bout earlier this year, where he was brutally knocked out in the final round. The result of this fight has seemingly convinced the former 155lb title holder that his days at the very top of the division are done.

In a recent post to his Twitter account, Rafael dos Anjos stated that he now wishes to face off against the likes of Jim Miller or Jorge Masvidal, or even rematch Tony Ferguson or Clay Guida, rather than make another run at the No.1 spot of the 155lb division.

He stated: “I had my last title run…and now it is time to fight people that motivates me to wake up and train. I have almost eight hours of octagon time…get me a veteran for a change!I would love to fight guys like Jim Miller, Jorge Masvidal or get my rematch with Tony Ferguson or Guida.”

How likely is Rafael dos Anjos to get one of the four names he has mentioned?

Of the four names dos Anjos has stated he is interested in, two are already currently matched up with opponents.

Tony Ferguson is set to face off against Li Jingliang in the next PPV event, UFC 279. ‘El Cucuy‘ defeated RDA back in 2016, picking up a unanimous decision victory. However, the time since has not been overly kind to Ferguson, who is now riding a four-fight losing streak. He has recently made the move to Jackson Wink MMA Academy, in hopes of revitalizing his career. Should he defeat ‘The Leech’ next month, a rematch with Rafael dos Anjos makes a lot of sense.

Clay Guida is also booked up. ‘The Carpenter’ is set to take on Scott Holtzman at the end of the year, with news of the fight only dropping recently. There is still plenty of time until this fight takes place, and should Holtzman drop out, RDA could easily step in to face the 37-22 UFC veteran.

Jorge Masvidal is not currently booked, but he does still have some issues preventing him from entering the UFC octagon. ‘Gamebred’ is currently dealing with a court case brought on by an alleged assault on bitter rival Colby Covington. The incident reportedly took place shortly after their main event clash at UFC 272. Masvidal has stated that he may be looking at a return to the UFC in early 2023.

Jim Miller is the only fighter who appears to be in the perfect position to take a fight with RDA. ‘A-10’ is riding a three-fight winning streak, having defeated Erick Gonzalez, Nikolas Motta and Donald Cerrone. Jim Miller vs. Rafael dos Anjos is a fight that would make plenty of sense and could easily take a featured prelim spot on a major PPV card.

Who would you like to see Rafael dos Anjos fight next?
