Tyron Woodley’s Coach Has Theory Why He’s Not Fan Favorite

Tyron Woodley’s coach has a theory in regards to the reason that the UFC welterweight champion is not a fan favorite when he competes. It really started all when he won the title after beating Robbie Lawler by KO.

Woodley suffered a partial labrum tear early in his title defense over top contender Demian Maia, which he won by decision, which put him on the shelf. Woodley had been a fighting champion as he has defended it twice in 2017 where he picked up decisions over Stephen Thompson and Maia. This tied with three other fighters for the most active 2017 schedule by a UFC champion.

Then, for the majority of this year, Woodley would continuously state in interviews that he wanted big fights while telling fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos, Colby Covington, and Kamaru Usman to wait a little longer.

He would then return with a submission win over Darren Till in the headliner of UFC 228 to retain his welterweight title.

One of the coaches of the welterweight champion, Din Thomas, recently stated in an interview his theory on why Woodley is not over big with the UFC fanbase.

“I think that people are starting to realize,” Thomas said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Here’s what I think, I’m going to be honest with you, I think that people were just upset with Tyron. I don’t think that they ever didn’t think he could fight. I think they were just upset with him because they know what he’s capable of. I mean, up until the second Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson fight — Tyron was just tearing people up until that fight. Then those two fights, I think he just disappointed people and they were upset with him, and that’s when they started really badmouthing him. And the fact that he was coming out and just kinda complaining about his position in the game, I think that really just kinda exacerbated everybody’s view of him, and just, ‘You know what, we don’t like this guy.’

“But I think his performance on Saturday and his stance now that, ‘Listen, I don’t care who you put in front of me, I’m just going to fight,’ I think that’s what people want from Tyron and I think that’s what turned everybody’s opinion of him around.”

“It’s always affected him,” Thomas said. “There’s times where we had to take his phone away from him. It affects these guys. These fighters, everybody thinks they’re just these warriors and these animals, but fighters are some of the most sensitive people that you’ll ever see or ever meet, and it affects them. They get out there and they train their tails off and then get in the cage and they fight, they make themselves so vulnerable for the world to see, and then people just take that for granted and start talking trash about them, and it affects them. It affects them heavily.

“But I think now is a time where Tyron has matured, he has evolved as a person and a martial artist. He’s starting to become more mature and say, ‘You know what, this may be a time where I have to just give to the fans what they want, and that’s for me to just shut up and fight.’”

Woodley is expected to make his next title defense against Colby Covington at an event that has yet to be officially announced.

Former title challenger Nick Diaz wasn’t impressed with Tyron Woodley’s dismantling of rising prospect Darren Till last weekend (Sept 8, 2018) at UFC 228 in Dallas, Texas.

Stockton’s Diaz has weighed in on the main event of UFC 228 and in his opinion, the UFC needs to stop giving Woodley ‘easy’ fights. Woodley did end up taking care of business rather effortlessly against Till, however, at this level, there is no ‘easy’ fight.

Diaz has indicated his plans to return to action in 2019. He was recently cleared of a domestic violence charge and is nearly done serving his questionable suspension for ********* use. Diaz hasn’t competed in the octagon since a 2015 middleweight loss to Anderson Silva. He hasn’t won a fight since 2011.

Watch Nick Diaz weigh in on Tyron Woodley’s easy fights here:

“I missed the whole fight… I’ve never had an easy fight in my life. Fight that kid… I wouldn’t take one. It’s like… stop making bullshit fights with this guy!”

Video: Tyron Woodley Believes He Is The Greatest Welterweight Champion in UFC History

Tyron Woodley believes he is the welterweight GOAT.

The post Video: Tyron Woodley Believes He Is The Greatest Welterweight Champion in UFC History appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Ever since winning the welterweight title Tyron Woodley has said he wants to be remembered as the greatest of all time in his division. The “Chosen One” took one step closer to greatness at UFC 228 as he submitted Darren Till to defend his title.

The welterweight GOAT debate cant take place without Georges St. Pierre. However, GSP has openly stated that at this point in his career he is only interested in “legacy fights”. Woodley has largely downplayed the idea of a fight with St.Pierre due to these comments. Regardless, the “Chosen One” believes he has already done enough to be considered the best in the world.

“I am the greatest welterweight champion of all time,” Woodley told TMZ Sports following his win on Saturday night. “No disrespect to Georges St-Pierre but I don’t have to fight him to prove that. I’m fighting right now when the sport is at its peak, when the sport is at its hottest. When the athletes are the most supreme, whether it’s genetically using PED’s [performance enhancing drugs] or it’s just because they’ve watched it for the last 25 years and they started wrestling and grappling and striking at the same time. In that era it was the striker, the grappler, and [Georges St-Pierre] made it to the era where wrestlers like Johny Hendricks and Josh Koscheck started to be able to throw punches.”

“Now you’ve got a guy like me, who just got his black belt in jiu-jitsu, All-American wrestler and I’ve out struck all the best strikers in the entire UFC and I train with one of the best boxing coaches in the game, Eric Brown from Wild Card. You would almost say I’m a black belt in three different arts. I’m that type of fighter and then I’m like a Mack truck, then I’m very cerebral and I have a good fight IQ.”

Woodley is well on his way to welterweight royalty but he is still a few title defenses shy of St-Pierre’s record nine. Regardless, the “Chosen One” thinks his resume should speak for itself.

Maybe if Woodley can match GSP’s record nine welterweight title defenses a “legacy fight” would seem more appealing to the Canadian. Time will tell.

Tyron Woodley made a huge statement by submitting touted rising star Darren Till (full highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The impressive win came amongst “USA! USA!” chants from the Texas crowd as he fought off the Liverpool-born Till. It would seem the victory would have earned hated champion Woodley some more fans, and indeed it may have. But it seemingly hasn’t earned him any more respect from UFC President Dana White, with whom he has a well-documented history of beef.

So his relationship with his employers may still be rocky, so much so that Ariel Helwani asked how he could he mend the fence with his employers. Woodley responded he could only keep winning.

“Just keep winning. That’s all I gotta do is keep winning.”

Woodley’s case is somewhat similar to that of all-time great former UFC champion Anderson Silva, who had several fights where he clowned around and drew the ire of White. But after several highlight-reel stoppages in a row, he finally earned the adulation of the fans and the respect of White.

So Woodley told Helwani he had not even spoken to White after his UFC 228 win. All he could he do, he said, was keep winning:

Ariel: What did he (Dana) say to you afterwards?

Woodley: I didn’t speak to him. I just won. That’s what champions do. They win, right?

Indeed that’s what champions do. It worked for ‘The Spider,’ at least eventually, as he became one of the biggest stars MMA has ever seen by knocking out a long list of well-known fighters. Woodley appears to be planning on doing the same, and after he ended his streak of extremely boring title fights by submitting Till, he could be on his way to just that.

Whether or not the fans, and perhaps more importantly for him, White, cooperates remains to be seen.

Fighters who run afoul of the polarizing UFC exec tend to stay there, yet as Silva can attest, all is not lost. What’s next for the UFC longest-reigning and most underappreciated champion?
