Diego BrandaoWhile the 14th season of The Ultimate Fighter airs on Spike TV, we’ll be checking in regularly with Diego Brandao, who earned his spot in the house this season with a first-round knockout victory over Jesse Newell that was shown on Wednesday night’s season premiere.

Brandao was born and raised in Brazil, began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at age 14 and became a mixed martial arts fighter shortly after that. He currently lives in Albuquerque, N.M. and trains with Team Jackson/Winkeljohn.

We talked this week about Brandao’s knockout of Newell, his thoughts about moving into the Ultimate Fighter house and his career goals. The interview is below.

Michael David Smith: You knocked Jesse Newell out very quickly in the first round. He seemed to be out when you knocked him down with the left hand but you landed one more on the ground. What were you thinking as that happened — was the final punch necessary?
Diego Brandao: I was just thinking that this is my opportunity. I wanted to prove to the world that I’m the best. I wanted to prove it to everybody. This is my time. No one is going to take this from me. I go for knockouts — punch him in the face and knock him out.

What has training with Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn been like for you?
They’ve been very good for me. Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn cornering me in my fights is great, and I feel confident training with them — they train the best fighters in the world. They helped me get on The Ultimate Fighter, and they will continue to help me in the future.

What’s your background? Where did you grow up and what inspired you to become a fighter?
I grew up in Brazil, I’ve trained with great guys there. Wanderlei Silva is the guy who inspired me the most. He’s my hero. I try to fight like Wanderlei Silva. I want people to see me fight and to think I look like Wanderlei Silva in Pride. I also wanted to do it for my family — I’ve been training three years without seeing my family.

What does your nickname, Ceara mean?
I was born in a city called Ceara and later moved to Manaus, Amazonas. In Brazil my name is Diego Ceara — people call me that because I come from there.

Were there any problems living in the house with all the other fighters?
I had problems with some of the guys who were watching too much TV. A lot of the times I just wanted the guys to stay away from me, but it was cool. Six weeks living in that house is easy for me after I’ve been away from my family for three years. I’m willing to do all this to reach my dream.

What do you want fans to know about you?
I’m a very humble guy. My mom and my dad taught me that. I’m a fun guy, too. I like to play, I like to make friends, but I was in this to fight. This is my time, and this is my chance to become a champion in the UFC.

(Editor’s note: Check back every week for Brandao’s thoughts on the latest episode of The Ultimate Fighter.)

Video Reminder: TUF 14 Debuts Tonight With a Two-Hour Episode Featuring 16 Fights

(Video courtesy of YouTube/UFC)

Just a friendly reminder that the final Spike TV-affiliated season of The Ultimate Fighter — TUF 14 kicks off tonight at 9:00 pm ET. Judging by the clip above, Jason Miller’s role on the show is to bug the shit out of perma-heel Michael Bisping and he’s doing a bang-up job of it.

He definitely seems to be getting under the skin of “The Count,” which explains why the cocky Brit has made no secret of the fact that he despises “Mayhem”  in any of the interviews he’s done about his coaching gig on the show. At least they’ll get the opportunity to hug it out in December.

This season features bantamweights and featherweights and tonight’s episode will have all 16 qualifier bouts between the final 32 selected to fight for the remaining 16 beds in the TUF house.

Sprinkle in equal parts alcohol, idiocy and testosterone and a ferocious feud between coaches as volatile as the one between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz, and it looks like the series will be leaving Spike with a bang before it packs up and heads over to Fox next year for its “new and improved” live incarnation.

I may actually watch this season if it’s half as exciting as the preview makes it look. The marketing department earned its pay this time around. I’m just glad they fired the script writer who came up with the spoogy sushi.

‘TUF 14? Trash-Talk Alert: ‘Gay Chiropractor’ Is the New ‘Male Nurse’

(Props: KnuckleGame via Fightlinker)

Ultimate Fighter 14 coaches Michael Bisping and Jason Miller took shots at each other for over 30 minutes at a media call held yesterday to pump up the show. Here’s how the conversation ended (skip to the 35:28 mark to hear it):

Miller: [Bisping’s] coaching staff are a lot of guys that I trained with back in the day and [I] moved on because they weren’t up to par for what I needed. So that just goes to show you Mike’s level of coaching staff.

Bisping: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’d just like to elaborate that Jason brought a chiropractor as one of his staff. He refers to himself as a doctor, but we all know a chiropractor isn’t a doctor, and certainly isn’t an MMA coach. But good for crackin’ your back.

Miller: My chiropractor actually helped train a few world champions, maybe you’ve heard, Randy Couture and this guy Dan Henderson. So he’s not just a chiropractor. We’re talking about Ryan Parsons, of course.

Bisping: He’s a chiropractor. He’s a gay chiropractor. [unintelligible] He’s most likely been taking it up…

Miller: I don’t think he’s gay, Mike. I mean, at least he’s bi because he has two kids.

Like any dumbass teenager, Michael Bisping just loves to throw the gay-bomb — and related insults — at folks he doesn’t care for. He called Chael Sonnen gay for referring to his fight against Brian Stann in comic-book terms, explained that he didn’t want to look like a faggot when he got some Vaseline in his eye at UFC 114, then called Jorge Rivera a faggot at the UFC 127 weigh-ins for the trifecta. Now, Ryan Parsons is gay, according to homosexuality-expert Michael Bisping.

If this is a reflection of Bisping’s maturity level, he probably didn’t do as well in his on-set verbal exchanges with Miller as he thought he did, and it’s a safe bet that you’ll be rooting against him (again!) by the end of the season. Seriously, I’m beginning to think that this is one of those “the lady doth protest too much” situations…

The last season of The Ultimate Fighter to air on Spike begins next Wednesday. At least it is likely to leave with a bang. What other way could a show starring Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Michael Bisping leave?

The two are among the most heavily quoted MMA fighters over the last half-decade, Miller for his biting one-liners and Bisping for his blunt honesty. Both reared their heads on Wednesday, when they shared a teleconference to publicize TUF’s Sept. 21 premiere.

Between praise for the season’s cast and discussion about their upcoming fight, Miller and Bisping couldn’t resist engaging in some verbal sparring.

Their most memorable exchange surprisingly came after a rare compliment. Miller had just finished crediting the UFC for the decision to install them on as rival coaches, saying it was bound to make for a memorable season and lead to personality clashes.

As if on cue, Bisping seized the moment.

“You’re trying to sweeten me up so I don’t beat you too badly on Dec. 3,” he said.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re way worse an idiot than I am,” Miller said. “And I’m going to smash your face and choke you.”

“Nice to see you’ve been warming up on your sister,” Bisping shot back. “I definitely will be practicing guillotine escapes.”

“You make sure to practice them,” Miller said with a laugh. “Actually, I’ll send you her number.”

That Bisping would bring up a now-infamous August incident involving Miller and his sister would not otherwise be surprising, but the timing of it in this particular case was a bit curious.

Literally less than two minutes earlier, Bisping had been comparing his feelings of Miller to those of Jorge Rivera, saying the latter situation was worse because Rivera had “crossed the line talking about family stuff.”

“Jason is not like that, he’s just a bit idiotic,” Miller said.

Bisping said that the two had hung around each other on a few occasions in the past and that he “thought he was an OK guy,” but that his view completely changed within a short time of arriving in Las Vegas. Bisping said Miller “crossed the line” during the season but wouldn’t offer any details. Miller said the feeling was mutual.

“My initial belief was to give Mike the benefit of doubt, but he fully proved himself to be a p—- by week 2,” he said.

Still, the fighters begrudgingly admitted that they shared some common ground when it came to the opportunity placed in front of them. While Bisping said it frustrated him to be taken out of action for an extended period to tape the series, he acknowledged it is something of a reward to be chosen for the coaching roles.

Miller, though well known due to his Bully Beatdown show, isn’t quite as well known for his fighting exploits, even though he’s been around for a decade and competed in several major promotions. For that, Bisping needled Miller.

“It’s a big opportunity for Jason,” he said. “He went from fighting on the undercard to fighting in the main event against me.”

Miller said he was grateful for the opportunity but added, “I cannot do anything other than beat Mike up, so I apologize.”

After thanking Bisping again, the Brit responded, “That’s quite alright, I’ll be sending you on your way back to the undercards real soon.”

And so it went.

The two will have at least three months to let their distaste for each other simmer into a boil. But at least to Bisping, the fight has already been decided.

“Between you, me and everyone else on the line, Jason’s already admitted that I’m pretty much going to beat him. He said I had better standup, he said I have better cardio. He knows I’m bigger and stronger. These are things he’s already admitted to me, so he’s already beaten mentally. Dec. 3 is just a formality of showing up and collecting my paycheck.”

Michael Bisping Reminds Us Chael Sonnen is a Cheater Who Took Steroids

TUF 14 coach, Michael Bisping appeared on Ariel Helwani‘s The MMA Hour and may have said something relevant about Chael Sonnen, who claims he will regain a Middleweight title-shot should he defeat Brian Stann at UFC 136 this October 8th. In regard to that next-in-line shot, Bisping told Helwani, “I think it’s complete bulls**t. Chael Sonnen, who just fought the champ, cheated and took steroids.” Bisping went on to say, “I think I am next in line. Ideal scenario would be beat Miller, get a title shot, win the world title.”

Now Bisping also has clear perspective understanding that, a win over Jason Miller isn’t exactly title-shot worthy. Meanwhile, Anderson Silva has a shoulder injury, which is expected to leave him out of the Octagon until sometime in 2012. Perhaps the UFC gods will plan to pit the winner of Sonnen vs. Stann against the Bisping vs. Miller winner and determine the next contender from there. Michael Bisping will face Jason “Mayhem” Miller this December 3rd after TUF 14 airs this fall.

The outspoken Sonnen has yet to tweet a response but expect something borderline logical and debatably amusing to come: here.
